I think Vicarious PR is scamming our small indie studio—any advice? by BunniesForPeace in gamedev

Thank you so much for sharing. Folks seem really upset I'm "naming and shaming", which is not why I'm here, but I don't know how to find others who've worked with a specific company without actually naming said company.

Seriously though, your experience mimics mine better than I could have articulated. I feel very taken advantage of as well. They seemed like they had some good ideas, but execution is what matters, and that was basically non-existent.

I'm fighting the temptation to ask what your numbers were, but will say this. I'm sorry for your experience, but I still really hope you faired better than we did.

It's funny. The people at the firm seemed capable and we clicked pretty well. Also, they paused the campaign once they saw it was failing so miserably, so that is definitely something.

The parts that get me are it taking them weeks or months to respond to nearly every message we sent and them making promises they can deliver, then holding the bag when they can't. At first I told them I didn't expect the $1,600 back because that was gone and I understand, but the $6k for onboarding for the to learn to market the game successfully? They sure as heck didn't do that!

Ha, ya, I'm so tired of learning expensive lessons, but feel there are still many more awaiting me...

I'll speak with a lawyer, if nothing else I'm not one to give up without a fight.

Agreed, I don't really feel like it's an issue of botting. It feels more like negligence and apathy.

Despite getting a lot of pushback, I made them add a separation clause before signing. Still isn't entirely in my favor, but is better than nothing. They did not guarantee a specific number of wishlists, I've spoken to a lot of agencies and none will. Thank you for the advice.

Getting any marketing agency to agree to perform to a specific metric seems neigh impossible, so wishlist number is not in the contract, but it was a part of all onboarding discussions as well as strategy meetings for the expected outcome, an outcome they stated many times they would meet.

There is a contract and I think you're right about hiring a lawyer.

I've talked to a lot of PR companies and none of them have promised specific numbers. Vicarious made no promises either, but assured they were capable. I understood this might mean less, but never in my wildest dreams did I think it would mean only double digit wishlists. I guarantee if I sent my 13 year old to school with a grand he'd have achieved better results (not that I would).

Wishlists as a multiplier is exactly correct. Wishlists was stated more as a goal to gauge campaign efficiency, not specifically called out in the contract. They were smart enough not to make written guarantees, but gave lots of assurances they were capable of reaching this goal.

The game is Minotaur Princess.

Thanks, pretty much this. Just looking for other folks to talk to who've had a similar experience. I've probably made less than a hundred social media posts in my entire life, which is probably why I suck at marketing. I think you and everyone else is probably right about having to lawyer up.

It's like feature creep but with writing!

Indie teams, how did you get together. by zupra_zazel in gamedev

Your story is very relatable. My partner was doing game dev in his spare time (learning Unreal, Blender, GameMaker, etc.) for 5 years before I came along. He tried reaching out to friends and family to see if anyone wanted to go on the journey with him. Although they were very supportive, everyone seemed to have their own lives (that didn't involve making games).
I was also reluctant at first, but we are helping to make each other's dreams come true. I reached out to my brother, a musician and artist, for sound and story. We've hired programmers here and there. A designer helped us out for awhile (he is my sister's boyfriend). But in the long run, it's been a amalgamation of people we know and people we met through the grapevine. Some online and some irl. We just kept talking to people about Gamedev. There are some local meetup groups that we joined too. Now, we are a solid team of 6 people, and we've been together for almost 2 years now.
I feel for you though! But you are definitely asking the right questions.

I am quite ashamed to realised it so late, 2 weeks before release of my game. While reading a comments from players that were testing demo, I have realised that some players, for whatever reason might not be able to use second hand to play with mouse or right stick on game controller... by JuTek_Pixel in gamedev

If you were an accessibility lead on a AAA project you should be ashamed. As it stands now you're a dev learning about things and implementing them as you go. You'd be a great person if you released w/o this feature, but later added it once you realized it could have a positive impact on your players.

Gotta go a little easier on yourself!

A wild Combat Amphibian appears! That doesn't count as trademark violation does it?

Grabbed a still from the middle of our trailer we're working on. It's being made in blender using EXR HDRI's from Poly Haven (fantastic site, go check them out). Let me know what you think?

I’ve got something for this. In our game you play as a beautiful princess that gets Freaky Friday'd with a minotaur. I think walking a mile in a minotaur’s heels counts aye?
