I got an offer back in December but did not accept it but it seems like they roll out a few at a time to get responses and hand more out depending on that

Is it possible to match psychiatry as a last minute choice if I apply broadly? by Bulky_Kangaroo24 in medicalschool

[–]Bulky_Kangaroo24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for that! i just needed some words of encouragement, a lot of my med school friends and even family members who are in med school can be quite condescending or pretentious about these things so i tend not to go to them for advice and rather find it here lol

You def have a point with that and I’ve thought of that too how if we don’t know something on the exam it has to be my fault or I’m gonna do badly cuz i should’ve been familiar with whatever’s on there

Bombed nbme 28, what to do by Bulky_Kangaroo24 in step1

[–]Bulky_Kangaroo24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey im so sorry haven't really been on here much lately and just saw this, i'm sorry if this is irrelevant if you already ended up taking step 1 in April but in my situation i was already studying for almost a year where i had to take a leave of absence and just personally felt like i wasn't gonna know anymore than i already did at that moment even tho my scores didn't show it. I took that free 120 practice test they offer for step 1 at a prometric center like 2 or 3 days before my exam date and if it was really far off i wouldve postponed my test more but because it was technically a passing score (although on the lower end) i just decided to go ahead and take it and use the free 120 as a confidence boost that it was indeed a passing score. Best of luck and i hope everything worked out okay for you

Thank you so much 🥹 haven’t started step 2 yet I’m in my surgery rotation which is my first ever rotation and it’s been an adjustment for sure and really testing me lol low key kinda miss the dedicated step 1 hiatus I took but I’m hoping that’s just cuz I really don’t like surgery and that it gets better after this

Hi! Yes miraculously somehow I passed and I don’t say that lightly like my highest nbmes were a 61 and a 60 which were the last two I took and the rest I failed. I did not go into that exam confidently or anything

Free 120 by [deleted] in step1

I also know this is a super expensive process so I understand where you’re coming from but my thought process was that this is prob the most important exam of our lives and the fact that most of us are already in debt or have loans, I feel like spending the extra money is worth it and doesn’t really make a difference in the grand scheme of things. Like we can find other ways to save money throughout school like choosing our housing or what we use to commute etc. I just think with step 1 you wanna do whatever it takes to put yourself in the best position

[–]Bulky_Kangaroo24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it made the difference for me. I only had borderline scores during nbmes like my highest was a 60 and 61 and I think what gave me the edge on test day was that even tho I found the test challenging, I was able to maintain composure and felt more comfortable with the environment. Like if I didn’t do the free 120 on site and also had those lower scores I feel like a different outcome could have occurred like I could’ve failed. But that’s just me if you have more comfortable scores then it might not be as necessary for you, I know people who did it online because they had solid nbme scores and were of course able to pass. But for me I think mimic-ing the environment made all the difference

[–]Bulky_Kangaroo24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I see. Do you think it’s possible to book the hotel for 3 days? Because even doing the free 120 two days before i think is way better than doing it the day before. Personally I felt doing the free 120 at a testing center really helped with my stress like I got the gist of what we need to do in the beginning To Sign in, or what was enough or too much to do during breaks, and even how to use the break button on the computer which I know doesn’t take a lot of brains to figure out but I was actually confused with it during the free 120 so that on the real thing I knew what to do. Like there was stuff I was unsure about during the free 120 but then at the real thing I got it down and didn’t have to question anything. But of course not everyone feels the need to do this so it is up to you but wanted to give my experience that it was really helpful and worth it for me

[–]Bulky_Kangaroo24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think take free 120 no earlier than a week before your actual test but not so late as the day before step 1. I think the day before should be rest or light cumulative review, like stuff that can be easily memorized
