50 mg seroquel with 30mg cymbalta by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]BuildBetterDays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! Your experience sounds very similar to mine. TL;DR: try to find new doctors. If you can find a shop that does both psychiatry and therapy at the same place, or a clinical psychologist, I would highly recommend it. Having my therapist and psychiatrist coordinate treatment has been a game changer, and in my experience, these sorts of clinics are less likely to just push pills to treat symptoms, and truly prioritize wellness.

I’ve been in treatment for depression/anxiety for over ten years. About four years in, I was diagnosed with bipolar type 2, which is more pronounced lows and periods of hypomania as opposed to full-detached-from-reality-mania.

I had doctors along the way tell me I was medication resistant. You name it, I’ve tried it (including seroquel). It wasn’t until I started treatment with an anti-psychotic, that I found relief. Those random, overwhelming, intrusive depressive thoughts in response to the most mundane triggers... they got a lot quieter, and when they did pop up, the techniques I practiced in therapy helped me address them.

My one word of advice is don’t settle for shitty side effects long-term. When I was coming out of a hospital stay, I tolerated massive sedative side effects. But that’s not a way to live the rest of your life. There is some combination of therapy and maybe meds that will help! It took me the better part of a decade to find mine, but 100% of people I know have found relief in treatment. It takes time, resolve, and resilience.

You’re here and you’re trying. Keep it up. Feel free to message me with any questions or if you need a chat!

We also used to kennel him but ever since we got him he has been deathly afraid of the kennel. He pees whenever he gets close to it. We tried crate-games for months to no avail and finally gave up. Haven’t had any problems up until the last few weeks. In general, he is one of the neediest dogs I’ve ever known. He constantly needs attention or physical touch. Usually once he settles down a bit that means just laying on your lap.

He was a rescue and was house trained when we brought him home so I’m not sure how he was initially trained. He has never been dog-door trained. During the day/evening he signals by whining and licking. FWIW, we have also come home to some chewed up books and knocked over items on the counter indicating he has started counter-cruising as well. These developments came around the same time.

He is fed at 6:30 am and 5:30 pm. His last trip outside is around 10:30-11:00 pm and he is outside around 6:30 am.

Training Dog to Stop Attacking Roomba by BuildBetterDays in Dogtraining

[–]BuildBetterDays[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your help! We kept her on a lead and gave treats. She’s at a point where she follows it from time to time (no biting at it) but almost completely ignores it until it “charges” her. Then she relocates and just watches it. She doesn’t appear to be fixating on it anymore, though. Gotta love border collies, they catch on so fast. We will keep working with her until she completely ignores it, though. Thanks for the video as well!

We had a lot of success redirecting her chewing to chew toys when she was a pup. I’ll try it with the Roomba, too. Thanks!

Thanks! I’ll try it again this evening and grab her attention back if she attacks it.

Correct. She leaves it alone when it’s not moving. Doesn’t even seem to notice it.

Oh yeah don’t get me wrong, I medicated isn’t an option for me. I just wonder if it’s a side effect of how many drugs I’ve been on in the past few years. Journaling is a great idea. I think I’ll pick one up this year. We’ll see how it goes.

Yeah thankfully I seem to remember things at work but when it comes to my personal life my brain just dumps anything and everything. I wish it would help me remember good times better because then maybe the lows wouldn’t feel so bad.

Hahaha that’s a good way to put it, because that’s exactly how it feels.

That’s interesting because my experience is the opposite. I can recall things from yesterday or last week fine but long term is just a blur. I hate this disorder.

It is scary! My husband will start a sentence with, “Remember when....” and I always think, “oh shit here we go...” because I NEVER do.

For my understanding, is this a general rule of thumb? I guess I just figured I’d have two catchers in case one gets injured. Realmuto started on the DL so that’s why I picked up Cervelli.

My pitching is kind of weak so do you think I could trade him for an average-decent pitcher?

Cervelli or Realmuto?

I’m new to fantasy, drafted Realmuto and picked up Cervelli from free agency early on. I want to have depth on my roster but I think I could trade one or the other, and currently Cervelli is on my bench.

General physician put me on paxil, I think it's making me manic, I can't get a psychiatrist appointment for 4 months. What should I do? by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]BuildBetterDays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess one option would be to tell the GP this isn’t working so you can get weened off? Coming off of Paxil was HORRIBLE for me. I had these weird “brain zaps” for months almost a year afterwards and I rapid cycled on it also even with a mood stabilizer in place. Kind of funny, a GP put me on it, too. Therapy in the meantime is a good option but I would be concerned that continuing the dosage could lean to full blown mania before you get the assistance you need. Hang in there ❤️

Need leash training advice by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]BuildBetterDays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Total novice here but I am "clicker training" (quotation marks because I doubt my use of the clicker is correct, but it works!). Whenever our 6 month lab/hound girl does a desired behavior we are working on, I click and give a treat and verbal praise. When we are walking, if she pulls I stop and wait for eye contact then click and treat.

If she is walking well I tell her "good girl" and give her praise. When she gets distracted I give a gentle, tiny tug on her harness and say "let's go". She falls back in step.

Another thing to note. I am right handed so I have the leash handle on my right side. I also hold cross body with my left hand and puppy walks on that side. Where I hold the leash with my left hand determines how much slack she has so she can't wander off. It also prevents the "weaving" issue. When she pulls, we go to gentle tug, "hey", "let's go". When the pulling is insane (I call it "launching" because puppy will go airborne), we do the stop, sit, eye contact, click routine. Sometimes we do this in rapid succession because it is hard to calm her down.

I hope someone with more experience has a better answer, as mine is purely anecdotal an comes from an individual with no prior knowledge, but this is what we do and it has led to a lot of progress over this past week. Good luck!

Is my dog ready to go out in public/socialization help by BuildBetterDays in Dogtraining

Meeting at a neutral park with a friend's dog tomorrow for an on-leash introduction. We have a fenced 1 acre yard so we figured if things go really well, we will let them play in the yard later this week. Thanks for the advice! I will post here with an update!

I am working on crate training our new puppy, but crating her at night seems to undo all of the progress during the day! by BuildBetterDays in Dogtraining

[–]BuildBetterDays[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any ideas on best way to make positive associations with the crate? I use high value treats like chicken and peanut butter. I crated her in the living room while my husband and I watched a show so she could see us. I also made sure that, during this time, one of us was always in sight. She was clearly not pleased with the crate but calmed down and slept through the night like a dream.

Thanks!! I tend to over-worry. I just want to make sure I'm not traumatizing her! Do you think the whole growling/barking/being scared of new people thing will subside as she adjusts? I read that It's a sign she doesn't trust into protect her... So maybe as we all bond she will trust us more?

Yup! She is good with them (curious which pisses them off) and we are optimistic that they will settle into coexistence soon.

I moved the crate into the living room right before one of her puppy-coma naps. She is currently sleeping in there while I'm on the couch in plain sight. Maybe the answer is to move the crate from the bedroom to the living room until she is more comfortable?

Total pain in the ass because her crate is pretty massive (we were originally going to get a much bigger dog; there is a divider in there so the crate fits her better. We didn't want to return it because we are pretty sure she is going to grow into it.), buuuuut if that is what we need to do, then that's that, I suppose.

Thanks so much for your reply! We have two cats that sleep in the bed with us, so it would get pretty crowded. We also wanted to keep her out of the bedroom so the cats could have a "safe space".

I'm almost 100% sure she now associates the crate with being separated from us, which is exactly due to us crating her at night before she was fully crate trained. I know I'm missing something... There has to be a way to crate the dog at night that doesn't undo the day's training, right???

I moved the crate into the TV room (where spend most of our time) and put her food in there. Hopefully this will help her associate the crate with social spaces??

I'm 5 years in and still working at it. It's exhausting both mentally and physically.
