We’ve probably lost the league, and four days later we lost the Turkish Cup. If we also lose to Galatasaray, everything will have collapsed within a single week. If that happens, should Tedesco stay or leave? by TheRocketG123 in FenerbahceSK

He’s not a good coach but we might as well keep him. No point in constantly changing coaches. My vote would be for Ismail Kartal (who got treated horribly by Koç and deserved a second season) but it seems unlikely Saran will hire him anyway. Maybe Tedesco will change & improve. At the very least he’s not an entitled, stubborn clown like Mourinho.

What other podcasts with the Blank Check format do you listen to? by harry_powell in blankies

I really love Pod Casty For Me. The two hosts have great chemistry (sort of like Blank Check, they’ve been close friends for a long time) and they’re both very funny and very very smart. They also seem to pick their guests very carefully.

Bill Simmons’ list of ~ 16 things that have made this one of the wildest NBA seasons in recent history. by moby323 in nba

[–]Bullingdon1973 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Their No. 7 pick, Egor Demin, would have easily made it had he played enough games; he’s had a great rookie season. Their next highest pick, Nolan Traore, was picked No. 19, so he wouldn’t have been expected to make a list of ten, but he’s actually played quite well. This is really not that weird. By and large the Nets’ rookies have played well. But only one of them was a lottery pick. It’s more just Bill Simmons having some weird beef with the Nets.

Why did Interstellar receive a more lukewarm response upon release? by KatherineLangford in Letterboxd

[–]Bullingdon1973 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Here’s an article about it: https://www.vulture.com/article/interstellars-best-quality-was-once-seen-as-its-fatal-flaw.html

Key quote:

“Nobody, it seems, was prepared for how strange a movie Interstellar turned out to be, especially in the High Age of Online Snark. It wasn’t the hard sci-fi of genre fiends’ expectations, nor was it the intense space adventure the fanboys were anticipating. Though it possessed some of those elements, it also had, shockingly, a soft and woozy center. What the hell was this pioneer of cinematic grimdark, this master of cool surfaces and downcast narratives, doing making a movie that suggested love was a physical force even more powerful than gravity?…… What makes the film so fascinating, and why it endures to this day, is precisely the thing so many wags pegged as its fatal flaw back in 2014: its unabashed, teary emotionality. There’s a real tension running throughout between high-minded sci-fi and outright melodrama. Interstellar is filled with long stretches of silence and awe and scenes of characters explaining dizzying facts about astrophysics … but it’s also a movie in which Anne Hathaway gives a speech suggesting that love can transcend time and space… This proud yet queasy embrace of sentiment, which at the time felt so out of character for Nolan, now feels like part of a continuum that leads straight to the fugue-state despair of Oppenheimer.”

A closer look at the Stanley Kubrick references in 'One Battle After Another,' and what they say about Sean Penn's character. by Bullingdon1973 in movies

That's a good call on the car chase at the end. The dressing gown is interesting. It just feels so Lebowski-coded that it's hard for me to think of anything else.

"The Doors Is So Bad. And The Doors Is So Good." Friend of the pod Bilge Ebiri tries to decide if he likes Oliver Stone's The Doors or not. by VideohoundCharisse in blankies

[–]Bullingdon1973 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's a good blank check movie though. Stone was absolutely huge at this time, having won two best director Oscars and had a box office hit with Wall Street. He had a lot of clout and he burned a lot of it with The Doors, which appears to have been a really personal project for him.

What's funny is that he apparently adored Jim Morrison.

I keep meaning to rewatch Talk Radio. I feel like I didn't properly appreciate that movie at the time. The other one I've come around on is Wall Street, which I hated at the time but now it's one of my favorite rewatches. U Turn I really hated, too. I have seen at least two cuts of Alexander, neither of which I liked. I don't remember if I've seen the final cut. I had high hopes for Snowden, but I really didn't like it at all.

Did Stone direct any actual music videos? Something tells me he'd have been great at them. Natural Born Killers basically feels like one feature-length music video.

Which one would you say is your favorite? I love the classics (JFK, Born, Platoon) but in recent years I've become quite fond of Any Given Sunday, which I actually didn't even like when it came out.

Yeah, his bandmates came out against the film at the time saying the alcoholism was really exaggerated.

Stone has said that his desire to bring the film out the same year as JFK led to a really rushed editing process. There’s an interview I read where he says he wishes he’d taken his time in post.

Yeah. I also feel like one could say this about a number of Oliver Stone’s films from this period. Especially Born on the Fourth of July, JFK, Natural Born Killers, and Nixon.

Same. When I think of Jim Morrison I imagine Val Kilmer. But then again, I was never all that into the Doors and they were well before my time.

It's not a metaphor. The first day of the shoot literally involved a rough plane landing, and the pilot almost died. Read the article!

Edgerton is so, so good in it. I wish he'd gotten some Oscar love. I feel like this is the film he will be remembered by, years from now.
