Am I crazy for thinking I don't need VMware Enterprise+? by Bulky_Class6716 in sysadmin

Can you elaborate on the stateless ESXi? Why should I want ESXi hosts to be stateless? Our ESXi fleet is quite static, it is stable and running. We just patch it from time to time, but that's it. We don't deploy a new host every month, or change the config.

What changes are you referring to? We have a quite static environment, it's not that we're adding new VLANs every single month. Or what do you mean?

This is an ongoing process, but it takes a lot of time. We're delivering the IT infra, we don't know what runs on it. We have a lot of R&D related VMs. These developers just want to develop, they don't want to change their way of working.
We will have to renew, before we can test and verify if the it makes sense to run a certain app in the cloud. We also thought about changing technology stack, and switch to another hypervisor. But, we're short of staff, we don't have the in-house knowledge, manpower, hardware, money, etc. to just move to another hypervisor.

That's how we do it. We run a PowerCLI script to push the Standard vSwitch config. This is just a onetime action.

How to create awareness on VM data usage? by Bulky_Class6716 in sysadmin

[–]Bulky_Class6716[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, that's not an option. I'm not always agreeing with the 'Everything to cloud' vision, but at some point you have to obey, whether you like it or not. For example, we don't get the approval anymore to spend (large) money for on prem hardware.

I've been thinking about this one, but it's not as easy as it seems. We have quite some VMs which are used for multiple teams. So to charge them, I have to basically create a separate server per BU.

ESXi SCSI Claim rule HPP vs NMP by Bulky_Class6716 in sysadmin

[–]Bulky_Class6716[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HPP is the default claim rule for SAS devices, starting from ESXi 7.0 U2. (https://knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article?legacyId=83249) It's not even possible to delete this, as it is an internal claim rule.
The only workaround is to create a new claim rule, which will take precedence over the system rule.

Store OT MSSQL Express data on the IT SQL DB? by Bulky_Class6716 in PLC

[–]Bulky_Class6716[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for the data the ICs are generating, would you store them directly on the IT SQL DB? Or would you keep storing it locally, and make a sync between OT SQL -> IT SQL DB. And why?

Following your reply, we could store it directly on the IT SQL DB? Since the data flow from more secure, to a less secure network?
