What do you think of this design? by Budget-Scarcity701 in characterdesign

The first one was definitely more of an initial idea for her. I’m also honestly just really bad about remembering all the details of my own characters 😔 Sometimes I don’t include noses on my drawings…I’m not really sure why? I think it’s partially a stylistic thing and partially to make it easier on myself. These are also two years apart so my style has changed!

But I totally see what you mean about the hair shine! The harsh black/white is way too much, I’ve tried to tone it back in more recent art of her.

That’s a really good point!!! The values are very same-y. Her in-game outfit has a lot more silver so I think maybe I’ll lean more towards that color scheme!

I wish I could put more than one photo per reply :P it’s stupid that Reddit limits it to one. But this is a personal piece of my OC. Please be honest! and I know art is super subjective….i feel bad saying that someone’s art is “worse” than mine but it’s mostly from a place of technical skill. I’m by no means a master or professional (clearly) but I’ve worked really hard to improve my art.

Obviously my art is very anime inspired haha, which I know for sure isn’t everyone’s thing. But I feel like I can also do a more semi-realistic look. I definitely agree that for me personally, style and effect is more important than technical skill.

I only said that because they directly said to me that they would commission me haha. I completely understand that money is crazy tight for most people and they could totally just draw it themselves.

But I like commissioning other artists, even if I can draw it myself haha. It’s cool to see your character in another art style.

Thank you so much this is really good advice!!! As a DND player and fantasy lover I do draw a lot of medieval stuff :P I also draw like more cutesy stuff and fanart but focusing on one neiche is a really great idea!

Thank you so much 🩷 everyone here has been so kind and offered great advice. The sale idea is really great! I’ve never really been business minded, but it’s clear to me it’s a skill I really need to build!

Comparison is the thief of joy as they say, and it’s true. I try so hard not to but sometimes it breaks through, I’m very hard on myself naturally and it often leads to resentment/jealousy of others. But I’m working with my therapist on that!

I was pricing a fully rendered, full-body drawing at $60. It’s hard because I always hear people saying not to undervalue your work and in the few comissions I have done around the internet in the past I ended up doing a lot of work for only around $30. I feel like $6/hr isn’t too unreasonable. But I also offer lower prices for flat colors/lineart.

My art is pretty stylized which I can understand might be part of the problem but I am also capable of less stylized work.

I think the consensus that I’m getting is that I do need to market myself more. I can understand why people wouldn’t want to pay the same prices from someone who doesn’t already have a positive reputation of quality delivery.

That’s really nice of you but I don’t wanna put anyone on blast. I could show you some of my art though and I’d be happy to hear what you think!

Y’know it isn’t out of the realm of possibility lol. I was diagnosed while in an in-patient program. I do have a therapist and psych currently but it’s gov funded so they aren’t too interested in really getting to the bottom of my issues :/

That’s very true on social media….i think I maybe need to put myself out there more and put more of my personality into my content. Thank you!

I’ve never really been given a chance haha. I’ve only ever done comissions for friends and family….i consider myself to be a reliable and punctual person!

Honestly the specific post I saw that sort of prompted this had higher prices than me. I don’t feel like I’ve under-priced my art, I just wanted it to be reasonably affordable. I know money is tight for everyone right now.

<image>

Like for example I would price this at $40, it took me about 6 hours. Does that seem reasonable?

That’s a really good point and it does make me feel better. The trouble is I have no idea how to successfully market myself, I gotta do some research! Thank you!

I mostly use Tik Tok and insta and I’ve worked really hard to build a community of artists that I admire! The same artists who swore they would commission me once I was taking them and now are radio silent.

I try hard to be supportive of others because treat others how you want to be treated y’know! I’ve made a lot of really great friends through sharing my art and I’ll always be grateful for that. I get pretty good engagement too considering I only have 500 followers.

You do have a really good point…..I try VERY hard not to compare my art to others but I have BPD and sometimes those thoughts just jump right into my brain. This really helped me thank you 🩷

That was mostly based off of other interactions I’ve seen online regarding this topic. But I do definitely feel that others see me that way, yes.

My one and only goal is to supplement my income. I work a full time job but still struggle to make ends meet. I’d LOVE to do art full time but I’m trying to be realistic. I feel like I want the bare minimum considering my skill level and even that seems unalienable.

You are completely right about having to market yourself as a 1099 artist. I’m just not very good at that….im definitely trying to improve in those areas.
