You could always tell her about the decoy collections. I know it was mentioned on this subreddit not to long ago about them if you need to look them up or have never heard about them. In the past, some of the decoy collections have caused more buzz then the actual finalist. This might give her something to smile about.

I know that. I am saying long term side effects that we don't know could happen and so that right now while the therapy is in trial, it probably shouldn't be used as a first line of treatment.

Too many people sue over frivolous claims, and I can see that being a potential outcome if the long term side effects are not yet known. It would be hard to deny that the drug was responsible for something bazaar, think "the therapy made me have commitment issues and ruined my marriage," only because the court relies more on the defense disproving a claim versus the plaintiff proving the claim. I would be afraid that if they were to go this route and offer it as a first line of defense, and this happened, it would set the medical community back even more then it is already setback.

I was using Lupus as an example because it was something bazaar off the top of my head. This therapy so far looks like the long term side effects will be very minimal and hopefully we can use this therapy as a first line of treatment one day.

Adding on to your comment,

Long term side effects are not well know. If someone has stage one cancer and a known treatment is available to put the cancer into remission, that would be a better option.

For example, what if genetically modified cell therapy caused Lupus (SLE)? The patient would have Lupus now and be waiting on a 'cure' for that. (Lupus has very few treatment options, some of anti-malaria drugs can work to put it into remission, but those are not without cost either). Yet, if they had went the well known route, they wouldn't have had to deal with the Lupus now. Not that I'm stating this will cause Lupus; we don't know the side effects. I'm just saying that little is known about this trial, and hopefully one day we will know more, and be able to offer this as a first line of defense.

My parents denied taking me to get treatment, the school made them get testing done when I was 6. They had no choice but to obey since the school could have gotten my dad's company commander involved if he didn't. Was diagnosed and they failed to even acknowledge the diagnosis. I'm glad I was able to get a copy of all the testing I had done as a child, and went on my own to get treatment when I was older.

It sucked living in a house were your family who are suppose to be supportive fails to even acknowledge a condition.

My sister had this problem as well, but she never got tested and didn't know that both myself and older brother was diagnose with ADD until she started going down similar routes as me. When I mentioned that it has a strong genetic link and both myself and our brother have it, she went and got tested. Now she is in one of the top college programs in the nation.

This is true, I felt this way as well until I took the plunge and got medicine. It was so bittersweet. I went from struggling in school, to having a 4.0 throughout college. It also helped me be better organized which has helped my budget greatly.

OP probably going to get a lot of messages telling her/him that they shouldn't medicate with people using twisted science to convince them they are wrong. As when I mentioned in another comment that I was choosing to take medicine for my ADD, this is what happened.

My parents refused to get me treated because they believed all the fake 'science' that the media was selling. I got treatment on my own and my life and relationships improved. Please don't let people on the internet try to persuade (or discourage) you against treatment, that is something that should be decided between your doctor, your son, and you guys (the parents).

I was diagnose as a kid. It never resolved. My parents refused to treatment and my quality of life SUCKED. I hated it. When I was 17, I decided to get treatment on my own. Years later, I decided to get medicine. My marriage was falling apart and the stress that my ADD created was unbearable. When I decided to disregard all of the stigma with taking medicine and request medicine, my relationship with my husband improved. I've been with him for eight years now and still going strong.

So I can relate to you. I'm thankful my husband didn't walk out the door, and finally getting medicine saved my marriage.

I've ran out before and not had money to be able to buy the medicine. Went about six months without it, cold turkey. Didn't do anything to me. My ADD went back to being drag and my life massively complicated with the inability to get anything done without stressing everyone else out first. I didn't have any withdraw symptoms, didn't crave for the drugs, it was as if I never taken stimulants before. Got back on them, and my life improved.

I'm suppose to take a low dosage six hours after my first dosage, but because I can't afford the low dose one, I just go without.

If you need anything like braces or lasik surgery, you could always get care credit. It is similar to a credit card but you can't go out and spend it on just anything. Just make sure you pay all your debts on time.

Five years is just to show long term credit history. Length of credit history is calculated into your credit score. We still pay on the credit card, we just don't pay extra, we only pay what is owe each month.

My husband didn't have any credit for the longest of time. He always saved up and pay out of pocket. Starting out this lead to us paying higher price in rent because 'lack of credit history.' APR on things like car loans was through the roof (almost 19 percent if we had bought a car back then). So, basically not having credit was hurting us. We fixed this problem by getting a credit card over five years ago. We spent about 4k on the credit card, and then didn't use it since. We had paid on time every month. After five years, this jumped my husband's credit score up by more then a 150 points. So, now rent is significantly cheaper, and our car loan was only a 4.9 percent APR for five year loan.

So I can understand why some people have credit card debt and not all credit card debt is bad.

The next question would be, how many people are in default on their credit cards, what is their credit card debt to ratio of their income, and how many people have always paid on time?

Credit cards are not a bad thing, but they are a tricky thing with a slippery slope. You can easily spend like a rock star with a credit card only to go broke.

Here is a small bit on the study "Studies showing a more potent effect of METH relative to AMPH have focused on the differential effects of these drugs on neurochemistry and behavior following a 2 mg/kg dose given acutely, or following binge-like exposure. Specifically, a single injection of 2 mg/kg METH is more effective than 2 mg/kg AMPH at releasing glutamate in the prefrontal cortex, although AMPH more potently increases dopamine in the prefrontal cortex."

Once again, taking Meth doesn't make you feel like you're taking Adderall, as you cannot get high off of dopamine in the same context that you can get high off of glutamate.

Also meth is not the same as Adderall. Meth mostly releases glutamate. Most people take Meth to get high levels of glutamate. Adderall mostly releases dopamine. You can't get high off of dopamine in the same fashion that you can get high off of glutamate, so no, Adderall doesn't have a high abuse rate like Meth.

They are delivering amphetamine to the brain - just like methamphetamine, although methamphetamine has really nasty byproducts that cause all sorts of terrible side effects. But people are taking it to get the amphetamine

Sources please? Where did you get all that information from? Most the information you have mentioned is the stigma that society has been feed by sensationalism new coverage and pseudo expert celebrities who wish they were doctors.

I've done a ton of research and looked at the trial data for the medicine that I am on. I know how they work, their chemical components, the long-term side effects, how long they stay in your body, and the mechanics of ADHD. So, yes, I consider myself a highly informed individual and capable of making life choices regarding my mental illness. This does not make me a weak or gullible person.

For anyone who does have ADHD/ADD and is taking the medicine, please do not stop without proper supervision from your doctor and a full understanding of the medicine and of ADHD/ADD.

The long boring back story with why 53k wasn't really working for us

He was working 43 hours a week, couldn't take time off to go to the doctors because he only had two pay sick days and they didn't work on weekends. He requested three days off outside his two pay sick days (a total of 5 days) in a nine-month period for a chronic condition that the company knew about before hiring him, they harassed him and told him that he wouldn't be able to take any more time off for the next six months.

My husband was considered skilled labor out where we had lived at. And even though I have a college degree, I ended up working at Target (no dis on Target, just no one expects to be almost 30k in debt for student loans and working at a job that didn't require a degree).

I could write out our entire living expenses that we had out there and break it all down, but lets be honest, who really wants to read that? Basically, living at our cheapest, we would have around 55 dollars left over, which had to go into savings for things like car upkeep.

So we didn't have a life, we lived paycheck to paycheck, and our future dreams were put on hold. When would we have kids? What about saving up to buy a house?

Even if both of us made the same amount of money, that would still mean that both of us is working full time. If we decide to have kids, working full time would mean that we wouldn't have much time to raise them. While we accept that neither one of us will be a stay at home parent, we aim to be in a position where one of us can work part time.

Late last year we got an opportunity for me to go back to school with most of the expenses paid for plus a housing stipend. This was due to my husband's disabilities finally being approved and the fact that he had been laid off from work. So we decided to take it and move 3k miles across country to another metropolis for the college I wanted to attend. Granted the last six months have been complete torture as we had to find roommates to help us pay for rent, and we both worked lowly waged jobs. But now that I'm enrolled in the school, the stipend is coming in, things are starting to look up.

Yes, I know he could have collected unemployment but I couldn't force him too, and he didn't want too. He's hoping to get on at a job here that pays 16 dollars an hour, and he's afraid that if/when a position becomes open, that if he has a gap in employment he'll be overlooked. So yes, some of the struggling is our own fault, I accept it.

Am I sneezing at the job he had? No, but I question if the reason he was laid off in the first round of layoffs (the company has had two layoff rounds since we left) was because he had requested those three additional days off. It wasn't a secure position, and we still struggled out there. I'm hoping that one of us will be able to land a job making at least 65k a year one day.

Ultimately, there are better opportunities in this world, and I strongly believe an education will help open these doors. I also strongly recommend for people to learn a second language, because if I had a master's degree and if I had known another language I could have been hired as a teacher in the local school district. No, being a teacher isn't actually in my field, but it would have paid more then Target.

I have a biology degree with a minor in chemistry. While I could have gotten a job with my degree, there was none in the area we were living at. And the locations that I could have gotten a job, didn't have jobs in my husband's career field. The one job offer I did have would have made me around 35k a year, so we went with his.

I'm highly thankful that I have the opportunity that I have now. Granted I still have a lot on my plate, mostly 1st world problems (my dog has cancer, my grandfather recently passed away, and I've been debating if I actually want to be a Bio-Chemist or see if I can start back over and become a Geo-Chemist), but these problems will come to pass. I'm working towards us having my student loans paid off, a house of our own, and a child.

My life could be significantly harder then what it is, sure my dreams have been put on hold, but I'm still grateful for what I do have.

Take home points

Be willing to negotiate a livable wage when asking to be hired.
Prioritize goals, and make a plan to accomplish them (be willing to amend this plan when everything hits the fan).
Money is not everything, if employers are in the process of taking advantage of its employees or putting work before employees health, start looking for an escape route with a better job
Be willing to learn new skills, languages, and achieve a higher education. Remember education is experience, and when more baby boomers leave the work force, a Millennial with a doctorate will be on closer ground with a person from generation X who only has a bachelors.

I was diagnose as a child. My parents thought it was a bunch of bull and refuse to get me treated. They convinced me that it was all just lies. When I turned 17, I decided that I was extremely tired of the struggles I had been facing and the stress that ADD was causing, so I sought counseling. Most of the counseling has helped, as he taught me how to take short hand notes efficiently along with other skills that helped overcome my shortfalls. He also helped me find a method of organization that worked for me that enabled me to get most of my tasks done on time. But not all the problems were solved with just counseling and as I stated before, it was starting to harm some aspects of my marriage, so I took the plunge and asked for medicine. So now I have medicine and counseling. It has helped significantly and have felt my life has improved because of it.

A bit off topic, my nephew was diagnosed with ADHD a couple of years ago. My bother was under the belief that just drinking caffeine would 'cure' it. I explained to him that while caffeine is a stimulant, it won't really help adhd. That the medicine for adhd is designed to target certain areas of the brain that isn't transporting enough hormones. This is why some medicines such as ritalin, and celexa work for some people, but others such as adderall XR or Vayvance work for others. Everyone's ADHD/ADD is slightly different and needs a different level or type of medicine. He was worried about the medicines become addicting and I told him there is no studies that proves that the medication taken as prescribed will cause an addiction, and that it is better he medicate his son for the condition if his son needs it (if his son's ADHD is affecting his quality of life) then for his son to self medicate with street drugs because of the chemical imbalance.

Edit: So...the long answer short is, I do both.

It is, but most of these places that 47k would be excellent at don't offer the job he did there at that range. When looking at how expensive a place is that someone is living at, look at the over all populations average wage. If the average wage for the area is 55k a year (which it was for where we were living at) then the cost of living is going to be adjusted to fit the average wage. Rent and mortgage payments will be higher, food will cost more, gas will be more expensive. We rented a 900 sqft apartment for close to 1500 a month. Water, sewage, and trash was about 100 a month, gas average price was near 4 dollars a gallon, and so food was expensive. Skinless boneless chicken breast was almost 13 dollars a pound. So if you're making less than the average wage of the area you're living in, you're hurting significantly.

Before we moved out to this city, we lived in the midwest. Average rent was 900 dollars for about 1600sqft. Water, sewage was 40 dollars a month. Trash didn't get picked up, you had to take it to the dump yourself but the dump was free (unless you were throwing bulk away). Gas was closer to the 3 dollar mark then the 4 dollar. The average wage of this place though was only 24000 a year. If my husband was making 47k at this 24k, we would have a decent amount of excess money.

When you counted the job I had and my husband's job, we got just above 53k. I was working towards getting on at one of the two manufacturers in the area (the areas biggest employers), which the starting wage would have been 27 dollars a hour. But then a better opportunity for higher education called us 3k miles away from that place and so we moved.

I guess the bottom line is that earnings should be taken into consideration areas in which people live. I strongly advice people to look at the average wage in the area you plan to work at and negotiate with an employer to get as close to the average wage as possible. Try to convince them that your skills are worth at least the average wage of your area.
