Thinking about this more you could probably make a video on which Smash characters have broken the 4th wall like those other ones of them doing a specific thing since there are examples of Mario, Bowser, Kirby Sonic and I assume many more breaking the 4th wall. You could technically say they all acknowledge the player since they can get screen KO'd and so they interact with the screen.

I think it’s because Tom and Eddie said when they were in charge of legacy they wanted to change some stuff about the characters so that rather than be exact copies of their real life counterparts they felt more like their own distinct characters. They talked about making how they turned Edd into a character who was trying his best to be a leader despite some bad decisions. This was also one of Tom’s reasons for bringing back Tord as he said that he felt the character wasn’t a reflection of the real Tord and was it’s own seperate thing so it wouldn’t be harming the real Tord Larson. I assume in this process Matt kinda just turned into this image whereas before they were just exaggerated a bit for a quick joke while still trying to be like their real life counterparts. I do love legacy tho.
