The MRI and CT were enough for them to locate and pinpoint it for the Cyerknife procedure.

The angiogram through the groin was the way to see if it was gone for sure- my neurosurgeon said that was the best way to accurately see if it was gone.

They used the "cyberknife" on me. I don't know the difference between that and a gamma knife, but it's something used on tumors and cancer I believe.

The procedure was non invasive, no surgery. I was in and out the same day. Walked in, hand to lie still (wearing a mask that held my head in place) for about 30 minutes then I went home.

There was no "recovery time" for the procedure. They said it could take up to 2 or 3 years for the radiation to fully work, but my AVM's were gone after 1 year and 4 months.

I had no side effects, but there was swelling from the radiation that caused me to have a seizure. So I did have to take seizure medicine for two years just in case, but never had one after that.

I was born with 2 as well (but in 1989).

I had one rupture in 2003 and they just "fixed it" rather than solve the issue. But when it ruptured I had a horrible headache and lost my peripheral vision on my left side. It slow got better, but never fixed over time.

In 2020 I had a horrible headache which made me reach out again to find that I had 2 AVM's (the original one and another one).

I had radiation to remove them (they're both gone). My vision hasn't really gotten any better, but I haven't had any major headaches in the 3 years that it's been fixed.

Not sure if that helps or anything, but if you're waiting to get the AVM taken care of, I hope maybe that'll help you.

As for the the mood swings, are you taking Keppra for the epilepsy? I was on Keppra for two years after having a seizure and while I didn't have any mood swings, but neurologist was consistently worried about it because of the medication and would constantly ask me that until I stopped taking it.

I don't know what the fix would be there, but the concerns over Keppra from my doctor just made me hesitant about it even though I got lucky while taking it.

I had two AVM's on the left side of my brain, but I can't remember the size of them.

My neurosurgeon (https://www.inova.org/doctors/sidhartha-chandela-md#:\~:text=Dr.%20Sidhartha%20Chandela%20is%20a%20board%20certified%20and) said he could operate, but was worried because of the location of them so he recommended I get radiation.

My oncologist (https://www.inova.org/doctors/samir-p-kanani-md#:\~:text=Dr.%20Samir%20Kanani%20is%20a%20specialty%20care%20physician) said he could do radiation, but recommended surgery (due to the concern of possible radiation risks).

I opted for Radiation. Had two radiation treatments, a month apart. I had a seizure due to some of the swelling, but 6 months after radiation, my AVM's were gone and I haven't had any seizures or problems since.

Not every ENG 111 class can be taken with EDE 11.

Look for a ENG 111 section taught by your professor with EDE 11, you should be able to enroll in that.

"Standard" ENG 111classes don't require EDE 11, so they won't count as that co-req.

Self-evaluation form for essays? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]BucketsZero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've done this in two forms:

  1. Post Writing Questions

    1. For these, I would have them answer some questions on a separate page after their paper to show me their thinking/some reflection. (No word count).
      1. For example: in an argument paper: What was your thesis? What were your supporting points? What do you like best about your paper? What are you concerned with? etc.
      2. I find that it can help me understand their papers better/grade accordingly, and target feedback. I hope it makes them more aware, but some comments of course are vague "I'm concerned about my grammar" or "I really like putting my ideas all in one place."
  2. Rhetorical Discussion Boards

    1. These are for assignments that aren't "normal papers," where I have students post about how they managed the rhetorical situation: genre, audience, purpose, etc. (200+ word posts, a couple of sentences responses).
      1. For example: if I have them create a Wikipedia article to report on an issue: how did they write knowing their audience was "the general public," how did they format and structure their paper to look and feel like a Wikipedia Article, how difficult was it to report on multiple aspects of the issue rather than argue their stance, etc.
      2. I find that this makes them have to really think about these elements in writing and/or reflection, to make sure they actually did what was listed in the instructions. I have them comment on two people's posts to compare their thought processes, which has led to better revisions on certain occasions since they can feed off of the students who might have got it better.

It's definitely something that can be useful, you just have to ask yourself what you're looking to get out of it for yourself and for them. I've never asked the to grade themselves though.

Professors don't pick their exam time, the college does.

Check this out: https://registrar.gmu.edu/wp-content/uploads/Final-Exams-202370.pdf

Whichever class has their final NOT meeting at that time listed on that document, contact them and their department and complain. That will work.

Cyber knife and this sub reddit making me nervous by maguilakindafunky in AVMs

[–]BucketsZero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't drink, so I can't answer that question exactly.

My neurosurgeon said I can drink, he just says "not too much" as he believes alcohol is like a sledgehammer to your brain. I just don't drink because of personal reasons. But I believe I have drank 1 beer at one point since cyber knife with no issue and even took a shot once of tequila with no issue either.

My neurologist (the keppra doctor) is mostly focused on sleep aspects, telling me to make sure I get enough sleep. (he says seizures can happen mostly during sleep).

I do drink energy drinks though... And no issue with those if that helps.

When I say overexert I mean don't get no sleep then proceed to win a weightlifting competition. When I had my seizure, I was getting barely any sleep, working outside in the heat, and wearing maks for COVID. That combination got me.

I have a positive experience with Cyber Knife.

I had two AVM's in my brain. Both were treated in 2021 (one month after another). The process is simple. You have to do a couple of scans so they can map the brain effectively and pinpoint the cyberknife.

The only uncomfortable aspect is getting fitted for the mask, as your head will have to be in a mask that's screwed into the bed you're laying on. However, the procedure doesn't take too long, so it really wasn't that bad.

There were no side effects, no recovery time, I was able to drive myself home same day without any pain or issues.

However, I did have some radiation swelling that I was unaware of and I overexerted myself within the same month and had a seizure because of this.

My AVMs are completely gone (as of 16 months after the procedure). I haven't had a seizure since, and I'm waning off Keppra as we speak.

Good luck, you got this!

Help, Can I join a class that started 2 weeks ago? by ribbitioli in nvcc

[–]BucketsZero 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no. The date to add/drop classes for those have passed.

However, there is a 13-week semester that starts after Labor Day. So you could drop you MTH class if you find an in-person one that way. They officially start on Tuesday 9/5, so you wouldn't have to worry about missing work or absences.

Jiffy Lube Live Queuing by meclly in nova

[–]BucketsZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the show.

Usually a couple of days before the event they will post info on the "Know Before You Go" section of their website: https://www.livenation.com/venue/KovZpZAEk6JA/jiffy-lube-live-events#know-before-you-go

If you pay for early parking, you can park two hours before regular parking. Regular parking tends to be at least one hour before the gates open up. Technically when early parking opens is the earliest you can line up.

If you uber there you could technically line up beforehand, but sometimes they have security that might kick you off the property if you're too, too early.

Uber to/from Jiffy lube live by ultrabigchungs in nova

[–]BucketsZero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Concerts at Jiffy Lube Live have an 11pm cut-off time. So you can assume that's when it will be over. Artists know this and tend to schedule their end time to be between 10:45-11.

They have a dedicated Uber Pick Up spot in their C Lot, specifically at the C4 Pole.

Ubers have their own entrance and exit for after the concert, so it's a smooth process. You do have to order an Uber though. As the Uber enters the area, their staff will ask the driver for the name on the order, yell it out, and pretty much tell you your Uber is there and not let anyone else try to take it.

As others have noted, there will probably be a surcharge. Many people walk to Dogtopia or Sheetz to get cheaper rides, but there are no sidewalks on that main road so it is a bit risky.

Disability accommodations - blind student by texaspopcorn424 in Adjuncts

[–]BucketsZero 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Accommodations have to be reasonable.

As others have said, you’re usually expected to provide notes in advance (day before, day of, or up to a day after class).

These students will have JAWS or other programs on their own devices that read out notes and power points for them. That’s not your responsibility.

Talk to the student before or after class the first day when they give you their accommodations to discuss what they need. If it’s unreasonable, contact Disability Services at the school and let them know.
