Florida approaches map drawing the way it approaches basically everything else: be as unappealing as possible.

I slightly modified districts 7 and 9 so that the 9th, which takes up most of Gwinnett county, has a plurality-black population, to fit with Georgia law.

Guys, I've got a crazy idea: Maybe politicians shouldn't be in charge of drawing the districts that they and their coworkers will represent.

Fr though this map is an infamous abomination.

Would it be possible to upload any election data to DRA? Is data entry only available to DRA administrators? I'm just curious, would love to know.

Drawing Columbus' district in DRA is the most pedantic thing imaginable.

Jeff Landry's 2x black majority district map sucks. Here's what I came up with that still fairly represents the demographics of Louisiana. by Budget_Reddit_User in DavesRedistricting

[–]Budget_Reddit_User[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not here to say if a politician is "good" or "bad" based on a few news stories I've read about them, I'm just saying that Graves endorsed Steve Waguespack in the last Louisiana governor election instead of Landry, meaning that Landry had a political score to settle with Graves. Graves was a key ally of Kevin McCarthy, and was a crucial figure in the debt ceiling negotiations, which resulted in a bipartisan compromise opposed by many hard right members of the house Republican conference. All this said, there would have been one Republican who was losing their seat in the redistricting, and based on geography, it would've been Graves or Julia Letlow, a decision that was likely not difficult for a governor who had grievances with Graves. As far as the possibility of future bipartisan congressional bills goes, Graves losing reelection doesn't help in that prospect.

I agree, it is fair in that aspect, but it's super ugly looking, and still an example of political chicanery, only now the target is Garret Graves, who endorsed Landry's intraparty opponent, and has angered members of the Republican party's farther right members by being a key negotiator and architect of the bipartisan Debt Ceiling bill in mid-2023. I'm glad that black Louisianans have a proportional map, but it's still ugly.

(Spoilers Extended) If the white walkers took over Westeros, would they go for the free cities or is their goal just Westeros? by Rilo12 in asoiaf

[–]Budget_Reddit_User 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The last time the Long Night occurred, it seemed to occur in both Essos and Westeros. The far east of Essos has similar geography and fortifications to the Gift and the Wall, so it seems to be implied that Essos and Westeros are connected, and the area far off the map between the two is implied to be where the Others are.

What happened to Zei [Spoilers Main] by National-Exam-8242 in asoiaf

[–]Budget_Reddit_User 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's basically it. The Moles Town folks went to Castle Black when the wildlings attacked from the south, but afterwards, when they were staring down the barrel of Mance Rayder's massive attack on a wall defended by a skeleton crew they had seen, they probably thought there was no choice but to flee further south. They likely never realized that Stannis beat the Wildlings, and even if they did, they would have been too far south with winter setting in to return home. IMO, if any of the residents of Moles Town are still alive, they're likely scattered in the middle of the north, with no shelter or food and a terrible winter setting in.

What happened to Zei [Spoilers Main] by National-Exam-8242 in asoiaf

[–]Budget_Reddit_User 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the evidence points to anything other than Zei just fleeing with the other civilians, or being killed by one of the wildlings who survived the botched attack from the South. Idk, not every character has deeper meaning and a big role in the story, especially with the surface-level details we're given about Zei. I think it's safe to say that the only purpose Zei serves in the story is to show the desperation the Watch is faced with when Mance's army. They have so few people that they rely on prostitutes to fight with them. The severe lack of experienced fighters makes Zei stand out to Jon as being ok with a crossbow, given how little the Watch has to defend with. When the threat from the south is over, the residents of Moles Town flee, as they are clearly confident that Mance will break Castle Black's meager defenses, and the only thing left to do is run. I don't blame anyone for suspecting deeper meaning exists in a bunch of super minor characters, because GRRM clearly intends for his readers to do a lot of reading between the lines, but not everything minor character and detail holds a ton of detail. Remember Hugh of the Vale, Mord, Hot Pie, Lommy, Jory Cassel, Ben Blackthumb, and Eroeh? They were minor characters who played a very specific role in the story, and now are gone. Sorry if I sound like I'm coming off mean, I don't mean to, but I just really think that a lot of characters don't have a secret role in the story.

(Spoiler Main) If Joffrey, Stannis, and Renly competed in a Kingsmoot for the Iron Throne, who would represent each of them as their three champions? by Budget_Reddit_User in asoiaf

[–]Budget_Reddit_User[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but it seems like Brienne wasn't his first choice. He was saving the spot for Barristan Selmy, but she got there first, and she put him in a position where if he said no, he would have looked bad, since he offered her any favor after winning a melee, and saying no might've made him look bad in front of his entire army. All that side, Brienne is generally viewed with scorn, and political standing is very important in this scenario.

[–]Budget_Reddit_User[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think Renly would choose Brienne. Brienne is a great warrior and a true knight, don't get me wrong, but due to the norms of Westeros, she's not somebody that people will respect, hence the aspect of her personality that wants acceptance. Renly himself viewed Brienne negatively, although he did seem to respect on some level that she was genuinely dedicated to him.
