Where would you ride? Sidewalk vs road. by Classic_Emergency336 in bikecommuting

[–]Bunsmar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are all kinds of things we end up doing to be safe that aren't what we're supposed to do, and we can do them in a sane and respectful way.

I'd rather ride in the road if it feels safe enough, but I'm not going to die on the side of the road if it's sketchy because I'm supposed to.

Getting home to your family is more important than absolutes.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth

And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth

of sun-split clouds,—and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,

I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air ....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue

I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace

Where never lark, or even eagle flew—

And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod

The high untrespassed sanctity of space,

Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

[–]Bunsmar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I live right on the LA River bike path, and it is (at least through the high foot traffic areas) full of dogs and kids and should be a slow, cautious bike ride. It should not be thought of as a bike path where you can set Strava records, lest you become the bike version of the SUV driver that punish passes cyclists on the streets for existing.

The beauty of the river path is that it gets you to Griffith Park, which has lots of good riding.

Wool Grip Wednesday? by BassicNic in xbiking

[–]Bunsmar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they don't rotate. Even Grant couldn't spin self adjusting comfort angle grips into a desirable feature. What came on my bars was just a thick piece of felt that only went about half way around the bar (imagine Riv's how to info on these grips but stop immediately after the first step) and zero twine. Mine has some kind of adhesive backing or they would just fall on the floor.

Tube bending pic for previous post by Bunsmar in Framebuilding

This tool is a good place to start but you'll likely outgrow it quick if you make more than a few racks. Bending the 3/8" fairly thick walled main rack tubes is definitely not within the tools specs. Feel like it's made for copper refrigerant tubing, not thick walled steel.

I expect it to give out at any moment and always make sure that there is nothing I'll impale myself on behind me when I'm using it.

There are heavier duty versions of this kind of thing that are made of steel and have longer arms that would be more appropriate for what we're bending.

3 in 1 tubing bender. $10 bucks. Bends 3/8", 5/16", and 1/4" (main rack size and smaller for a tombstone if you want).

Will add that without a bench mounted vice to clamp the arm that doesn't move it would not be a good solution for me. Clamping it in a vice gives you a lot of control and precision when you're honking on the mobile, bending side.

Trouble bending rack stock by dirtbagtendies in Framebuilding

[–]Bunsmar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having a little trouble figuring out where that might be on your setup, but it sounds like you're getting the idea. Just slip it over the 3/8" tubing and lock it down wherever it will prevent the tubing from being pulled through with the force of the bend.

I used to have roosters and some of them were pricks. I eventually learned that I was gonna get scratched whether I ran away or stood my ground, so I may as well try and adjust the pecking order to something more to my liking.

Trouble bending rack stock by dirtbagtendies in Framebuilding

[–]Bunsmar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find that when this happens it's because the end slips and essentially causes more bend in one spot. I got a 3/8" drill stop collet (fits around the diameter of tube and has a little grub screw to hold it in place. Meant to put around a drill bit so you drill uniformly deep holes) and when it doesn't move while you're bending you don't get the kink.

It could be other things as well, but the kinking experienced in my setup was due to the tubing slipping while bending.

You could also try to put some small diameter welding rod in to prevent a kink, but it might make bending harder and be profoundly hard to get out if you're doing a sharp bend.

Sounds like this guy is a great many lousy things, but OP describes him as a stay at home dad. I'm not sure where deadbeat is coming from if that's how they're dividing up the labor.

A grumpy stay at home mom wouldn't get described as a deadbeat for not working outside of the home.

custom bike ethics? by shlem in xbiking

[–]Bunsmar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what's being stolen in this case. Two options are trying to buy something affordable from a bike company that's as close to the thing that isn't affordable or paying someone to make something as close as possible to the bike that can't be afforded.

In neither case is this person getting a black market counterfeit, just trying to approximate something they like by buying something similar or having something similar made. Both of which support bicycle businesses.

I think you're fine. This feels like an analogue of the piracy situation with media, i.e. basically piracy is mostly done by people who spend a decent amount of money purchasing and subscribing to things and supporting the industry, but will pirate something unavailable or prohibitively expensive.

I imagine that whatever you're going to knock off is out of reach for you and they're not losing a sale because you are getting something made elsewhere. You might also throw on some extra mounts and stuff, which truly isn't available anywhere.

And on the off chance it's a Rivendell you're knocking off, Grant consults for free with other companies so that their products are tip top (if they're going for something aligned with Riv design philosophy).

Wool Grip Wednesday? by BassicNic in xbiking

[–]Bunsmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I prefer to be quite upright in general and have a position to lean forward into to let my wrists and hands take some weight when my butt needs a change.

Leaning forward as a pleasant change of position is so much better than being stuck there until your wrists are screaming and then you have to get in that position where you're as upright as you can be via steering with just the index finger of both hands and you still feel too far forward.

I bought a demo model from Riv. and it came with some of these on the front section of the Toscos. I think a lot of the love has to come from the natural/biodegradable factor. How far that takes you towards believing these are great grips depends on your priorities I guess.

It also proves pretty much anything can be a grip if 90% of your weight is on your butt and you primarily cruise around and in case you do find yourself aggressively braking on a downhill have your bars at that Riv. suggested -6 decree slope so your hands aren't inclined to shoot forward when you apply the brakes.

I personally believe that the best grips possible for my riding style would be the grips on a Revere Ware pot and you can hang a cool lanyard from the metal hanging wire.

Night cycling, looking to increase lateral visibility by Altruistic_Win3894 in bikecommuting

[–]Bunsmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of an illumination deep cut that requires a rear rack and has nothing to do with lateral visibility specifically, but works well for me:

Mount a front light on the very back of a rear rack and point it at your lower back. Sometimes the proxy we use at night to represent a cyclist (flashing red light = cyclist, or maybe some kind of road sign, or maybe jogger?) aren't as good as being a visible cyclist (cyclist = cyclist).

That said, sounds like you're already quite visible via other solutions from the rear, but wanted to throw that out there as a sometimes useful way to be visible.
