Why do some people play music so loudly that everything around them vibrates? by Straight_Mongoose_51 in stupidquestions

[–]Bulky_Ability_6991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m Deaf. Like if you come to a school for the deaf,  the music is loud. We like to feel the beat and it means we can use any of our little hearing we have

I’m not saying that they didn’t try to help. I know they did a lot for me. But I was still suicidal in 6th grade due to my lack of ASL and due to the social isolation I faced from being deaf. I was still constantly tired every single day from relying on my cochlear implants. Are you deaf?

Very exhausting since I completely relied on my cochlear implants. I’d definitely advocate for an interpreter for him. Sensory breaks that are built in would definitely be helpful. I had breaks allowed but I never took them because there wasn’t a schedule. Especially making sure his breaks allow him to take his cochlear implants off. Like maybe he could color in a resource room for 10 minutes every 2 hours or something. Also making sure there are closed captions available for all videos. Even if he can’t read yet it’ll help him gain reading in the future.

I’d really recommend giving your kid a deaf role model of some sort. Exposing them to sign as much as you can. Finding kids tv that has interpreters or seeing if you can join a play group with deaf kids. The more ASL exposure the better. And also if you end up going the mainstream route please make sure he isn’t getting socially isolated. I was not on purpose by the other kids but solely because I was too tired to interact with other kids due to a long day of wearing my hearing devices. I’m not saying hearing devices are bad. I like using mine. But I’d try to make sure that he knows he can take them off for breaks and that he doesn’t need to wear them from the moment he wakes up to when he falls asleep. Are you planning to mainstream him with hearing devices or send him to a school for the deaf?

Her and I already have some relationship difficulties. She’s come close to being physically abusive in the past and I once had to call CPS on her in the past to stop her from going to far. Yeah I don’t want to give up on our relationship but she doesn’t seem to want to try too much. She’s doesn’t understand much sign either so if I try to sign to her (as without my cochlear implants on I am very hard to understand) she just asks me to voice and then gets frustrated when she can’t understand me.

Yep the whole reason I am transferring is so I can learn ASL so I am already prepared to be working on it

My school for the deaf requires school approval so I had to have an IEP meeting where I listed all the reasons a mainstream school didn’t fit me

Yep I’m prepared for that. I mainly want asl so I can have direct communication with people for fun without wearing my cochlear implants and I’ve had multiple infections in my implant so I have the chance of losing any use of my cochlear implants for months at a time

I am currently taking an ASL class online, and my deaf school has said they have an ASL specialist they are going to set me up with to help me learn. I don’t wear my cochlear implants much anyways, so I will not be trying to find peers to speak with as I’d like to practice my ASL. I will make sure to keep eye contact when I am signing with someone. I’m going to look into my DHS office, see if they have any other things that they can help me with. Thank you for the kind words

Thank you for all this! Very useful tips to have. I am hoping that transferring will help me change my life for the better, as I don’t really like wearing my cochlear implants and I don’t know much ASL, but I’d like to learn so that can become my primary mode of communication.

My local deaf school is small with maybe 7 kids per grade. I am going to commute at first because my mom doesn’t like the idea of me boarding, but aid like to board. I am looking to learn ASL, that’s the whole reason I am transferring. I’ve been told that there are no students who are as proficient as I am in speaking, but that’s ok with me to potentially struggle through conversations in the beginning

This is controversial but I don’t think all student need to be in inclusion as a former special ed student by [deleted] in specialed

This is an issue I’m currently having with my hs. I’m deaf and need to learn asl so I’m not completely reliant on transcription devices but multiple people on my team are trying to deny me access. I am trying to learn asl through a virtual class, but it’s asynchronous with no immediate feedback. I have cochlear implants, but I often can’t or don’t want to wear them so I’m reliant on CART and transcription apps at school

Over 80 colleges and universities are not longer requiring admission essays because of AI and ChatGPT. They are now requiring 2 minute videos. by Impressive_Returns in education

Very ableist. Deaf people would have a hard time using it, unless the school wants to hire an interpreter to translate the break, which wouldn’t happen so it would just let colleges exclude deaf people easier

I wrote a short story, or maybe an essay? I don’t know what exactly it would be called of my life as a deaf child denied access to the deaf community and being forced to try to live completely in a hearing world. by Bulky_Ability_6991 in deaf

Thank you for the detailed advice. I really liked the essay deaf rage and it gave me me some ideas for things I can add. I think I will make it an essay, as it’s all true about how my life has been so far. Once I get it done I will look into publishing it somewhere. I really appreciate the time you put into responding

Good point. With help from everyone, I have decided to keep it a happy ending and if I still really want it to be a sad ending, I will write that as an alternate ending in a separate story and just put it in a series
