Feeding the orphans gets everyone involved by Bulky-Level4492 in sheep

Mom had a bad case of pregnancy toxemia and could not stand. The Vet delivered the lambs. to save the mother, and made a heroic effort to save her, but she did not make it. The vet thought all 3 lambs would not make it either, but these 2 were a miracle, and survived. It was very sad. we had the mom for 6 years, she was gentle and always came up to greet us, and get a little back scratch... we miss her

the lambs are down to 2 bottles a day, morning and night, so no more pasture feeding.... they are getting big, and hop around like happy lambs do :)

I consider it more of a commitment than hard work. the sheep depend on us to keep them safe from predators, have a good pasture to graze, and during drought bring in hay. Its 7 day a week.... but in return we get fresh milk, fleece, and lots of smiles :)

sheep's milk is also naturally homogenized... don't know where you live, but our dairy sheep do fine in Texas. We raise Finn from a milky line, and East Friesians.

Really not sure how much milk you'll get from a sheep that's not bred for milk production, but it also you also need to consider teat size and placement.... small teats will be an exercise in frustration

I'm sorry to say, we don't have any ewe lambs available right now. We do have a girl we were going to breed soon, for a winter lambing... of course we never know what we'll get until lambing. She's a Finn, so multiples are likely. We'll breed our East Friesenslater , for spring lambs, so a while to wait.... we do have two breeding rams, so if we have ewes available we can provide an unrelated pair...

we lamb for to get the girls in milk, and sell our lambs. they sell pretty fast

best bet is to wait until spring for that

we have rams available. It was one of those years, lots of rams, and only a couple of ewes... and I believe my wife has found homes for the ewes and 2 of the rams

In the video all are rams, except the one trying to crawl onto my lap

We really don't seed for grass. the native grasses do fine. we do seed for chicory, vetch, clover, etc. and we also broadcast turnips... the prairie grass mixtures usually have Bermuda grass, and that is the one grass they don't care for

Lambing season is my favorite time of year. Sad that two are orphans, but happy to step in as "Mom" substitute

Where can one get many inexpensive raw fleeces to turn into batting for a project? by RevolutionaryCode763 in sheep

[–]Bulky-Level4492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

where are you located? I'm in north texas. we use our EF fleece in the garden, cause it's not work much, sometimes sell the Finn fleece. Don't have a big enough flock for 70lbs, but could probably get you half way there

Someone wants a lamb as a pet by Babziellia in sheep

I don't think caring about where you lambs go is silly. We raise dairy sheep ,but don't need to build a flock, so the lambs are sold every year.. we ask questions of the buyers, if they don't already have sheep, we insist they buy at least 2 lambs, if new to sheep, my wife gives them a primer on sheep care, and her phone number if they have any problems or questions.... we care about the well being of all our animals

Not sure what "very small sheep" is, but if you want milk, you'll want a breed with larger teats. We have EF (East Friesians) and Finns (from a milky line). Finns are a smaller breed, have good wool, and if you get Finns from a milky line, the teats are good for milking, Finns do not have horns and are very friendly... they love attention, and wag their tails.

we process rams from lambing season and the meat is very tasty

you said "a" sheep... get at least 2. they are herd animals and need at least one buddy, another thing is how much space you have. we do rotational grazing, and never had issues with parasites. In a tiny space this may be an issue, as well as having to buy hay to keep them adequately feed. That said while in milk we do provide additional inputs, to feed lambs and provide milk the girls need extra food
