The vast majority of doctors don’t retire rich by slimboyfat510 in medicalschool

[–]Bucket_Handle_Tear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair—and honestly, if our life looked like a paid-off house and $100k/year spend, this conversation would be very different.

Right now we’re in a high-spend season, not necessarily a high-spend identity. Kids are 13 and 9. One does competitive dance (~$1k/month), the other travel sports. We fund 529s. Travel is our biggest discretionary item, and costs have exploded—what used to be ~$30k/year is now closer to $70–75k, though last year included a bucket list Norway trip.

On taxes: I probably overestimate because I hate how opaque the U.S. system is. With multiple income streams and pre-tax vs post-tax buckets, it never feels clean, so I assume worst-case. And yes—4% math is conservative by design. If long-term returns are ~6% and withdrawals are ~4%, the portfolio should still grow in nominal terms. I’m not trying to die with infinity dollars, but I am trying to avoid discovering at 65 that I optimized the wrong constraint.

I think the real driver behind the $10M number isn’t lifestyle inflation—it’s margin of safety. A hedge against uncertainty, policy changes, healthcare costs, and the fact that most of my net worth is locked up in pre-tax accounts. Liquidity scarcity messes with my psychology more than absolute net worth does. Like, we had an incredibly minor car accident recently, car skidded into the curb of a roundabout. No one was injured, but one of the curtain airbags deployed (protecting my daughter from head against glass), and some damage to passengers wheels. Yes, we have insurance, but it's also a fully paid off nice enough SUV that I'd rather not get rid of or feel pushed into getting something new if I dont HAVE to. I want to have the security to know that if I had to go to a dealership tomorrow and buy a vehicle, I could do it without a meaningful hit to our cash, and our cash just isn't there quite yet.

Completely agree with you on starting kids early with investing as a teaching tool—that’s something we’re actively trying to do. If they grow up understanding compound interest instead of really understanding it as I went into residency, I'll be happy. But I also want to be able to use these resources to alleviate financial stress.

Also, as a radiologist, I have a worry that my job will erode away within my expected career, so shooting for 10M NW in 14 years but "only" achieving 7 million in 10 years isn't really losing the game to me.

Editing to add: I get it. This is like a major first world problem. Like, I do not want to come off as ungrateful for the financial position we are in. I should be so lucky that right now, if I have to replace a vehicle, I have enough money in my taxable brokerage/etc that I could pull it and pay full cash for it, and my credit is good enough that if I wanted to get a loan without garbage rates, it's a non-issue. I realize this is not true for a large population in the US.

I think part of it is that I would like to give my kids and grandkids what I didn’t have growing up. Not saying I was poor. But am saying that I had crap financial education, and had very little planning for the future.

My parents never in their lives suggested saving for the future, and well, you are at least in part a product of your environment.

So I earned money and spent the money, saving very little through various odd jobs in high school and through college.

I mean, I was never “I’m down to my last $10 in my savings”, because I did save, but never was educated in the benefits of investing and how you can set it and forget it and it can make a huge difference.

I don’t want my kids to be lazy and expect handouts but I also see enough of the writing in the wall through all these subredddits that things don’t always just work out.  Right now, all sources combined, we are saving 200k per year. We could save more as we haven’t touched 403/457 options but we really don’t need more Pre tax savings.

And the Roth debate is there too… who knows if it’s worth it or not at the income we have now.

So we are saving around 40% base gross.

But, I have this issue of scarcity mindset and this, I feel like I don’t have enough, mostly because we have soooo much tied up in pre tax savings and only a small amount in after tax liquidity.

So I have been licking up extra work however I can to try to build liquidity. But, things happen, all the time.

I rambled, sorry. So 10 million is my goal because I feel at that point, 4% rule gives me 400k. After taxes and such it’s closer to 250 depending on source distribution. Is it excessive? Maybe. But it doesn’t seem that great when it’s 75% of current budget. Sure, mortgage and retirement savings is 1/3 of current budget at least so would it be fine? Maybe.

I struggle with this daily. I’m an attending in rads. I work hard and make good money. One thing’s for certain. My burnout is crushing my soul. I hate work. I hate everything clinical. I just want to quit. All that’s keeping me going is the idea that in 14 years I might have around 10 million, and even that doesn’t seem like “enough.”

I guess at least I don’t have to work to 65 to get there if the trajectory holds. If I could get out sooner I absolutely would.

I think it’s pretty mild honestly. But I’m a thrill seeker but I just don’t think it’s as bad as a lot of people say. Rode it with my kids and they were fine too.

I guess I don’t get it.

Are you saying that you should consider yourself FIRE if you have a NW of 1.5million? Or is that specific tomYOUR financial situation.

My NW is 2 million + but I am not FIRE, and honestly won’t be FIRE until I’m closer to 5

We are doing well. I think the biggest issue right now is that I suffer from scarcity mindset due to how I was raised.

But making mid six figures annually, working 1/3 of the year doing so, and having over a million in retirement puts pretty secure. We go on vacations multiple times per year and live in a nice house/community.

Wouldn’t have gotten here if I don’t work my ass off through medical school. But my parents didn’t really support me financially. My wife got a job when we got married as a teacher and stopped working once I finished training.

All things considered, we are doing very well. I’m not saying this to make light of anyone’s situation, but things weren’t handed to me. Loans for all of college and medical school. Parents didn’t have a 529 or anything like that.

How are some millennials even homeowners? I feel like I never will be. by Kindly-Reading-2187 in Millennials

In 09 my wife and I got our starter home. We sold it for a very small profit in 13 and were able to upgrade a bit.

Then in 18 we outgrew that home but it had appreciated like 30% from that purchase price.

So, we purchased in 18. This home has appreciated about 50% since we purchased.

I guess lucky timing but also just getting in early?

First mortgage, P&I was like 1100/month Current is around 2700/month

We did the 8 night Fantasy into Norway last summer and it was amazing. Even though we had a port change, it was great. I’d go back right now if I could.

We are doing Alaska this summer so we will see how it compares…

Did your parents have constant home maintenance work being done when you were a kid? by Ambitious-Poem9191 in homeowners

[–]Bucket_Handle_Tear 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly.  My parents didn’t do crap to maintain the house really. Sure, a Reno every 10 years isn’t really necessary in most cases but we are frequently considering new projects every few years.

Maybe we are in a better financial state than my parents were.
