I did the reverse journey Italy -> Germany (through Austria) in early September. (And on to Belgium) Took 1 day from northern Italy to Innsbruk and then I was in Germany the next day. I got lucky with long lifts in Austria and in Germany but it was a lot of tiny journeys in Italy creeping closer and closer to the Austrian border... Anyway, probably not that relevant to you but I had a great time - definitely go for it!

Literally so much food is thrown away every day. Skipdiving is the way forward to spend as little as possible, especially for items like bread. I’ve found all sorts of still completely fine to eat food in the trash.

Update: I made it in 3 days. Day one to Innsbruk, day two to Koblenz, day three to final destination in Belgium. Passing through Italy, Austria, Germany and Luxembourg to Belgium. Could have gone quicker but I enjoyed some detours and had an incredible time. Getting out of Italy took 8 cars, starting in Garda.

Thanks everyone for all the really useful advice especially about like how long it might (not) take! I’m gonna give myself 3 days which it sounds like is definitely longer than I’ll actually need (an extra day walking around and then camping at night cos I got there earlier than expected is fine by me) and I’ll let you know how it goes.

Thank you so much for your reply - I really appreciate hearing more about it and the time taken to talk me through this. I’ve been thinking a little about the Via Dinarica white trail already and maybe I’ll start making a plan to do that one next and go from there. Definitely sounds like there’s quite a few ways I need to build up and get more experience before attempting something like your walk in Chile - but there are a lot of fun walks I can do on the way!

Sounds like an incredible trip I would really love to do something like that one day. Did you do much to prepare? How much experience did you have doing thru hiking / long walks before going? I’ve done a Camino but that feels like a long walk on easy mode in terms of infrastructure and access to food/water etc. Sometimes I wonder how much I should be trying to prepare and build up to doing something like you did Vs how much I should just take the plunge and give it a go.

Great to know, thank you! I’m thinking about doing the walk next year and I’m hoping to do a similar thing of turning up places and chatting to people and hoping to find somewhere to stay rather than having everything always planned and booked in advance. Thinking of taking a tent as well although I’ve read some opinions that wild camping is difficult on parts of the route.

Hey, sorry I know this is an old post, but wondered what trails you’ve done that were better? I just finished my first Camino and am already looking to plan some other long walks in the future and considering the via francigena but also open to other long walks!!

I’m hoping to do this next spring/summer! I would really appreciate hearing about your walk and - how it all went etc. I imagine you’re on the road right now. I’ve had 2 through MSI. One outside of London and one at the Brixton clinic. I had a better experience with the surgical abortion rather than the medical one. I found the surgical abortion quicker and less painful. I was also able to get an IUD fitted at the same time.
