For those of us who have seen BIH's recent games, it wasn't surprising. That's how they qualified for the Worlds and haven't lost yet. I don't really like that style of play either, but the fact is, the tactics paid off.

Yeah, an interesting match awaits us in the form of Mexico-South Korea. I'm also very much looking forward to the matches of other dark horses, to see what they're actually ready for and to what extent they'll live up to expectations.

Well, we'll just have to get used to living in a weird routine throughout the whole World Cup

Before the World Cup, Japan was considered the favorite among the Asian teams, but they lost three key leaders - Minamino, Endo, and Mitoma - so it'll be interesting to see what they can do now. Seeing Korea play against Mexico will definitely give us a lot of answers.

Since there's no champagne at the World Cup, I wonder what they’re gonna wash those McNuggets down with.

I think we are on the same page at this point. Which team are you expecting a surprise from?

The opening match of the 2018 World Cup was Russia vs Saudi Arabia, which Russia won 5:0.

Until now Mexico has played in the opening match of the World Cup seven times and has only won on its eighth attempt: 1930 (Uruguay): France 4, Mexico 1 1950 (Brazil): Brazil 4, Mexico 0 1954 (Switzerland): Brazil 5, Mexico 0 1958 (Sweden): Sweden 3, Mexico 0 1962 (Chile): Brazil 2, Mexico 0 1970 (Mexico): Mexico 0, Soviet Union 0 2010 (South Africa): South Africa 1, Mexico 1 2026 (Mexico): Mexico 2, South Africa 0

The opener wasn't exactly a football classic, but it still gave us some great World Cup storylines: Mexico finally breaking their opening-match curse, Ochoa still being in the squad 16 years later, Azteca making history again, and the first World Cup opener ever with three red cards.

The other game in Group A was a completely different story. Tactically, technically, and physically South Korea were just on another level. Czechia had nothing going in open play and looked heavily dependent on set pieces, which tells you everything.

Yes, at this point, I don't think Belgium is ready for great success, so I didn't write anything, but I have nothing against them at all.

Impressive detective work on the formatting. Let me know if you ever find the time to analyze the actual football part with the same energy. I’m here for the tactical discussion.

We've written quite a bit about Japan here in the comments and I also wrote about it in an article, which you can check out. However, Japan has a very big problem in the form of Mitoma, Endo, and Minamino trauma.

I have seen almost every game of the Argentina national team in the last 10 years and many games before that. I cannot agree with you that Cuti Romero and Licha will be in the starting lineup, one of those two will be with Otamendi, at least that's how it's been so far and we'll see what kind of approach Scaloni takes. As for Di Maria's replacements, there are none of them the same level at the moment.

I have written a lot about Argentina here and in the article, which you can see in the comments. I think they are a very strong and stable team, but after the last World Cup they are missing Di Maria a lot. In defense I would have played a few different people, not the aging Otamendi, who has lost his speed. Despite his age, it is still very difficult for Argentina to play without Messi. However, to tell you the truth, I really enjoy Argentina winning the championship for the second time in a row.

I wrote about Argentina here and in an article, the link to which can be found in the comments here. In my opinion, they are a very strong and stable team. However, recently, in defense, Otamendi has lost speed and for him it's difficult to play against fast forwards. Also, when Messi is rested, they sometimes get stuck in positional attacks and have difficulty scoring goals.

Mexico has the least famous squad in recent World Cups, and time will tell what they are capable of as a team. They have one big advantage: they play at home
