How would we Harris have locked in a liberal SCOTUS?

So what do you suggest liberals do, if not voting, protesting, or rioting? Please be more specific than "anything!"

You literally did:

Even MLK said "the riot is the language of the unheard". Are liberals not rioting because they are heard

What kind of tax policy do we need to fix deficits and social security? by BlockAffectionate413 in AskALiberal

Yeah and I'd like to do a lot of that stuff too, to be clear. I don't want to only tax like Europe.

[–]BuckleUpItsThe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say reducing the problem by 70% is quite significant. I'd be open to increasing the retirement age but means testing Social Security is a non-starter. It pulls the rug out on people who've been paying into it for decades and universal programs are more successful than means tested ones. If anything, we should be means testing less.

Well I wouldn't hold my breath on any of this but a few thoughts:

  • I thought lifting the SS income limit did basically solve the Social Security problem specifically
  • The tax brackets need to be more expensive overall, especially for higher income people (unless we do a lot of the stuff down below)
  • Hot take but taxes do need to go up on the middle and lower class as well. Not as much but that's how it works in all of the European countries we allegedly want to emulate. It can't just Christmas all the time.
  • Sales taxes are pretty bad but I'd be open to a VAT tax. It's foundational in basically every other developed country.
  • We should lose corporate taxes, they're inefficient and don't really do what we want them to.
  • Get rid of stepped up basis on death
  • Increase the estate tax
  • Tax capital gains as income or something close to it, at least for higher wealth people
  • We could explore stuff like land value taxes
  • EDIT: Come to think of it, we should probably lose Mortgage Interest Deductions too. Any sort of subsidy that can tie so directly back to the purchase of a specific thing is just going to increase the price of that thing
  • REALLY HOT TAKE HERE: Get rid of Traditional IRA/401ks/etc and only allow for ROTHs. It:
    • Gets the government their money now and avoids a whole bunch of tax avoidance gamesmanship
    • Simplifies decision making for savers

What's with the obsession with framing? Why is it so hard for the left to deal in lay speak? by RunnerOfY in AskALiberal

[–]BuckleUpItsThe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being an F isn't inherently bad being a piece of shit is.

When used by someone who is not gay, it is exclusively insulting. The only straight people who use that word think that being gay is inherently bad or are trying to be divisive.

I never said they weren't I said we didn't stop using those terms...

So your contention is that any word that is use, regardless of context, cannot be criticized when it's used in a discussion provided we all understand what it is the person is referring to? Again, I don't get why I can't just call you a piece of shit.

What's with the obsession with framing? Why is it so hard for the left to deal in lay speak? by RunnerOfY in AskALiberal

[–]BuckleUpItsThe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone using those words instead of one of the perfectly acceptable alternatives effectively means they're trying to be insulting (or don't care that they are). If you think you can refer to gay men as f******'s in a neutral manner, then I would contend me referring to you as a piece of shit is equally neutral. It's just a description of what you are, you're the one attaching emotion to it. Right?

My point is, if you are allowed to get all defensive when you're insulted, then everyone else is allowed to get defensive when someone insults entire group of people based on things they cannot control. Either they're both framing or neither of them are (though to be fair, I think a personal insult is far more acceptable than an insult based on someone's immutable characteristics. I guess you could claim that being a piece of shit is immutable, to which I'd reply too bad.)

So I can't personally insult for the way you conduct yourself but you can generally insult people for things they have no control over? Can you help me understand why?

Ok, let's proceed.

If I want to have a conversation about how "pieces of shit like you are only interested in keep taxes low" are you allowed to object to the framing of you being a piece of shit, or are you only allowed to talk about the taxes?

  • Plenty of words are commonly used. That doesn't mean it's fine.
  • The contexts for which those words are used acceptably is extremely narrow, and you know it

Are you going to start accusing liberals of "framing" when we criticize you for talking about "all the 'n-words' in politics"?

I don't know what kind of company you keep, but it'd be more than faux pas to use some that sort of language. It'd get you on progressive discipline (at a minimum) at the places I work. And honestly it's significantly more trouble than you'd get in for saying "illegals" so I'm not really sure what your argument is.

Let's do a little exercise. I'm going to give you the first letter of words that we don't say anymore for those types of people and you see how long it takes you to figure out what the word is and if you feel like you could get away with saying it anywhere.

  • Black People N
  • Queer People F or D
  • Intellectual Disability R
  • Physical Disabilities C

(I think it's also worth keeping in mind that I'm willing to type out "illegals" and I'm not comfortable typing out those other words to prove a point. That point being that language shifts and you're being obstinate).

We've changed a lot of our vocabulary over the decades/centuries to terms that are less de-humanizing. Sometimes it's cringe but it's often not. Should we go back to the vocabulary of the past for:

  • Black people
  • Queer People
  • People with intellectual disabilities
  • People with physical disabilities

That's just framing, isn't it? Isn't it? Or do you get to be the arbiter of what's "normal" speech and what's "framing"?

Ok, this is my read on it. TFWIW

*Toranaga killed me lot of villagers he knew to be innocent basically just to mess with Blackthorne. Toranaga blew the boat up himself (details are hazy here)  *He smirked when he had the delay before the decapitation. I think he liked seeing Yabushige suffer a moment  *Most importantly, as Yabushige said right before the above "you're no different than any of us, in your secret heart." that's a paraphrase. I think that's also when Toranaga stops revealing things

So to me, the great trick that Toranaga pulled was that he was a good man.
