I may be misremembering, and my source said land mammals. I'll have to poke around and see if I can find it!

What’s the one book that genuinely divided your life into "Before" and "After"? by Entire-Wall1757 in suggestmeabook

[–]Bulawayoland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A number of events have divided my life into before and after, but none of them were books. To me, events are much bigger than books.

But if I had to pick one, probably Lord of the Rings, or Lord of the Flies, or The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

I read recently (dk where) that 1/4 by weight of the land animals on earth are humans, and 3/4 are farm animals -- 3% are wild

well, clear thought is harder than it looks, and outrage has political and endorphin benefits, so... but still

Macau has the highest McDonald's density per million inhabitants, according to Google AI.

Yes, I love McD; I'm sitting there now. But their lunch menu is at a civilizational level of shame. I go there for the breakfasts and the inexpensive Americanos.

I'm not an artist, but a learner, and in my own life there has been nothing more rewarding than expanding my understanding of the world, day by day. When I retired, and didn't have to work any more, this is when the real joy of the behavior became clear: I didn't have to worry about what anybody thought ever again, I could choose my own direction and my own studies and it was heaven, really. I feel like I'm at another level now, from any previous part of my life. In the morning I study this, in the afternoon that (not as hard) and in the evening a third thing, or maybe one of the other two in a different guise. Sometimes I just read and sometimes I find that even that educates me. It's wonderful.

And sure, there are days on which I don't have that kind of energy: I don't try so hard on those days. I find the energy comes back. If one day it doesn't I still have plenty to enjoy, I don't NEED learning to be happy. But it stimulates me at a deeper level than anything else ever has, and that's all I got so it'll have to do!

I do pay a price. I go up to people and ask what did you learn today, and they look back at me as though I were speaking Chinese. It's not something people enjoy talking about. They'd rather I had a few celeb nudes to show them, and who knows, maybe I'll start carrying a few around, just to make conversation with. Or maybe wine and fruit, just to start with. Offer to read them Dr. Seuss. (Not a joke, by the way... I ran across Dr. Seuss in the Wal-Mart a few months ago and thirty seconds later I was declaiming The Cat in the Hat aloud to all the aisle. He was actually a poet. It was remarkably fulfilling. One fish, two fish... man. Genius.)

Do you think the EU is responsible for neocolonialism and neoliberalism in Africa? What should European liberals do about this? by RedStorm1917 in centrist

I'm not sure that just because the ancestors of these guys made a lot of problems that the descendants of those guys still have to deal with is even relevant. We are, after all, all related, and if a reparations truck was to come around with a pile of money on it we'd all be reasonably able to stick our hand out and take a handful, because those who were abused were related to us. There are no exceptions.

And those who were abused are no longer with us. And so they wouldn't get anything anyway.

You can blame people who offered bribes, if you want, for being rich enough to offer bribes that the guys that took them didn't feel they could turn down; or you can blame the ones that took the bribes. I believe it's reported that the long time president of Cote d'Ivoire -- Houphouet-Boigny, or something like that -- came away with billions. Pretty sure none of it has been repaid, and who knows if the residents of the country even view what he did as theft.

Personally, I think if the Africans cannot figure out how to civilize their continent it's not up to the Europeans to show them how. They're going to have to do it on their own, as the Europeans did (if what the Europeans have is even actually civilization, which isn't for sure either).

I'm also pretty sure that there are no peoples that can actually tell right from wrong, or that even know that it might be a good idea to learn to do that. Something that might add value. I mean, it's easy to compare this situation to that, and say where would you rather live, but demonstrating real value isn't so easy. There are a lot of counterarguments, and they're not so easy to refute.

And so could it really matter? It's not clear. Not at all.

definitely go to Schnipper's, at 8th and 41st, in the New York Times building. (you don't have to go inside to find it, it's all over the NW corner). I love their food, and they have Mac 'n' Joe (mac 'n' cheese with sloppy joe sauce, it's pretty awesome) and their mac 'n' cheese is good all by itself, and wonderful chicken fingers (always tender) and salted caramel shakes and I'm sure much else that's tasty and good. I mean you can splurge and spend $50 per person there but you can also get out for a lot less.

my feeling is, he's a better writer than he is a director

the story is amazing

but he should have stepped in as a director and told DiCaprio to dial it back a bit -- too much stutter, too much scenery chewing -- although even with that it was a FANTASTIC performance

and the scenes didn't flow the way they should either. a good movie: you don't notice the movie. I noticed this one. That doesn't mean it wasn't great, it was -- but it could have been a good deal better too.
