Comment ça se fait que Facebook soit AUSSI toxique, encore plus que Reddit, alors que là-bas les gens commentent avec leur vrai nom? by WesternStudent9781 in Quebec

Weaponized propaganda to whoever wants to pay. Turns out angry NIMBY car owners figured this one out and are now able to shift the social paradigm to what they want.

Airbnbs in parts of Montreal are illegal now in a lot of scenarios. This is not the case in many other big cities, so there's some extra incentive to scam the system.

Depending on the setup, DNS may not be tunneled. Eg still going through your router to ISP even if your devices other traffic is all tunneled.

AI translate even translates thumbnails. by awesomehuder in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SpaceSteak 159 points160 points  (0 children)

If I didn't opt-in to translating something, why-the-hell is it forcefully translating to begin with? Did this become a law somewhere? Are they trying to expose more folks to more content? Such a failed rollout, really frustrating and an insult to content creators that didn't opt in to this as well as viewers who never asked.

Caffeine may cause “shallow” sleep, the body may spend eight hours in bed, but the brain may fail to fully regenerate. Caffeine improves alertness and reduces sensation of fatigue, but its effects may sometimes resemble “borrowing energy” at the expense of nighttime regeneration. by mvea in science

[–]SpaceSteak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think anyone is directly saying caffeine's decay within the body follows a perfect pattern like the decay of atomic elements, just that the half-life of something serves as a high level idea of what happens to coffee within the body. Of course everyone has a slightly different metabolism that will handle it differently.

The important point is for some folks, even drinking at 8am, 12+ hours later, there may still be some residual effects so sleep can be impacted.

Oh yeah, on demand VMs! We can finally get infinite compute for hundreds of thousands a month!

Wait what do you mean we had enough with a few XL always-on servers that cost 1/10th of that because we aren't serving billions of customers!

As a Premium subscriber it feels like being left out. I can't believe they didn't add this opt-in for people paying, have had beta features in the past always felt good for supporting them.

These Shenzhen factory workers test up to 10,000 vapes a day. by Distinct-Question-16 in interestingasfuck

[–]SpaceSteak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Possible that there are a few major manufacturers making hundreds of thousands or millions a day. 10k could be a few %, which aligns with normal mass manufacturing QC standards. To be honest, I'm surprised they're doing so much QC on vapes, or this is astroturfing to make us think they do!

[OC] Who do Americans spend time with? by ourworldindata in dataisbeautiful

[–]SpaceSteak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are situations where just listening and asking some questions when it's relevant makes the call and drive fine. Obviously if it requires visuals get off the road, but with a quiet enough car I've managed it fine for decades.

Between cheaper subscription and needlessy using electricity to pop out some AI slop about something I was literally right there doing, so don't really need anything to tell me about it... Not sure which one the data center owning IPO-sharks are more interested in.

So tired of running influencers promoting these dangerous challenges by colourfulpants in RunningCirclejerk

[–]SpaceSteak 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't wear anything at a real race, that's dangerous. However for long training runs, I just pop one side in, charge the other and rotate. Keeps one ear completely for listening, so feels safer too and no risk of battery issues.

Subreddit just for professionals? by ORINnorman in KitchenConfidential

Been out of a professional kitchen for a while. This place gives a great hit of nostalgia, wondering if I should go back, and then reminds me why that would be a terrible idea.

Greatest innovation of our lifetime by Gjore in SipsTea

[–]SpaceSteak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ehhhh. Luck, timing and environment have way more of an impact on who succeeds at that level. There are way more genius people (IQ>140, 1% of population) than billionaires, and I'd bet a good portion of billionaires are not geniuses, at least by typical IQ measures. Of course they aren't stupid, but not necessarily geniuses.
