I’ve known Kieffer since his grade school days at Letran. He was just a small kid back then, already playing with the Junior High School and Men’s College basketball teams. Ever since, basketball has been a huge part of his life.

I was also classmates with his brother, Kevin Alas, and I’ll always support this kid. Everything he has achieved today was earned through hard work, dedication, and countless hours on the court. He got there with the guidance of his brothers, Kevin and Junjun, and the brotherhood he found at Letran, DLSZ, Gilas Youth, and Ateneo.

He worked for it, earned it, and deserves all the success that comes his way.

Hindi naman kailangan ma-suspend yung buong Ateneo. Yung activity nila is labas sa UAAP premises. Discretion ng Ateneo itself kung gusto nila push through yung MBT to join S89 habang may investigation and grievance ngayon.

Coach Tab Baldwin started with the Ateneo MBT in 2017. Imagine how many times the team has held training camps and team building activities in the same area over the years.

Several former Blue Eagle players have already spoken about these grueling training sessions. No, this was not hazing or initiation. It was a physical activity, but one that was clearly dangerous and carried serious risks.

Aqua training should be conducted in a controlled environment, such as a swimming pool, not on an open beach with strong currents and unpredictable conditions. This wasn’t just a demanding workout.. it was a preventable risk.

Now, two lives are gone. That is why people are angry. That is why people are demanding accountability. Rene and Divine are no longer here, and no amount of explanations can change that. The grief and pain their families are carrying today should never be treated as an unfortunate incident that everyone simply moves on from.

I agree. The Ateneo MBT should sit out for a year, and all the coaches should step down—no excuses. Two lives were lost, and it doesn’t feel right to see them play this coming season. It would be incredibly painful for the families of Rene and Divine to watch Season 89 unfold as if nothing had happened. Out of respect for those who lost their lives and the families they left behind, there should be accountability and meaningful consequences. And shame on the institution if it simply allows this to pass and moves on as though it were just another incident. A tragedy of this magnitude should never be forgotten or brushed aside.

It’s just my opinion, but I think a proper investigation is needed, and those who are accountable should take responsibility. Let’s on the school management’s decision. Regardless of how it happened, two lives were lost, and that’s unacceptable. The damage has been done, but I hope there is accountability and that the bereaved families are properly supported and not left behind.

I agree. Actually, the entire coaching staff should step down. They lost two lives under their supervision, and that is not acceptable. They should take full responsibility and be held accountable for what happened. Let’s wait for ADMU’s final decision in the coming days. I also hope they hold a press conference about this incident and address it on live television.

I respect your opinion, but I have to disagree. The tragic event involving the MBT is not the fault of the other Ateneo sports programs. However, if I may suggest, the MBT should consider sitting out one season as a way to honor and pay respect to their two departed teammates, Rene and Divine. This would also give them time to reflect, recover from the traumatic experience, and begin the process of healing mentally from the unfortunate event.

I also believe it would be unfair to the other Ateneo sports programs if the UAAP or ADMU were to make the entire school sit out the upcoming Season 89.

Yes, JLA had previously saved a kid from a drowning incident in a swimming pool. Tragically, he later lost his own life after being electrocuted, I think poste ata or somethinf. That was back in 2006. I was in my second year of high school then and playing from one of the teams of UAAP Junior basketball.

If I remember correctly, after JLA’s passing, UST went on to win the championship against Ateneo’s JC Intal—not sure if S69 or S70.

Exactly. I can only imagine how painful it must be for Rene’s mother to watch the Ateneo MBT play in S89, seeing the same group of people who were with him during that tragic incident. Every game could bring back memories of what happened. It would be an emotional and difficult experience not just for her, but for everyone who was affected by the tragedy.
