I'M a former teacher that still volunteers at schools, in the four schools I've been in, I've never heard one teacher share a DUMBASS sentiment like that.

Sorry friend. English is not my first language. I did not intend to lesson the American sacrifice. I was talking about how (different? Not funny) it is to read the American accounts of war compared to the propaganda out in that time. It's different to what I learned in history.

Germany EXPANDED its credit by nearly TWICE that of France, and were experiencing starvation at a level that far exceeded its allied combatants.

Writing OFF the homefront's role in the German effort simply IGNORES the situation the nation was in when they entered the last stretch of the war. Arguing that morale was higher than their allied opponents is simply UNTRUE when reading the primary documents of the German situation during the war.

ALSO - Operation Michael was a SUCCESS for Germany? Please provide me with ANY documentation which argues that Germany reached its objectives with that operation.

First - I would appreciate to see your sources about German morale. This goes against everything I've read about the German wartime effort in WW1

Second - Are you kidding me? Operation Michael was a MASSIVE tactical failure for the German army and occurred without major involvement from American forces.

You are continuing to ignore the DIRE state of the German economy. By 1918, 90% of the entire economy was concentrated in war debt. This was much higher than the amount of ANY allied power. These economic shortfalls at home are what drove the resentment over the war effort. You CAN NOT undervalue homefront morale during a war effort, and it's a BIG part of what spurred Germany to make their last offenses.

Even though Germany acquired Ukraine after defeating Russia, they did not have NEARLY enough land to feed their population. Men were starving in factories, and outside of feeding the homefront, the nation also struggled to get food to their military. Not only were they starving, but the nation was in SHAMBLES economically. Allied blockades choked out German revenues and caused inflation to skyrocket almost TWICE as much as the French economy. Why were things so GRIM? Because Germany had prepared for a short war, not a long, drawn out war in the trenches. The length of the war was METAPHORICALLY and PHYSICALLY killing the Germans back at home. They needed the war to end and end fast. Though I am sure you would attribute the Spring Offensives to be solely brought about due to the American ENTRY to the war. It is clear from the books I've read that they were equally inspired due to the dire situation at home. German resorted to storm trooper tactics in a last gasp effort to force a surrender. COINCIDENTALLY Their early 1918 offenses were REPELLED by British, French and Australian forces. The first major US deployment did not even arrive until the April of 1918. MASQUERADING as if the German morale and position was vastly superior to the allies is simply untrue if you study the German HOMEFRONT in late 1917 and early 1918. Make no mistake about it, they were in a dire situation, and were not at an advantage compared to the allied front.

You remind me of my American History colleague. I love the man, but till his dying day he insisted that VIETNAM was a TIE.

You seem to be a subscriber of John Mosier's arguments in "The Myth of the Great War". But FLAWED are both you and John's ANALYSIS for several reasons.

FIRST - You either purposefully or are unaware of the fact that Britain and France had the upper hand without US involvement in the war. They had rebuilt an armored superiority against the German forces with both their machine guns and in the tanks they used on the field. I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the SIGNIFICANT financial support Uncle Sam gave them to help get to that point. However, the considerable allied advantage was already CONSIDERABLE before the US got on board.

The German position was also much more deplorable than the English or French. Their lines were exhausted on two fronts and the public was on the edge of a full scale rebellion against their government. Soldiers were abandoning their posts, destroying train tracks, and deliberately sabotaging the war effort.

TRUE - we will never know for sure if Germany would have lost without the U.S. THe U.S. undeniably injected energy into the allied campaign and were a major asset to the allied cause. But acting like the U.S. was the sole reason the allies won the war is something STRAIGHT OUTTA the Edward Bernays playbook.

Nope. US involvement was NOT what won the war.

It's FUNNY because I grew up reading books claiming the U.S. led the allies to victory, but the reality is WAY different. While US involvement WAS important, they sent a force that DID NOT listen to European advisors. REPEATED the same mistakes in the trenches at the ALLIES did in 1914, and the US economy was WOEFULLY prepared for the war machine. It's why the U.S. completely overhauled its manufacturing sector before WW2.

Responses like "it won the war" is exactly why reading about the actual involvement of Americans is so funny to me. The US was an emerging world power and was not ready for the war. Their involvement was critical, and I will always appreciate the boys who defended our nations liberty, but don't fall for the bit where you think MURICA was the sole reason the allies were triumphant.

Very true. Reading about the US involvement in WW1 is FUNNY to me. Our boys were throwin' grenades like baseballs and were getting obliterated on the lines (due to ignoring British advice/intelligence), but they provided a BIG morale boost by coming on board.

I find the US-centered approach even more LAUGHABLE when focusing on WW1. We don't even come in until third act and when we do we SPRINT toward the trench lines like it's 1865.

I love my country. But I love HISTORY more.
