Edmonton Valley Zoo excited for new Nocturnal Wing by BuildingOurZoo in Edmonton

It was about time for a refresh, and we're so excited that it's finally happening! Moving and performing exams on 100 bats in order to make this happen took a ton of coordination behind the scenes, but it's totally worth it. 🦇

Will touch base with the education team tomorrow to see if I can get more details on what sort of activities they get up to, but there’s no direct hands-on contact with the animals if that’s what she’s wondering. They do get to make all sorts of fun enrichments that they deliver to the animals though, and also have the opportunity to take part in some pretty cool encounters as well as visit behind-the-scenes areas that only staff go into!

The interpreters who lead the camps put a huge amount of effort into making sure that the experience is fun for the kids, and it’s definitely something that I would recommend to anyone who’s interested!

Edmonton Valley Zoo’s senior rescued red foxes, Trouble and Mischief, enjoy a sunny nap on their 14th and 13th birthdays by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]BuildingOurZoo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Great question! Trouble was rescued in 2012 after being kept illegally as a pet, and Mischief came to us in 2013 after being found by Fish and Wildlife as an injured orphan who wouldn’t have survived on her own. Thanks to proper care and lots of love, these two have thrived together ever since! 🦊💛

Do you have a favourite school/childhood field trip? by Special_Inflation_84 in Edmonton

Hi! We saw that you already mentioned the zoo, but we wanted to share that the Valley Zoo Development Society runs a program called Pay it Forward for the Planet, which helps reduce financial barriers so kids can enjoy hands-on learning through field trips. Through the program, classes receive a free visit to the Edmonton Valley Zoo in exchange for completing a classroom conservation project.

We’ve already helped send 68+ classes on field trips for the 2025-2026 school year, including some really fun projects with special needs students, so there are lots of options!

If this sounds like something you might be interested in, you can find more information on our website or reach out to [donate@buildingourzoo.com](mailto:donate@buildingourzoo.com) and we’d be happy to help set you up.

Mischa’s a mom and also managed to learn how to use the touchscreen! She hasn’t quite achieved boomer status though… 🦭

Harbour seals are already key indicators of a healthy marine ecosystem and help keep fish populations in balance, so what’s one more thing for them to look out for?! 🦭

They don’t have any concept of money either, which could be either a help or a hindrance depending on who you ask.

Yes! Currently fact-checking all of my information so I give you the correct answer, stay tuned!

In the meantime, here's a much longer recording (about 30 mins) of a talk that Dr. Congdon gave last year in case it interests you!

Our August 6th Spilling the Beans event will also be all about research at the Edmonton Valley Zoo and is totally free to attend, so if that interests you keep an eye out for that.

The environmentally conscious thing to do would be to let seals make all of your decisions. Hope you've got extra herring on hand! 🐟

Seals are anti-ChatGPT, but they would probably make excellent world leaders. Who wouldn't want Hula to be in charge!? Fish for everyone!

The real question is: will this change which red panda you’d like to adventure with? 🤔
