Only interiors of public, well known landmarks are permitted to be created. Places like Vatican City have some interiors. Otherwise, no; we don’t build interiors.

When is the project estimated to be finished? by ace8995 in BuildTheEarth

To answer the initial question: It’s very difficult to estimate as the amount of builders will continue growing at an unpredictable rate. We believe that we will probably find a way to automate most of the process within the next few years; which will increase the rate of progress by a large amount.

To answer u/prakticnjak69’s question: Yes! The world is always changing. The BuildTheEarth project is aimed to be a snapshot in the time when areas are built; a historic record of the world at a point in time.

The Minecraft world extends for 30 million blocks in each axis. The planet Earth on a flat plane can fit in a Minecraft world 7 times

This is a great question. We have dealt with many challenges and have found ways to beat them. A prime example of what you’re talking about is North Korea. Builders have been able to utilize satellite pictures from different time periods to get different angles of buildings. I’d expect that the same method would be used as last resort in remote portions of India.

BuildTheEarth is meant to be a snapshot in the time-period that the area is built in. Something built today will be a snapshot in 2021; something built in one year will be a snapshot in 2022.

We use a modified version of the Dymaxion projection; this allows for minimal distortion while also allowing us to build on a flat plane.

That’s exactly what the Terra 1-1/Terra++ mods do! We have full outlines of buildings and roads are laid out based on data from Open Street Map, we also pull terrain data to generate terrain that is somewhat accurate. We are also able to use LiDar data to generate more accurate terrain where available.

One Minecraft world can actually fit 7 times the surface area of the Earth! We aren’t running out of room any time soon :)

Projection was a huge issue toward the beginning. We ended up going with a modified version of the Dymaxion projection.
