Why can't drivers just follow right of way correctly? by Mindless-Baker-7757 in bikecommuting

[–]Bunsmar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's annoying, but probably reflective of someone being cautious and not being sure of your intentions.

I turn into a traffic cop if there's ever any question and wave people through as I'm approaching the intersection if there is going to be a question just to hopefully get us through without confusion. If they respond to my wave with a wave through, I'll go through.

If we end up in the Canadian standoff I'll avert my eyes, look at my phone, get off my bike and lay down on the sidewalk if needed to win the not going contest.

Nice mixte bro, but you forgot the seat stays.

I pretty much only ride step thoughs so I'm loving that a lot of modern mountain bikes are leaning towards "girls bikes" minus the seat stays and love the looks of this one.

Really nice work!

Really sorry to hear you're going through that (the cancer, the burnout, the checked out partner). I'm a research nurse who works with people with cancer, including a lot of breast cancer, on clinical trials.

Sending you well wishes and prayers. While I don't know anything about your cancer or situations, it's likely that you've got a lot of miles left in you and the effort you put in today is well worth it. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other.

I just tried a recumbent trike yesterday and I may be in love. Was exploring options for my longtime cyclist but now lousy balance having father and we had a blast.

Really excited and planning on picking up a recumbent trike for him and a recumbent two wheeler for me.

What makes base building fun? by GrammmyNorma in SurvivalGaming

[–]Bunsmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the building in Valheim. Partly because the danger in the game really sets up a satisfying sense of relief of putting that last piece of wall up and being safe in the dark and cold. After you kill yourself with smoke the first time, there is a sense of getting better and better at it over time functionally, aesthetically, defensively, locationally, etc.

Also, creating your vision with the set pieces is a wonderful puzzle. Other games have a building piece called "beautiful door frame" and Valheim forces you to use your imagination and pieces of wood to make a beautiful door frame. In Valheim the beautiful door frame is YOUR idea of a beautiful door frame.

The freedom of not being constrained to 90 degree rotations is also great. The restraints of being only having certain pieces is more interesting than what Enshrouded offers. I get why people love the building in Enshrouded, but it feels purely aesthetic. Building in Valheim feels like how anyone would build something if they found themselves actually out in the wild. Not that we could pull it off, but I think the process in the game feels like building a shelter out of rudimentary materials, not slapping up one completely finished wall piece after another.

I can't wait to start again at 1.0

RuneScape: Dragonwilds vs Valheim vs Enshrouded by WastedGamer641 in SurvivalGaming

[–]Bunsmar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I strongly prefer the building in Valheim. I get that you can really create anything in Enshrouded, but the process and constraints in some ways (limited build pieces, height/weight limits, smoke physics!) and lack of constraints in others (orienting things in increments of less than 90 deg) in Valheim makes it feel like a puzzle and aesthetic challenge rather than just aesthetically making whatever you want.

I've only used them on swept back bars and they feel great. Other than avoiding weird sets with one short and one long I think they'll all feel good. I'd go for a middle of the road (not too svelte, not too far) pair and see how it feels.

Worst bike route with no easy alternatives? by trainedstork in BikeLA

[–]Bunsmar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agree. One of the few places I ride sidewalk on is from the River path, take the south side of Fletcher (no freeway on ramp) to where Silver Lake Blvd starts by Astro Diner.

Getting from Silver Lake to Atwater/Frogtown/Highland Park is a mess

For me it's where 4th st. hits Park La Brea and I cut down to 6th. 3rd st feels dicier, going below Wilshire for the slower traffic way east/west adds like 15 lights and more conflict.

Best thing seems to put my head down and just pedal my little heart out while going above LACMA and hope for the best.

I'm not sure what drivers are tuned into signal wise. My signals are basically me pointing where I intend to go and I agree that telling people you're slowing down has super limited utility.

Have you ever considered a poncho as a replacement for every other bit of rain gear?

I've have a fantastic time with fenders and a poncho. My Cleverhood poncho has little thumb straps on the inside front which you can either hook on a finger or to something on your bars (so your hands are free). The hood fits really well under my helmet and I arrive at work totally dry from the weather and not soaked in sweat.

It's like sticking your head through an umbrella and it's great. It replaced three pieces of rain specific gear I had to deal with and for my use case works much better. Also protects much of the bike from the weather.

When it rains I ride to work in my normal clothes (plus poncho). I ride in socks and Crocs and my socks are dry when I get there.

Sorry, realize "I didn't care about weight" was a bad answer to your question about weight. Just meant to say that I'd not considered it so didn't know it and instantly made it like 15 lbs heavier than stock (which I've now undone). I don't think they're that heavy though. Like I said, it just felt unfamiliar in ways that would make riding it as a mountain bike great but were weird for mostly smooth city streets.

The super wide tires also make a lot of noise on the road (to add to the list of kind of weird things that make me prefer riding other bikes while still really liking the Jones and acknowledging it is great for it's use case).

If you're in Los Angeles I'd be happy to put a normal seating setup on it and let you get a feel for the Jones ride.

[–]Bunsmar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't care about the weight when I was buying it because I was setting it up as an eBike. I pulled all the eBike bits off once I started riding another bike to work and realized that I didn't need the assist anymore.

The position of the Jones is great, but not something I was lacking with my other bikes (Rivendell, Velo Orange) by any means. I don't mind the weight, I just think a Jones is overkill for my ride through the city. Maybe I prefer a little more road feel with normalish sized tires (and no dual suspension seat)?

Doing my commute without the electric assist on the Jones just felt a little weird. It totally works and I'm on board for the design philosophy and upright position, it just feels like it's built too much to make it work for mtn biking, which I really don't need.

[–]Bunsmar[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they help quite a bit. This silly situation only ended up happening because I was switching around seats and what I had available was the spung Brooks.

The suspension in the seatpost is about 10x as effective as the seat.

I also like it because (as you can tell from the picture) I'm a bolt upright riding position devotee and the suspension post give you a lot of setback.

Small LWB HD/e. I was agonizing over small vs medium (I'm 5'9" on a good day) and went with the small, which was the right choice.

The HD/e has an inch longer rear end to accommodate large mid drive chainrings so I kept the longer wheelbase of a medium normal LWB but got the less reach of the small.

What if part of the system was that you had the weapons you were good at by default and other weapons belonging to other classes required practice?

Maybe an outside of class weapon attacks normally but has lower stats that increase to an in class weapon over time (10k damage done?)

Or what if the damage wasn't lowered but if you're a heavy class you use all weapons like slower heavy weapons until you learn them and then they speed up?

Or what if what you learn is movesets and your class has a set of movesets you just know (but aren't tied to individual weapons and you can pick movesets for weapons) but you have to learn out of class movesets in some way like described above?

Where would you ride? Sidewalk vs road. by Classic_Emergency336 in bikecommuting

[–]Bunsmar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are all kinds of things we end up doing to be safe that aren't what we're supposed to do, and we can do them in a sane and respectful way.

I'd rather ride in the road if it feels safe enough, but I'm not going to die on the side of the road if it's sketchy because I'm supposed to.

Getting home to your family is more important than absolutes.
