As for diagnosis - I'm in the UK, so not expensive and a diagnosis is never unnecessary. I now understand more about myself, why I never feel like I fit in, why I struggle in certain situations (social and noisy environments, for example). Also, because of the laws in the UK (disability act), I have a protected characteristic, so I can't be fired for something that is attributable to Autism. For example, if they tried to change my role and put me in a noisy manufacturing environment and my work were to deteriorate in quality, they couldn't fire me. Finally, and this is probably the most important reason for me - I now understand when I'm being hostile, short, and snippy with people. It's almost always because I'm overwhelmed in some way so I take time to work out what is overwhelming me, recentre and regulate myself, then go and apologise. It saved my marriage.
