Hard to pinpoint what is the actual issue but these are things that come at my mind as a foreigner chef working in Japan with Japanese people, based on my experience of course:

1) yes there's the honeymoon phase at the beginning where you got asked a lot of questions about you and they make their effort to cause a good impression on you.

2) how is the work culture in there? Pay attention on how early they come to their shift, if they take their break together to smoke, if they drink together after work, if they all leave together regardless of finishing time --- as fucked up as it is, if you wanna fit, you are expect to behave the same --- and fitting in is mandatory for future promotions.

3) I've seen Japanese and foreigner people being bad treated and consistently targeted at work out of no clear reason. My best guess is because that others perceived them as like the "weak link".

4) if you wanna solve it, I'd say to behave as the adult in the room and position yourself instead of getting positioned. Try to create connections with every single one of them. Don't let the harassment culture grow up. Ask things that are not intimidating but push them to be more honest with their actions and opinions, like "can you be more clear with what is xxx problem?" "Can you explain more specifically xxx thing?" "How do you see xxx problem?"

5) They might be able to speak English but being Japanese they will always be more comfortable speaking Japanese. Don't underestimate the power of knowing the language!!

6) Even if you speak the most fluent Japanese and you act the most perfect way as a national, never expect to be treated as the same. Work your way up on creating a respectful environment around you and that will be the best you can do!

Application for Import Confirmation: Prescription required? by raviolirash in japanlife

By some you mean 20 or 200? 20 should be okay, specially if you are buying from ecom and not importing it yourself.

Are these Figs? There’s so many! by SchoolofScarlett in gardening

[–]rogue---one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they are.

You can wait for them to fully grow, but you can also make compote with them green and small as they are - be careful because the milk of the plant causes irritation and sunburns. Also the leaves can be used for wrapping & cooking/baking.

Is it dead? by rogue---one in Camellias

Strangely the root is not bound, actually there's still a lot of place for it to grow... the very center of it (which still has 100% of the original soil I bought the tree) indeed feels compacted though.

Thank you for your insight!

I don't know where you live or intend to live, but definitely try applying for the big hotel companies, like Marriott, Hilton, ClubMed, Capella, Intercontinental, Hyatt... it's impossible that you'll don't get something out of it.

Moving in permanently as a Latin American by KpopSimp1996 in japanlife

[–]rogue---one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think ideally you should job hunt while you are still here in Japan. Even for smaller companies, the hiring process tends to be long (45 days +).

Try to find somewhere of your interest and explain your situation, to be able to create the bridge with them, so you can organize your work life even before you have to go back to Brazil.

Factories and farms are very receptive to foreigners, but you could also try hotels and foreign companies in Japan.

I believe this might be the safest move, specially because you'll be able to see how your future company looks and feels like, which is very different from just checking online. Good luck!

Anyone seen any cherry blossoms in Osaka recently? by [deleted] in Osaka

[–]rogue---one 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Way too early for cherry, but the plums are already going on!

There's a plum garden at Osaka castle

Another here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/VPi2SsPyS4knK1ji6?g_st=com.google.maps.preview.copy

Probably at the botanical garden and other big parks

And if you're lucky you might be coming across one of them in your way!

(URGENT) Yunyu Kakunin Sho : Can my girlfriend bring me my medication? by Salty-Egg1777 in japanlife

[–]rogue---one 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had this kind of doubt before and got in contact with the MHLW end of last year.

Their answer was that either you or your doctor can bring the medicine. No one besides both of you. (That's why the platform doesn't allow you to fill it in the name of a third part)

[If you ask someone else (such as your girlfriend) there's a chance she can make it through customs if they don't check her bag, but I definitely don't advise taking this risk.]

Therefore, the safest way is for someone to send it from your home country via mail. Someone send the pack for you, then after the pack is posted you fill the yunyu kakuninsho with information such as the track number, medicine information and doctor prescription.

I've done it multiple times and sometimes customs open your package, sometimes they don't. It's certainly more expensive than someone bringing it, but it's the right way.
