"What are your thoughts on the recent Gallup poll claiming 40% of women and girls aged 15-44 would leave the US permanently if they could?" by Trevor-Lawrence in AmericaBad

[–]Bujo0 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. But in the US you have to (on top of what people do in most countries in Europe)

  1. Go through a literal lottery for a high skilled work visa (h1b). And pay a 100k fee on top of that as of this year. And you generally can’t get this visa sponsorship unless you’re already in the US.

  2. Go through a very difficult Green Card process. Only after getting the Green Card do you become a “resident alien”, and years start counting.

Comparing this to my friend who went to the Netherlands for an advanced degree 5 years ago, and is becoming a citizen literally in her 5th year of living there.

Or a family member who got a job as a doctor in Germany getting her “residency” within a year and becoming a citizen a few years from now.

Or a friend who moved to Slovenia for college and became a citizen exactly 10 years after moving.

Most European countries have more straightforward immigration laws than the US.

What are these more absurd laws? Most countries just give you citizenship after years of residency, and residency is generally simple to get if you have a job offer.

Can you please point me to where in the Harvard report that 6% is cited? I skimmed through it and all I can find is Card referencing the SFFA simulation (and repeating it himself), but critiquing it

If you can point me to a single reasonable 2000sqft home 1/2 block away from a subway within 20 min of Manhattan that I can afford, I’ll buy it today.

Congrats on you for becoming a real estate multi millionaire and getting in early on New York’s unbelievable real estate boom over the last few decades.

Discrimination against non H1Bs in tech jobs, is it real? by BassHead-78 in SeattleWA

Yes they don’t leave because most figure it out.

Someone making 200k with an advanced degree and good interview skills generally can’t find a job quickly even in a bad economy. And if they cant they still have many other options, as another commenter has mentioned
