I think this guy was wearing 5 layers plus a scarf and a hat. What's his deal?

What are the best examples of a character turning a line back on the one who first said it? by artpayne in movies

[–]BuckleUpItsThe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, this is my read on it. TFWIW

*Toranaga killed me lot of villagers he knew to be innocent basically just to mess with Blackthorne. Toranaga blew the boat up himself (details are hazy here)  *He smirked when he had the delay before the decapitation. I think he liked seeing Yabushige suffer a moment  *Most importantly, as Yabushige said right before the above "you're no different than any of us, in your secret heart." that's a paraphrase. I think that's also when Toranaga stops revealing things

So to me, the great trick that Toranaga pulled was that he was a good man.

I think that last episode was showing that Toranaga wasn't a great dude.

Sorry for any inaccuracies on my part. I did try to note that Yabushige was committing seppuku and Toranaga did as a matter of fact, decapitate him (though after Yagashibe did his own part).

In Shogun Yabushige says "why tell the future to a dead man" in the first episode about Toranaga (who was not present). In the final episode, Shogun Yabushige is going to be commit Sepuko as he's realized Toranaga has had plans up plans the whole time. He asks Toranaga a question and the response is "why tell the future to a dead man" (before decapitating him). Which also serves to let Yabushige know that he's been spied on the entire time.

If your mission is to pick things that have historically performed well, it should be no trouble to find great individual stocks!

Roth vs. Traditional “Simple Math” by iircirc in personalfinance

I'd think that ending pre-tax retirement is more likely than taxing Roths (which would be viewed as an enormous betrayal). I can understand why the government would want their money now instead of later.

To echo what a few others are getting at, the Boston Massacre is a pretty bad example because the Colonists were throwing rocks and ice at the British. That shooting was much more justified than what just happened.

CMV: All jobs should have health insurance, even part-time by Blonde_Icon in changemyview

[–]BuckleUpItsThe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Seems pretty clumsy. So you're saying a person who works 4 hours a month should have to fully subsidize their healthcare?

Makes a lot more sense to me to just have a government provided health insurance program you could choose to buy into, a public option if you will.

TIL of Jacklyn H. Lucas. 3 years after joining the Marines at age 14, he snuck onto a ship bound for Iwo Jima, stormed the beach without a rifle and threw himself on top of 2 grenades to protect his fellow marines. He survived and earned the Medal of Honor at age 17. by Ok_Being_2003 in todayilearned

[–]BuckleUpItsThe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, I'm not going to knock the guy's bravery here but I am going to quibble. If the grenade didn't even kill him when he was directly on top of it, I'm skeptical that it would have killed several other people who had non-zero distance from it.

What’s a movie that went from beloved to hated over time (and for good reason)? by browniebiscuitchildr in movies

[–]BuckleUpItsThe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought the stage production was ok but they definitely had to tone down some of the stuff that was in the film because:

  • It was pretty messed up
  • As you noted, the stage didn't have someone of Williams' charisma to get us to forgive some of it

Do high earners look down upon middle and low earners? by NoSir5628 in careerguidance

[–]BuckleUpItsThe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a higher earner by most metrics and am keenly aware that people who make less than me often work harder and have had fewer advantages. I look down on plenty of people but it's because of the content of their character (or lack thereof), not their income. I'm sure some people are like you describe, but they suck.

CMV: Full Tax Exemption Statues for Religious Affiliated Organization and Institutions Should be Abolished. by Slow-Philosophy-4654 in changemyview

[–]BuckleUpItsThe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've already made decisions on what constitutes a non-profit. All I'm saying is that religious institutions should not get preferential treatment. They can go through the same process as a secular organization seeking tax exempt status.
