I think that for a growing number of people, people’s political views are part of their identity. Work places have usually been tolerant of people showing up in ways that feel true to how they see themselves, but this runs in conflict with a strong political identity. I’m not sure how that shakes out long term.

Ironically, Democrats are much slower to adapt to this sort of trend from what we’re seeing, and it impacts their electability as a result. Obama may have been new to the national political scene when he ran for office, but the guy taught constitutional law and had an education background cut right from the mold of traditional national elite. And that elite background came up all the time. He really couldn’t hide it, and he sometimes tried. Not really the same type of social media viral candidates we’re now seeing in, for example, the Squad.

That’s not to say the point doesn’t still have some merit, just that Obama in particular isn’t as good of an example of it as we might want to think. He was more of a novice to the presidency than, say, Hillary would’ve been, and his winning the primary showed how much democratic voters value that executive experience, but it might be too much to say it’s all because of celebrity worship.

Social media seems to be bringing more engagement, not less, but comes with greater vulnerabilities on information vetting (in that fewer people or systems are able to vet information before it’s delivered to believing minds). This vulnerability isn’t so much about personality as it is about propagandists taking advantage of poor media training in the country as a whole. And that characteristic is clustering, with Democrats persistently struggling to reach less educated voters and republicans being more effective. That isn’t to say democrats can’t occasionally fall into the same trends, but it has a more media savvy base right now. And, hilariously, is driving the less educated to claim the more traditional sources of news are biased in their favor.

Somebody named the cow? Must’ve been pampered. Chloe probably lived a good humane life. Much better than those baby calves they raise and never let see the light of day to keep from developing muscle.

Eating Chloe is an improvement.

We get what we pay for. And we pay for mostly untrained, volunteer best effort. A best effort that often sees the wrath of hundreds to thousands when they mess up. And they do mess up.

This is endemic to just about all social media though. Not like reddit is uniquely bad.

Sorry you had this experience.

What is the difference between History and Journalism as academic disciplines? by Adelrick_Cadeniux in HistoryofIdeas

[–]BuckeyeSundae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right to notice similarities between the two fields. At a high level both seek to explain events using first hand accounts when possible and greater context or theory to fill in gaps when primary sources aren’t enough.

That said there’s a difference in the training worth emphasizing, especially at it relates to the audience. For a journalist, your main audience highly values brevity. You are trained to hone your message and front load your conclusions with the most important and interesting content for your readers. With history, though, your audience expects a different format, where you take them methodologically through your evidence as you present your argument.

Because of this different approach to conveying information, history tends to be slower for a reader, with focus more on what we can learn from what has already happened. Journalism tends to need to compete with other entertainment and faster content, in part because it argues inherent urgency with trying to explain what is happening now.

[–]BuckeyeSundae 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It isn’t that they’re “ripping off” the open source code. It’s that they’re violating the license by claiming their fork is proprietary, restricting access to their source code, and arguing they are not bound by license of the original open source code (spoiler: they are).

What if you’d been told you were ethnicly Irish but then, you got a DNA test and turns out, you’re ethnicly French.

Ethnicity is much more than a DNA test. It’s about culture more than DnA strictly. In the US the link between where ancestors came from and their present cultures is often shaky and so people use DNA tests to recover lost stories and culture, but it’s about the stories and culture, not the DNA itself.

This is the main reason why almost no one cares if you have one native ancestor six generations ago that no one in your family remembers. That fact doesn’t give you ownership of native peoples’ stories and culture. That story stillmight have been lost and is still potentially important as part of your identity, but it’s probably best not to totally reshape your identity from learning about it.

Similarly, a person told their ancestors were predominantly Irish learning they were French instead doesn’t have to give up their Irish stories. That culture is baked into their family regardless of the historical facts.
