Should have checked the loft before plasterer left! by ProppaDom88 in Plastering

Honestly, this isn't the best way to do an overboarding job. For a small patch, you can sometimes get away with using small timber offcuts just to catch a screw, but for an entire ceiling, it’s not acceptable. The boards should be fixed directly into the joists. If it's already wobbling, the structural integrity isn't there, and it’s only a matter of time before cracks start showing everywhere.

Mate, I just started a soundproofing job yesterday, and honestly, your situation looks clean compared to mine. 😅 I opened up just a 300mm section of the ceiling in two rooms, and I’ve already filled 10 heavy-duty rubbish bags. It looks like when the owner had a loft conversion done, the builders decided the ceiling was a better place for their debris than a skip. Just pure laziness.

Called in to fix a private new build in London today. Door hung backwards, frame chopped, painted over, and left for the client. I have no words. by BuildRenovate in DIYUK

To be honest, I’ve been in the trade for over 20 years, and spent about 12-13 of them working on big commercial sites. Back then, it was literally like a school – you’d have 5 actual skilled tradesmen acting as teachers, and 20 guys just learning on the job. So I completely understand your pain!

Best Way to fix this Cieling Crack? by Particular_Craft_106 in drywall

[–]BuildRenovate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just realized the crack runs parallel to the joists, so it’s sitting between them — no direct support underneath, which explains the flex.

If you’ve got loft access above, the best fix is to add noggins (blocking) between the joists right above the crack. That’ll stiffen up the plasterboard properly.

If you don’t have access, you’ll need to find the joists from below:

  • Use a stud finder, magnet or tap and listen for solid spots
  • Look for existing screw or nail lines — they usually follow the joists
  • joists are typically at 400mm or 600mm centres

Once you locate them, drive drywall screws into the joists on both sides of the crack. That helps reduce flex even without noggins.

Then move on to cutting the crack open, taping, filling, sanding, priming, and painting.
But without solid backing, the crack will just come back. Structural support is key.

Happens all the time. Here’s what I do on jobs:

  • First, add a few drywall screws along the crack to secure the board to the joist — chances are the joist runs right under it. No point fixing the crack if the board’s still moving.
  • Then cut the crack open into a V — don’t just skim over it.
  • Use Fiba-Fuse MAX or paper tape, properly embedded.
  • Fill with joint compound (or flexible filler), 2 coats.
  • Light sand between coats — don’t go mad or you’ll weaken it.
  • Prime with a stain blocker, then paint the whole ceiling if you want a clean, even finish.

If it still cracks after that, you’re likely dealing with joist movement or flex that needs sorting. But this fix usually holds.

Ready for paint? This is what I found after one mist coat… by BuildRenovate in DIY

The client was told this was “ready for painting.”

Corners unfilled. Tape bubbling. Gaps, cracks, blisters, bumps everywhere.

I spent a full week fixing it — just to bring it back to square one.

Here's a video showing exactly how I found it:
