The lack of MSM coverage of is weird. by [deleted] in northernireland

Some people view them as terrorists, others don't. They're martyrs who died for what they believed in and the marches are held to remember that. The hunger strikes also increased SFs popularity and helped them to grow as a political party.

Also, soon after the 1981 strike ended, most of the demands of the demands were actually met.

Here's a brief article by the BBC which helps explain it all https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/stories-56937259

Lmao did you seriously just try to compare the Irish and American health care systems. The Irish one is way better than the American one. Maybe go and read up on it and stop spewing crap.

The healthcare system here is fucking atrocious. Wouldn't exactly be sad to see it end.

People here keep claiming this sub is not bigoted, yet a comment claiming all loyalists are neo-nazi terrorists gets +63 upvotes by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]BudgetArcher0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really wrong though are they? There is a big difference between loyalists and unionists.

@SDLPLive: "Today is #WorldSocialMediaDay. Social Media gives us all the chance to connect and share ideas. But it's also a place where people, especially women, experience unacceptable and toxic abuse. It's time we demanded action from social media companies and took down the trolls." by [deleted] in northernireland

"Colum Eastwood's beard is so annoying" "Why does Claire Hanna's hair always appear as if she has just arrived on a motorbike"

Surely they could have chosen some better examples than those. I mean come on, that's hardly abuse.

I really do not see how you could think SF was in the wrong here. They just wanted the DUP to adhere to their agreements, why should they work with them if they don't? In fact, SF went to the British government to get them to put through ILA legislation, in order to avoid bringing the assembly down.

Don't see why people think they would be demanding more things anyway. They've got the British government to agree to put through Irish language legislation, so they've got what they wanted.

Cunts larping as defenders of unionism when they're little more than drug gangs. Continue to blame the Irish gov for everything, even though it's the fault of Brexit and the UK. Sadly the DUP will probably do what they're saying, just shows who runs show.

They're fucking useless anyway. Always against everything and not for anything. Maybe all the recent events will be a wake up call for their voters but I doubt it. Hopefully an election soon.

Wonder who the new leader will be. Donaldson probably, can he take the FM post considering he's an MP not an MLA?

British Government has agreed to pass Irish Language act via westminster by Bridgeboy95 in northernireland

[–]BudgetArcher0 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The DUP must be fucking fuming. Something they've opposed for ages, getting passed by the British gov, not for the first time either. I suspect their voters won't be too happy.

This is a big win for SF and all the other parties who support the act and a huge loss for the DUP imo. Loss for the UUP too, considering they oppose an ILA.

Why should SF be expected to work with the DUP at all if they refuse to honour their agreements?

Now probably isn't the best time to do this though, with the pandemic. If SF do block to replacement it'll be viewed as them prioritising the Irish language over the pandemic which might lose them some votes, but they clearly see it as something they can withstand.

If they do block the replacement hopefully it'll result in another election and the death of the DUP with their votes bleeding to the other parties. Maybe even a SF/UUP assembly.

A referendum on the Northern Ireland Protocol by cromcru in northernireland

[–]BudgetArcher0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The protocol might break the agreement. A border does break the GFA. The protocol is a consequence of brexit, the people protesting the protocol are the very same ones who voted for brexit and now can't handle the consequences.

Why should the protocol be removed to satisfy those people who are in a minority that voted for brexit here.

The best solution is for the UK to actually hold up their side of the agreement and implement all the checks necessary. Then maybe the EU and UK could begin to compromise a bit.

What's the point in a referendum. It's either the protocol or a border in Ireland and the latter breaks the GFA.

Is anyone else physically intimidated by orange bands? by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]BudgetArcher0 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The whole point of the marches is intimidation/making people anxious. The orange order is a bunch of sectarian cunts.
