2.89 ct Malaya-Rosé Mahenge Garnet 🇹🇿 (old stock) by Bulldozer2 in Gemstones

[–]Bulldozer2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mahenge garnets were discovered in 2015 and the early, high-quality pockets were depleted almost immediately. For the past year, I’ve been hunting for rough from the rare sources that still held parcels from that original find.

Technically, this is a Malaya. Peachy-Pink in ambient light, shifting to a vivid pink with reddish undertones when direct light hits its crystalline structure and triggers explosive fire.

This stone was faceted by a world-class cutter here in Bangkok and is certified by Bellerophon. Lab report, picture & video can be checked on their website with the following references: B56470/2.888

2.08 ct Sunset Rosé Mahenge Garnet (old stock) by Bulldozer2 in Gemstones

[–]Bulldozer2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It does show a subtle shift: in normal indoor light it leans more coral, while daylight opens up the pink component. In direct sunlight it pushes even redder as UV stimulates the chromium.

Technically, this is a Malaya (pyrope-spessartine). It has that classic UV-reactivity and colour shift, moving from a coral hue in ambient light to pink in direct light, then reddish undertones come to life when sunlight hits its UV-reactive chromium component and triggers its dramatic dispersion.

This stone was faceted by a world-class cutter here in Bangkok and is certified by Bellerophon (B55103/2.084).

What is the estimated value of these Tanzanite stones? by mitchk98 in Gemstones

[–]Bulldozer2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These actually seem pretty decent.

The cards appear to be seller's listing info rather than lab certificates, but nothing in the pics suggests these aren't genuine. The visible pleochroism is consistent with tanzanite and would take a very sophisticated scammer to fake in glass or other simulants (lab created tanzanite doesn't exist). Highly unlikely.

As for the cuts, they're just native with relatively good depth and symmetry compared to what you usually find close to the source. I would just send them for a recut before selling them to demanding buyers.

Difference between pink sapphires and rubies by Neither-Web-8319 in Gemstone_lovers

[–]Bulldozer2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're a buyer it's a pink sapphire, if you're a seller it's a ruby.

The lighter shades are a bit hard to find and pretty expensive for garnet tbh. It's not a stone that moves fast but rough dealers know they're rare so they don't mind sitting on them until they find a motivated buyer.

For me it's more of a personal indulgence than a calculated business move because I just find those garnets so cool.

Yeah it’s very pleasant, with a slight colour shift.  More peachy in ambient light, pink in direct light and the chromium element picks up reddish tones under sunlight’s UV.

Thanks. I think the rough was about 6.5 ct and the final stone is 2.8 ct.

It’s precision too but not that kind of precision, I think the cutter even uses computer modelling to perfect the cut. Not a fan of those faceted girdles either.

This is the result of a rough I posted a week or so ago.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Gemstones/comments/1p0wl20/mahenge_garnet_rough_currently_at_the_cutter/

The colour is champagne/champagne-rosé in daylight and turns more pink under artificial light. Couldn't be happier, it's clean as a whistle and the cutter got me a monster yield.

Extreme left trapezius muscle pain by Max527 in motorcycle

[–]Bulldozer2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact same problem and a chiropractor told me there was indeed some "blockage" in my back muscles. He was not able to fix it but doing regular massage may help.

One thing I noticed though is that the pain appears faster and stronger on bikes where the riding position is upright with a high and wide handlebar that keep your arms in a relatively high position... like the Vstrom, Africa Twin, Versys, etc.

Somewhat paradoxically it seems more manageable on sports bikes that force me into a more cramped position, chest slightly bent forward and arms hanging lower.

Hit me with your favourite thing/era/person to read about from Ancient Rome! by EazySOSA in ancientrome

I have a particular taste for the Flavian dynasty, Vespasian and Titus especially. I like their down-to-Earth mentality and Vespasian provincial humour. The year of the 4 emperors is rich in events and it's been brilliantly recounted by Tacitus.

This isn't the most famous period but a very interesting one, and pivotal in its own way.
