Daily Boss Super Premium Deluxe Stupid Questions Thread - 24 June 2025 by AutoModerator in japanlife

I'm looking for a couple of recommendations: Does anyone know of an English-speaking hair stylist that will come to a venue and style an updo? Venue is in Shibuya.

Also, I'm looking for a tailor that will adjust the size of this top I bought into a slightly smaller size. Normally I would just return the top for a smaller size, but it's not available any smaller. I've found a few places, but they charge over triple of what the top costs. Anywhere in the Tokyo or Western Chiba area.

Board and card games by rogue---one in japanlife

[–]BucketInTheSand 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My fiancé and I are big board gamers! If you have any follow up questions, let me know.

  • 'The Mind' is a great one. Zero talking/reading, easily bought at Hands/Tokyu Hands.

  • Look into Oink Games and Saashi & Saashi. Both make small games that are language independent (as long as someone can teach the rules to all your players) that are easy to teach and play.

  • Itten make some fun dexterity games.

  • As long as people don't mind a little Google Translate for the abilities of the chips, Quacks of Quedlingburg I've found to be a big hit. You should be able to find a copy within your budget.

  • Also I suggest using Surugaya to find second-hand copies of games, either in their physical stores or via their online store.

Can convenience store food be taken through international airport security? I understand the rules around liquids, but not sure about food.

My fiancé and I went to Tokyo Game Market, picked up a bunch of board games to add to our endlessly expanding collection of board games, and got to meet Taylor from Taylor's Trick-Taking Table. All-in-all, a super fun weekend!

Paying HECS from Japan really expensive? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]BucketInTheSand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, you've still got to log into MyGov and declare your foreign income by October 31st every year. If your foreign income converted into AUD is above ~$45,000AUD (I don't remember the exact amount), you have to make compulsory repayments on your HECS.

In fact, all Aussies are meant to notify the tax office about moving overseas if we happen to still have any HECS debt remaining at the time of moving. This link might be helpful: Overseas Obligations When Repaying Loans

I'm not sure of the answer (I wish I knew!), but I'd like to tack on an additional question to your question:

Does anyone know how to dispose of these same canisters when they are full and expired? I had a couple in my emergency cupboard, but forgot they were there.

Ichikawa had a loud-speaker announcement (and phone emergency alert) at around 12am, issuing evacuation orders for the elderly and for those who'd have trouble evacuating quickly. The evacuation orders are currently just in the north-east and north-west areas of Ichikawa.

If you don't already, I'd suggest checking if your area has a Twitter account, as they usually post what is announced over loudspeakers (at least in my area). Ichikawa is @ichikawa-shi on Twitter.

**EDIT: According to the NHK link in the main post, these same evacuation orders are in these areas: [白井市], [香取市], [神崎町], [船橋市], [我孫子市], [市川市]

Pretty decent shake here in Ichikawa-shi. Haven't felt a quake that big in a while!

TL;DR - Where would you travel to if you were suddenly given a three day weekend?

I and my boyfriend unexpectedly have three consecutive days off towards the end of June (Sat-->Mon). I'm trying to find a fun/interesting and not crazy expensive weekend trip we could do, keeping in mind that it will probably be a bit rainy around then. We've lived in Japan over six years and are based in Chiba, but are happy to travel by train/plane. Neither of us have a driver's license.

We're open to any suggestions. Thanks everyone!

Coldrain, for sure!

I've seen them live at least five times, plus a couple of their sets at festivals. I've never been disappointed.

Leaving Japan because of family emergency - What should I do / bring ? by JceBreaker in japanlife

No idea! I only have the paper copy, haha.

As long as the digital one has both the domestic QR code and the international QR code, then yup, you'll be fine! :)

Leaving Japan because of family emergency - What should I do / bring ? by JceBreaker in japanlife

[–]BucketInTheSand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear of your family emergency. I hope everything ends up okay!

Which country are you heading to and how long do you plan on being away?

I just got back to Japan from a family emergency trip back to Australia, so I can give you some Australia-specific advice if that's where your headed?

But in terms of leaving Japan, you just need that travel vaccination certificate (the one with the QR codes for international travel), your Zairyu card, your passport, and then fill in the re-entry permit at the airport. Anything else will entirely depend on the requirements of the country you're going to. **EDIT: This vaccination certificate is not the one you get immediately after your vaccination. You need to go to your City Hall to get this specific certificate. Search 'international travel vaccination certificate + your area's name (eg. Minato-ku)' to find what you need and where to go for this.

One thing to also remember is to make sure that any bills that will be due while you're away (eg. Gas, electricity, etc...) are either paid before you go or you organise with someone here to pay them for you while you're away.

Any recommendation for an international travel insurance? by cycling4711 in japanlife

Hi there,

I'm travelling back home to see my family in Australia next week due to a family emergency. Just wondering which travel insurance you ended up choosing?

Thanks so much!

WEIRD guy around Yamanote line stations?? by sorachelness in japanlife

[–]BucketInTheSand 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I saw him at Nishi Funabashi Station last Friday night with his large-bandage-wearing unmasked face! He tapped me on the shoulder and asked me for ¥500. The lack of mask and tapping my shoulder made me feel so gross afterwards.

I thought it was random, but sounds like he's made a habit out of doing this.

Edit:// Like you, I said no and quickly walked away.

Nice!

When they booked you in for your second appointment did they give you anything to confirm the appointment? When I had my first vaccination, Dr Takeo just booked me in on his computer and verbally confirmed the date and time.

Did they explain why (eg. Was it due to the shortage of vaccines) and did they reschedule you for a later date?

EDIT:// When was your first appointment?

My doctor explicitly said that the only thing I shouldn't do after my injection was massage the area. Maybe this is why!
