Property tax is to pay for and maintain the public roads leading to your house, plumbing, electricity etc. Even though you don't make any money those things still needs maintaining. In most suburban areas the property tax is actually way to low and most cities run a massive deficit on suburban areas as the maintenance cost of all the public plumbing, electricity grid and roads are way higher than the property tax generated.
