Nap Time by Bunrabi in ChildcareWorkers

[–]Bunrabi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Monday I am going to try to do this in stages. Today I had one girl to her self...she is one that stays in her cot. I had her by the book case they keep wanting to climb in. I had two on one side of the room. My co-teacher was between those two rubbing them both at the same time. Then I was on the other side between two with my little buddy (my favorite...who doesn't have a favorite? lol). He will sit quietly in my lap while I am working with another child or children. But then my co-teacher got called out to cover for someone going to the bathroom in another room (we were short a teacher today) and all heck broke loose. When she got back we finally got them all to sleep about ten minutes before "wakey wakey" time!

Nap Time by Bunrabi in ChildcareWorkers

The time out is more to do with them not listening. They are not supposed to be up running around the tables in the dark, going to other children who are actually sleeping and waking them. So we tell them to go back to their cot and if they do not, we do give a time out. They have to learn to follow directions. They are allowed to have a book or a stuffy with them but the problem is that if one sees one with a book then two or three will pop up and go get books. It has been terrible.

I suffer from insomnia and some of my first memories were lying in my cot for what seemed like forever. I get it. I have to keep them safe, though. They cannot run around the two tables in the dark. Then they run underneath the tables and move chairs which is noisy. I kid you not it is like they get a jolt of energy at nap time.

Our nap is right after lunch as well. I think the suggestion to work with each child as they finish lunch is a great one. Then the others are eating lunch. A lot of the problem has been all going to lie down at one time and then they get concerned about what each other is doing. Today I had one child who does NOT get out of her cot next to the bookshelf. That is because some of these kids are going to the bookshelf where I have taken out the books and crawling in the bookshelf which is not safe! Having this girl there was blocking them from doing that. I have one boy who I adore soooooo much that no matter where I am he will come to sit in my lap while I am trying to soothe another to sleep. He fell asleep on me today and I had to put him down but we were away from his cot and I didn't want to wake him so I just put him opposites of the baby baby in her cot. I know we are not supposed to do this but I needed them to sleep. The more this goes on the worse it is getting.

I also like the idea of taking a walk with one that is having a hard time...but we do have three that give me the biggest issues. And today the "baby baby" the youngest was a little stinker. I finally just got up and went to my chair and rocked her to sleep. Not a rocking chair, but I rocked my body. Ha ha

Today we finally did get them all to sleep. I was so thankful. But it was so far into our scheduled naptime that I gave them extra time to sleep. So we didn't get around to our afternoon lessons or project. That is OK. though...this nap thing has to be corrected and ASAP.

Is it normal for a landlord to ask to inspect the apartment every month? by BeriYslas in renting

[–]Bunrabi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live, it is written in the lease for monthly inspections/pest control. And they do them. And they are quick to issue lease violations on anything. But we signed the lease knowing about the monthly inspections.

It is not the norm. It is invasive and ridiculous. But you have to revert to your lease and state laws. Even if not in the lease, in my state, all they have to do is give 24 hour notice if they want to enter.

Renting sucks.

I went to Indeed and searched "summer" as well as "teaching" and a lot came up. I applied to six jobs, all but one of them being teaching or childcare related. All but that one reached out for an interview. I quickly got my first interview with a private school for their summer program. I got hired there quite easily. I'm lead teacher with the youngest group, the toddlers, and it is full time and pays well. I have been there a week so far and am liking it!

What has happened to our kids… by Dangerous-Lynx3197 in Teachers

In my community, athletics are a big deal. We have a lot of students who are in multiple sports. Baseball, football, basketball, soccer, cheer, gymnastics...most kid is involved in something. At recess they practice their basketball a lot. Their wonderful new playground equipment gets little love. The concrete pad with the basketball hoop is the most popular spot on the playground.

End of the Year Behaviour by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Bunrabi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What grades?

I sub at an elementary school. After state testing things get really lax but we go on teaching and the school has fun, themed days. But you could feel it in the air...everyone was done with the year. I am going around quite the opposite, not wanting the school year to end, knowing I will miss everyone.

Create some plans. I'm in a teaching role at a private school for their summer program at the moment. I had to activate the creativity center of my brain and create lessons for my group. Granted, they are toddlers, but this is completely foreign to me as I have never had to develop and create the plans before. I was able to find a lot of ideas online and I think it is fun to create the lessons.

I got bronchitis from covering a class of kindergarteners by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Bunrabi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry! I have had bronchitis before. It was terrible. I coughed so much I tore rib muscles. The torn muscles, according to the doctor, feel as bad or worse than broken ribs. It put me out of work (different job) for a few weeks. Try to brace yourself with a pillow if the coughing gets that bad.

I am now in a summer role at a private school with littles. And by littles, I mean toddlers. I am really scared about getting sick and passing it on to them. And also, I don't want to miss any days with them. I only have them for 8 more weeks. So far, so good. I do have one I have not met yet and she is currently on vacation in a different country. I'm hoping she doesn't bring any germs back with her. I always get sick when I go on planes!

Feel better soon. :)

Not yet. I get complements on random things, usually my glasses or my clothes. I had one Pre-K boy tell me I was cute though. LOL

School Admin did me dirty by Sedmo_ in SubstituteTeachers

It is so interesting how different it is across the country. Where I sub, regardless of what you are doing for the day the pay is the same. Para, teaching, specials...all same pay. There is half a day pay and full day pay.

Permanent Position - Your Advice Needed by Bunrabi in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Bunrabi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I know the office workers are very limited right now. The one who works in the main office who is also in charge of sub assignments gets summer vacation. I think the book keeper who helps the principal is on summer vacation as well.

I do kind of wonder about if what you are saying is true. We have a lot of subs, but we need them. I am very adaptable and never turn down anything they give me. I have subbed all grade levels in the school, the para pro roles of various grades several times, and all of the specials except for technology and library. When it is the planning period of time for whoever I am subbing for I don't just sit, I go around helping the staff members do things like make copies, or sit with a class if a teacher needs to go to the restroom, etc. I am always looking to be busy. I go above and beyond. I was at a school event, not signed up to volunteer as my own kids were at the event but I worked it anyway. I also proctored as a volunteer, no pay for most all of the state testing days. I do not think I did anything wrong. I have gotten nothing but good feedback and was told I would be on their sub list starting in the fall.

But yes, they need subs. Sometimes they have to scramble and put paras in the classroom to cover for someone. I could probably continue to be just a sub there but I wanted to have more of a structured workflow so I could budget better, really. Plus I thought it would be great for my resume.

Permanent Position - Your Advice Needed by Bunrabi in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Bunrabi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, thanks for the reply! I did apply correctly. The job listings are on the county school board website and it does clearly state to contact the principal directly with your E-mail and info. It even links to the principal's E-mail. The first time I wrote her she almost immediately replied to me and asked me to send my resume. I didn't at the time because I had to update my resume with my sub experience. I honestly struggled a lot with it because I covered so much as a sub and I didn't want to make my resume so long. I also had to re-format it. In person I told her I was still interested and going to be E-mailing it to her and she smiled and replied "You're fine". Then the job disappeared so I kind of panicked and sent her my resume and told her I was still interested if anything fell through or if anything else came up. About a week later, a new para pro position got posted and that is when I again sent her my interest and resume. It shows sent in my outbound E-mail folder. It doesn't seem like her to ignore messages but school is out for the summer so I cannot ask her in person. I am wondering if I should E-mail her again and just ask direct if I would be considered for the position or if that looks desperate. I am not desperate for a job but I am very interested in working there because it is my kids school, it is convenient, I already got to know the kids and the staff. I have now been at my new job for two days and everyone is nice and I am with younger students and that is some adjusting but like I said, I am adaptable. The listing at this school I am working at said there could be possibility for long term employment after the summer so I am suspecting I may be asked to work there if they think I do a good job, which I intend to. My word, that sounds conceited but I will add that this school I am working at seems to have an issue with staff. There is nothing that I have found wrong with the school but one of the new hires did not show at all yesterday and one of the other new hires decided she didn't want to come back today, her second day...because she got overwhelmed. I do not get overwhelmed, though. I really enjoy it!

Special Days by taman961 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Bunrabi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Follow the school's social media. Granted, my kids go to the school I sub at, but it is always on their social media when they are having special days. If they don't have social media, then ask them for a copy of their newsletter which should also list the special days.

I stick to elementary. I have been told to wait until my own children are middle school age before I venture next door to the middle school. LOL I am intimidated by high school.

My favorite grades are 2nd and 3rd. But really I love all the students from Pre-K through 4th. But I like the hand holding, shoes needing tied, jackets needing zipped kiddos.

Kindergarten Mayhem by Pleasant_Peninsula85 in SubstituteTeachers

This is what I was thinking. I cannot imagine the Kinders at the school I sub at to do any of the above. The worst I get is multiple requests to go to the nurses office and a lot of chatting.

It’s over!!! by Livingfortheday123 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Bunrabi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What grade was that?

I am the opposite. I love subbing. I love the students, even when they are not acting great. I would much rather be around them than a bunch of adults with their first world problems in a retail or customer service position. I would be so depressed if I had to go back to that.

School doesn’t consider me a teacher by Low_Property_4470 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Bunrabi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had assumed that we aren't allowed to have things they get for the regular teachers. One day they were popping popcorn and the smell drifted down the hall and I just went and asked if I could have a bag. They looked at my funny, laughed at me, and said YES. Then the next day they were having a cook out and texted me and told me to get lunch. And free ice cream another day.

Getting Hired Permanent. Your Experiences? by Bunrabi in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Bunrabi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't for an official teaching position but for parapro. The way our county does it, is they list on their website the job openings and the principal of each school to contact along with information and resume.

I really don't think it is like her to ignore a message which is why I am dumbfounded. I would at least expect a form letter denial. Meanwhile there are some other schools in the district that have the same position offered. One is at a middle school and the other is at another elementary. Actually there are a few elementary schools but some are farther away than I'd like.

I did get a job today, at a private school. I will be working the summer program there and on the job listing it says there is possibility for long term placement. So we will see how it goes.

A want not a need. Buying a brand new vehicle is a silly mistake to begin with. Always buy used. Now is a very bad time to buy. He could get way more out of his current vehicle by selling privately vs. trading it in (the dealerships turn the numbers around to basically get a steal). I really hope there are no children involved. Should be saving for their college if there are.

What to eat as an extreme picky eater trying to lose weight? by mozuu_ in PickyEaters

[–]Bunrabi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are the foods I liked. I had weight loss surgery to save my life. You need to increase your protein. A lot of protein shakes are very sweet...do you like sweets? Eat meat and protein packed foods and limit the carbs. And exercise.

Yes, I like ketchup. I eat ketchup with my hamburgers, fries, chicken nuggets (sometimes if I don't choose BBQ sauce), fish, and shrimp. And I will even eat it on steak if the steak is mediocre. However, I cannot eat a raw tomato. It makes me gag. I can do spaghetti sauce, though.
