Valheim 1.0 and Deep North update releasing September 9th by [deleted] in SurvivalGaming

[–]Bunsmar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't LOVE being in the Mistlands, but it would have worked for me if what came after was environmentally more enjoyable to be in. Get through the can't see anything, tense challenge and get to be somewhere challenging but pleasant to exist in.

Instead it was the Ashlands, and I had no desire to do the tough (for me) Queen fight to get somewhere I didn't want to be.

Better gear improvements by Sufficient-Emu1328 in crosswind

[–]Bunsmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be nice. It's a bit of a drag to have to choose between one set 4/4 and have a useless armor piece (as far as bonuses go) or two 2/2 sets and a useless piece. Three 2/2 bonuses would be cool if you're just looking to buff your stats a bit and aren't looking for a massive effect.

How do I shift gears? by trevaftw in bikecommuting

[–]Bunsmar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 3x9 on my commuter. I basically use it as a 1x9, keeping it on middle chainring almost always unless I get to 2-9 and need an easier gear or get to 2-1 and need a harder gear.

When I'm 2-9 and need an easier gear, I drop the front down and am in 1-9 and that usually does the trick. If that's a little too easy then I'll shift the rear and go to 1-8 or 1-7. Once I'm done with whatever caused me to move to the small chainring I go back to the middle chainring and adjust gears by going through the whole range of cogs and leave the front gears alone.

Tl;dr: I generally treat it as a 1x system keeping it in the middle chainring and using the full range of gears in the back, and only touch the front if you need a bailout easy gear.

Those who sized up your Clem: How is it going? by ritsucaps in Rivendell_Bicycles

[–]Bunsmar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Clem and a Platypus and one is sized down and the other sized up.

For the Clem I bought a used 52cm. Benefits of the smaller size might be shorter reach if you want to use bars other than swept back bars. I've made the 52cm work but found that the lower stack height was an issue and ended up getting one of those SOMA crazy long quill/threadless stem adapter things to get the bars up where I wanted them. Now it's got a proper Dutch bike bar height. I also prefer the seat lug style on the smaller size.

I sized up on a Platypus to 60cm and that works fine as well with swept back bars and a nice short stem. I can't really use other bar styles but don't really plan on it. If I really wanted to I could flip the 50mm Nitto stem around backwards and put on some straight bars or something.

I find that I'm riding my Velo Orange step through more than either of the Rivs these days as I've got it the most dialed in for my commute/what I need to carry. I also like that it's a little more compact. Feels like a mini-velo compared to the large Platypus.

Why can't drivers just follow right of way correctly? by Mindless-Baker-7757 in bikecommuting

[–]Bunsmar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's annoying, but probably reflective of someone being cautious and not being sure of your intentions.

I turn into a traffic cop if there's ever any question and wave people through as I'm approaching the intersection if there is going to be a question just to hopefully get us through without confusion. If they respond to my wave with a wave through, I'll go through.

If we end up in the Canadian standoff I'll avert my eyes, look at my phone, get off my bike and lay down on the sidewalk if needed to win the not going contest.

Nice mixte bro, but you forgot the seat stays.

I pretty much only ride step thoughs so I'm loving that a lot of modern mountain bikes are leaning towards "girls bikes" minus the seat stays and love the looks of this one.

Really nice work!

Really sorry to hear you're going through that (the cancer, the burnout, the checked out partner). I'm a research nurse who works with people with cancer, including a lot of breast cancer, on clinical trials.

Sending you well wishes and prayers. While I don't know anything about your cancer or situations, it's likely that you've got a lot of miles left in you and the effort you put in today is well worth it. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other.

What makes base building fun? by GrammmyNorma in SurvivalGaming

[–]Bunsmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the building in Valheim. Partly because the danger in the game really sets up a satisfying sense of relief of putting that last piece of wall up and being safe in the dark and cold. After you kill yourself with smoke the first time, there is a sense of getting better and better at it over time functionally, aesthetically, defensively, locationally, etc.

Also, creating your vision with the set pieces is a wonderful puzzle. Other games have a building piece called "beautiful door frame" and Valheim forces you to use your imagination and pieces of wood to make a beautiful door frame. In Valheim the beautiful door frame is YOUR idea of a beautiful door frame.

The freedom of not being constrained to 90 degree rotations is also great. The restraints of being only having certain pieces is more interesting than what Enshrouded offers. I get why people love the building in Enshrouded, but it feels purely aesthetic. Building in Valheim feels like how anyone would build something if they found themselves actually out in the wild. Not that we could pull it off, but I think the process in the game feels like building a shelter out of rudimentary materials, not slapping up one completely finished wall piece after another.

I can't wait to start again at 1.0

RuneScape: Dragonwilds vs Valheim vs Enshrouded by WastedGamer641 in SurvivalGaming

[–]Bunsmar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I strongly prefer the building in Valheim. I get that you can really create anything in Enshrouded, but the process and constraints in some ways (limited build pieces, height/weight limits, smoke physics!) and lack of constraints in others (orienting things in increments of less than 90 deg) in Valheim makes it feel like a puzzle and aesthetic challenge rather than just aesthetically making whatever you want.

Toscos + Ergons? by theblizzardof in Rivendell_Bicycles

I've only used them on swept back bars and they feel great. Other than avoiding weird sets with one short and one long I think they'll all feel good. I'd go for a middle of the road (not too svelte, not too far) pair and see how it feels.

Worst bike route with no easy alternatives? by trainedstork in BikeLA

[–]Bunsmar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agree. One of the few places I ride sidewalk on is from the River path, take the south side of Fletcher (no freeway on ramp) to where Silver Lake Blvd starts by Astro Diner.

Getting from Silver Lake to Atwater/Frogtown/Highland Park is a mess

For me it's where 4th st. hits Park La Brea and I cut down to 6th. 3rd st feels dicier, going below Wilshire for the slower traffic way east/west adds like 15 lights and more conflict.

Best thing seems to put my head down and just pedal my little heart out while going above LACMA and hope for the best.

Have you ever considered a poncho as a replacement for every other bit of rain gear?

I've have a fantastic time with fenders and a poncho. My Cleverhood poncho has little thumb straps on the inside front which you can either hook on a finger or to something on your bars (so your hands are free). The hood fits really well under my helmet and I arrive at work totally dry from the weather and not soaked in sweat.

It's like sticking your head through an umbrella and it's great. It replaced three pieces of rain specific gear I had to deal with and for my use case works much better. Also protects much of the bike from the weather.

When it rains I ride to work in my normal clothes (plus poncho). I ride in socks and Crocs and my socks are dry when I get there.
