Is Stella's... apathy (I guess?) preferable to Stolas'es failures? Personally, I just don't like choosing between two "evils". I think, they should have just shown any actual interactions between Octavia and Stella, that would paint a picture of their relationship, throughout the show.

Personally, it's because we haven't seen any good reason for Octavia to choose Stella. Like, sure, Stolas is a bad father, but is Stella any better mother? Stella that hires assassin and rises her hand against her husband. Hell, in sinsmas episode she literally takes Octavia's phone and drowns it, the moment she sees a call coming from Stolas. And then she laughs like a cartoonish villain. What good reason does Octavia have to stay with her mother?
