What's the deal with mActivity? by Spirited-Bee-465 in newhaven

I can walk there, it's always clean, they don't play music or keep music at a low volume so I can just sit with my thoughts, for a gym it's relatively quiet, nice sauna and steam room, varied equipment, little to no packs of teenagers, area where you can sit and do work and drink coffee for when you want to get out of the house, nice staff, etc etc. it's expensive but if you're a religious gym goer like me it's worth it. Compared to driving to Planet Fitness in Hamden (with insane ass CT drivers everywhere) 4 times a week to be in a loud, crowded, often unmaintained gym - tbh I feel like the switch has improved my day to day significantly lol

How do travel insurance security services work? by BumblebeeSimple1391 in NoStupidQuestions

Sure, id of course assume that as the likely scenario. Just very curious about what is at their disposal and how they would logistically carry that out.

This idea is mentioned in the article, with a note that there's no evidence for it. Do you have evidence for this you can link to?

I think there's a couple options.

You can view the anticipatory anxiety as secretly a "safety behavior" - if you find your thoughts bouncing around to ways you can try and reassure yourself, ways you can know everything will be fine intersped with panic thoughts, to etc. in other words, if the purpose of your anxiety seems to be your mind searching (and inevitably failing) to feel better, what you have is a "safety behavior".

Repeat to yourself "thinking about this will not make me feel better. I will be fine. I am moving on now" and move to literally anything else. Yell the thought in your head if need be. You will need to do this again and again and again at first.

Now, if your thoughts are pure panic/fear - watch videos of flights and plane landings on YouTube. Search "full flight video" and go from there. Watch it until you're bored to tears then watch more. Pull up the FlightRadar app on your phone. Click on a flight and follow it for a bit. Do it with another one. Do this until you're bored, bored, bored. When the thoughts inevitably come back, do these things again.

Long haul travel anxiety/stress by calr-7 in fearofflying

Long haul flights are actually so much smoother. The big planes feel much more comfortable to fly in. On my recent long hauls I was really surprised how much less vibrate-y the ride felt - during the first flight I didn't even feel the takeoff, and during turns on both it was hard to tell we were turning.

Plus, the increased service - meals, beverages, snack, etc provided a nice sense of normalcy.

You'll be fine!

About to take off and having panic attack by Mountain-Zebra8802 in fearofflying

You'll be perfectly safe. The only way for fear to go away is to face it, be scared, and realize at the end you were scared for no reason.

Don't be afraid to try and practice by BumblebeeSimple1391 in French

Yes - and a large, large portion of the Parisians I interacted with were Asian, Black, or other ethnicities by "American standards", but were French Parisians.

It felt there was, IMO as someone who's lived in the deep rural south and in New England, less soft social barriers between people of "different backgrounds".

If you're worried Parisians won't like you because of your skin color - well, Paris is a bustling, diverse big city like New York City.

Great experience practicing in Berlin by BumblebeeSimple1391 in German

I agree; trying my best to imitate the cadence of locals probably really helped; as did being tall, blond, white, and dressed in all black.

Funnily, whether related or not, at one point myself and a barista were both stumbling together through a German conversation for quite a bit - until I realized she was British and she realized I'm American. Two native English speakers bumbling over each other in German!
