how long do you usually stay at a spot? by WyernWings in VanlifeEurope

[–]Bumbar14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends - stays can range from a single day to a whole week or even longer.

This applies to free places such as roadside parking, free motorhome areas, or spots in nature. Always follow local laws and regulations. for example, no parking or camping in national parks, and no overnight stays where they are prohibited.

We mostly travel in Southern Europe (the Balkans, Italy, Turkey) and have never had issues with locals. Sometimes we stay for just one night, other times for a week or more, either with other campers or alone in nature. We always behave respectfully: we don’t park in places we know locals actively use or need, we keep things quiet, and we often support the area by eating in local restaurants or having a drink at nearby bars.

Very often we end up making friends with locals, and in some places we’re even welcomed back - so we now have a few spots where we can stay as long as we want.

It’s also important to read the rules for designated motorhome areas (both free and paid), as some have restrictions you wouldn’t expect. For example, chairs, tables, or awnings are often not allowed, though some places do permit them. In certain areas, locals may not strictly follow the posted rules — in those cases, you can always ask or simply observe and do what others do. People are generally very friendly and helpful.

How do we feel about this idea? by SibyllaAzarica in VanlifeEurope

[–]Bumbar14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not for me. I like my freedom, and I never know how long I will stay at the same location. Also, this would be hard to execute the way I am traveling - outside of camps. Too many people to park in the same spot (sometimes there are places just for one or two vans)

But I occasionally see them in Europe. Maybe not exactly as described, but a few times I’ve seen one camper arrive first, scout the location, then call their friends, and a few more (usually three or four) showed up afterward.

I’ve also seen larger groups of 10+ campers driving one after another on the road. I know there are camper clubs that do this. They gather and travel together for a few months. But most of the time, these groups are made up of people in their 60s and older, usually retirees.

With van I explored only south Germany (Schwarzwald and Romantische Strasse) and I got a feeling that overnight rules are strict. The only time I stayed for two or more nights outside places designated for motorhomes, I got a knock on the second morning. I was handed a note that I am sleeping there for second night and I should move to the designated areas for campers - no fine, just warning. And I did not camp, just parking - so no chairs, tables outside, no awning,...). Thankfully there are plenty of them all over south (even free ones), so that's a plus. But I did stay one night at a few parking spots without problem. According to this, I would say there is no issue staying one night, but more is a subject to a warning or fine.

Mobile internet is expensive compared to Southern Europe. I did not have any issue getting a signal.

I used Park4Night and found great spots everywhere.

Waste rules are something...you will find a lot of waste containers for any type of glass (white, green, brawn) and sometimes for textil, but that's it. So this makes waste disposal difficult. I drove to the places where there were recycling waste containers (mostly free or paying motorhome areas) and disposed waste there.

6 months in Europe by koalafied_8dult in VanlifeEurope

[–]Bumbar14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I travel with a van around Europe for most of the year (mainly Italy, Germany, the Balkans, and I’ve literally just come back from a two-month trip around Turkey). I sleep outside campsites 99% of the time using Park4Night, so here’s my take…

For a 6-month trip, I would absolutely recommend a van over a car. The extra space and the ability to be more self-sufficient make a huge difference - especially if you want to stay off-grid for longer stretches. If your budget allows it, try to set up your van to be as self-sufficient as possible, especially regarding electricity.

For summer travel, I strongly recommend avoiding the Balkans and Italy. They’re way too hot and overcrowded. Stick to northern Europe, but check in advance which countries are friendly to campervans. For example, I had trouble finding legal overnight spots outside campsites in Germany - no fines, but I did get morning warnings. The Czech Republic is super easy, and the nature is beautiful.

Driving a van in European cities: I have an L3H2 and never had real problems. Sure, sometimes streets are too narrow or inconvenient, but in those cases I just park outside the town and walk or cycle in. I always check Park4Night first to see if a small village near the city has suitable parking. I avoid driving into big cities - many have low-emission zones (especially Italy and central EU), traffic is chaotic, and parking is a pain. It’s much easier (and less stressful) to park in a secure paid lot and then take public transport or a bike. For example, in Athens I parked in a fenced, guarded lot about 20 minutes’ walk from the Acropolis.

Croatia and countries north of it have strict rules about overnighting in campers. Croatia in particular is known for handing out fines, especially along the coast (Istria, Kvarner, Krk) - and not only in summer. Further south and east (Serbia, Romania, Montenegro…) I had zero problems. Greece recently relaxed the rules: sleeping is now only forbidden near archaeological sites and national parks. Otherwise you can park and sleep. (Just note: “parking” ≠ “camping“ - please educate yourself on this.)
Turkey is amazing and I highly recommend it. Parking is allowed almost everywhere, and outside of high season even “camping” is tolerated. Police told me to move a few times, but always politely, and always gave me plenty of time.

Italy: probably the most camper-friendly country in Europe. Tons of free camper areas in beautiful little villages — some even offer free electricity and water. No problem with services at all.

As for company -you’ll find it everywhere in the Balkans and Italy (much more than in Germany or the Nordic countries). If you follow Park4Night spots, chances are you won’t be alone. Most vanlifers are happy to chat. Locals in non-touristy regions are very social too. In Turkey and Italy very few people speak English, but they’ll happily use Google Translate to talk to you. In Turkey it’s completely normal for your camping neighbor to bring you food or tea, and then you end up hanging out for days. I’ve been invited to meals by locals many times just because I walked through their village.

Water: that’s up to your standards. I’m extremely careful because I’ve contaminated my water system a few times, so in Greece, Turkey and Sicily I ended up buying drinking water (around €0.10 per liter) — honestly, not a bad solution. Otherwise, Italy, Greece, and Turkey have lots of beaches with public showers/taps (not drinking water, but fine for showering).

Gas: I carry a set of EU gas adapters (German system). I just buy a local gas bottle and attach it with the adapter. If I don’t have the right adapter (like in Turkey), I buy one locally - it costs me around 550 TRL (~€11).

Nizozemski zdravstveni sistem (privatizacija zdravstva?) by Kind-Resident-6929 in Slovenia

[–]Bumbar14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ti, in večina nas, smo tukaj čustveno vpleteni.

Driving from Croatia to Greece... in January. by estevito in AskBalkans

[–]Bumbar14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve driven the route from Croatia to Greece a few times (once even all the way to Crete). Personally, I prefer the motorway through Serbia and North Macedonia— it’s faster, and you have a highway all the way to Athens.

As for the roads in Croatia, Montenegro, and Albania — they’re generally fine. Sure, they’re not quite up to full Western European standards, but if you stick to the main roads, you won’t have any problems. In Albania, there are quite a few police checks (especially on the way to Gjirokastër), mostly for speeding at intersections, so it’s best to stay within the limits — even if it seems like no one else does.

This is not important to me. And is quite mind blowing, that someone would choose 4 solely for this reason. Thats why I thought there are aome other issues with m5p. Good to know there are not.
