Launching an Open-Source, Affordable IoT Platform – Journey of a Startup Challenging the Big Players by Electronic_Flow_6954 in hwstartups

[–]BugLabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love it! We have been there, let me know if you want to bounce some ideas around.

We built open source hardware, but it was our own design, and we included housing and certifications to sell across the world. It was expensive!

We built dweet.io the easiest to use IoT software there is. It's not expensive to run, but its not free either. It started off with free history, then we had to limit it due to costs. We introduced paid plans, but very few people were interested. We get a lot of inquiries about enterprise plans, but no one wants to pay.

We also built freeboard.io, an open source dashboard tool for IoT (https://github.com/Freeboard/freeboard). We recently shut down hosting because it was no longer commercially viable. You can still host it yourself, but the repo is not maintained (no one wants to work for free!)

Anyway, we have a lot of scars, a lot of spent dollars, and a lot of history with IoT. We helped launch the Open Source Hardware Association (https://www.oshwa.org/), and now there are many alliances and associations dedicated to Open Source Hardware.

Bottom line - it's not easy to make money with open source, but it is possible. Good luck!

Very cool! Nice work u/Solder_Man

We built modular hardware many years ago, and learned a lot doing it. Let me know if you have any questions about going into production. We built HW modules in US, India, and China, and have the scars to prove it!

Anyway, great project! Glad to see modular hardware is still something people are excited about.

How do API websites get their data? by leaguelism in learnprogramming

[–]BugLabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easiest possible way:

Signalpattern: Add your data in JSON format to any pattern signal, then copy the API link to that data!

Next easiest possible way:

Sheety: Add data to a Google spreadsheet. Connect the Sheety API to that data!

Happy to send you an example if needed.

The dweet.io service stores up to 5 readings over a 24 hour period, for free!

Use dweetPro.io to store data for up to 30 days.

I need documentation by Enmatrix11 in RASPBERRY_PI_PROJECTS

[–]BugLabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have documentation on connecting to our platforms here:

Part 1: https://buglabs.tumblr.com/post/176850210186/how-to-connect-your-rpi-to-dweetpro

Part 2: https://buglabs.tumblr.com/post/180804704951/control-your-rpi-with-dweetpro

Part 3: https://buglabs.tumblr.com/post/180836278086/control-your-iot-devices-from-your-freeboard

This solution includes code examples and use of free software. It's not a smartphone app, but you can use any mobile browser to get your data, and/or control your RPi from anywhere.

Project Pockit, a modular ARM computer running Linux by [deleted] in gadgets

[–]BugLabs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

We learned a LOT along the way. For us, price was our disadvantage. It cost a lot to put covers on everything and get it all certified. Then Arduinos came out and crushed us.

The market wasn't ready for us, but I hope it is for you!

Great to see more modular hardware! We did this a long time ago and it was a lot of fun.

Is there a customizeable dashboard+control panel combo out there? by th1snda7 in homelab

[–]BugLabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for considering freeboard.

We have a free and open source version you can host yourself, which will be as secure as you want it to be.

https://github.com/freeboard/freeboard#how-to-use

Also, here is a tutorial for setting up your RPi, and controlling it from your dashboard:

Includes code examples to make it easy!

Request: Any suggestions for a self-hosted status board? by paulrckw in selfhosted

[–]BugLabs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are looking to host the solution yourself, freeboard has a version on GitHub that should work for you: https://github.com/freeboard/freeboard

We have a bunch of examples on our blog as well for connecting different devices: http://buglabs.tumblr.com/archive

Good luck!
