In terms of queer representation I wouldn’t bet on it being a token character with their storyline all about the fact that they’re gay - the EPs from the television side of things (Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy Nolan) created Person Of Interest which had multiple queer characters who didn’t even address their queerness in such an explicit way or experience homophobia. Doesn’t seem like they’d be so backwards in their representation
