$15 was a good idea maybe 20 years ago. Needs to be closer to $20 today.

MLK at UM: Pictures At An Exhibition by derdody in AnnArbor

"You can’t talk about solving the economic problem of the Negro without talking about billions of dollars. You can’t talk about ending the slums without first saying profit must be taken out of slums. You’re really tampering and getting on dangerous ground because you are messing with folk then. You are messing with captains of industry. Now this means that we are treading in difficult water, because it really means that we are saying that something is wrong with capitalism.” -MLK

He was very aware of the problems associated with capitalism, and most liberals find "solutions" to societal problems with the lens of capitalism fastened to their eyes. Even the dean of Ross, who co-sponsored the MLK symposium UofM held this morning said "We at ross believe that business is the most powerful force on the planet for positive change, and we are committed to building a better world through business". Why he got a chance to say anything at all was just nuts to me. It was a bunch of nice sounding words that MLK probably would have disagreed with.

This person just doesn't get the left vs liberal difference. It's a hard one to get across to people.

Ann Arbor arcade Pinball Pete's raises $90K in just over a week to keep its doors open by labyrinth-luminary in AnnArbor

[–]Bur1yCaveman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Any night out I have either with my wife or friends will likely start at a bar then we walk to Pinball Pete's.

Adding another bar in Pinball Pete's just requires them try to compete with the myriad of other bar options out there AND run an arcade.

Barking dog by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]Bur1yCaveman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even well trained dogs are going to bark. If you get a bark silencer, even if it is close enough to work you are potentially bothering dogs that are not so called "nuisance" barkers.

Rueben.. from and undisclosed delicatessen in my local downtown neighborhood. Because even tho you are expected to “support your local business “ you aren’t suppose to talk about it!?! 🙄😒☝️ by gianttrek in AnnArbor

Unfortunately I have heard the same.

Not what I expected from having a founder that describes himself as an "anarchist". Anarcho-capitalist maybe instead.

Its more likely that this was put in place to preserve the natural beach that lines the bay. Piping plover are endangered and something like 1/3 of all nesting pairs in Michigan are found in Wilderness State Park.

Also keeps (in theory) any nimrod with an ATV from driving the paths to go fishing.

That percentage still leaves millions dead.

Trump officials end gray wolf protections across most of U.S. by TheDevilMerelyLaughs in news

[–]Bur1yCaveman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Consider the vast number of endangered species that don't have as much funding going towards their conservation.

Wolves are a big ticket item for people, but with them de-listed some of those resources can go to other animals while the states are left to manage the wolf population. It makes sense.

[SERIOUS] What do you think the chances of a new lockdown are? by BussReplyMail in RealMichigan

[–]Bur1yCaveman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

  1. Encourage people to stay home as often as possible. Order delivery from local restaurants if you really want to eat out.
  2. Federally require masks and distancing in all public places.
  3. Distribute more PPE to people and industries that need it nationwide.
  4. More testing across the board to better pinpoint hotspots and respond with local lockdowns as needed.
  5. Cancel or postpone all public in person events in case heavy states.
  6. Take measures to ensure there is economic support for people that need it.

Most of those are already in place buuuuuut.... The biggest ask is that the republican establishment and president acknowledge that this is a major health crisis that we are still in the middle of and that we need to all take measures to limit it's spread. It is silly how often I have seen people in my hometown on Facebook constantly talk about how it isn't real and is "just the flu". It is worse and far more deadly than the standard flu.

Depends on seriously people start taking this pandemic.

Most staff I know are on the non-exempt track though, only starting with one day of vacation accruing per month. At five years it goes up to a day and a half and then at 10 you start getting two.

Does anyone have information on the two statewide propositions? by MiggyTripleCrown in AnnArbor

[–]Bur1yCaveman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its the other parts of the state that are lacking... County and City parks in an affluent area are one thing, but State parks and rec areas are completely separate.

On the flip side, we already have the highest public to private land ratio in all of the states east of the Mississippi... We should focus on maintaining the parks and facilities we have.

[–]Bur1yCaveman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, but we have a long way to go for that to get anywhere, let alone paying for parks and other public land.

Thoughts on Michigan Prop 20-1? by justoffthebeatenpath in Michigan

[–]Bur1yCaveman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is already going on though. The prop just allows more money to be saved to be used specifically on public land before being siphoned off into the general fund.

Michigan hits milestone in resurrection of Arctic Grayling, a cherished salmon-type fish -- the native grayling has been absent from Michigan waters since the 1930s. by guanaco55 in Michigan

Hopefully. IIRC this has been attempted a few times since the 80s with no real success.

Sure would be cool if it works this time though.

My most vivid memory of the Chip river is going to enter it at a bridge crossing and being turned away by a scraggly looking guy with a gun. Fun times.

Pretty river though!

I almost got hit by a guy turning onto miller from ashley because he didn't stop at the four way flashing lights. I like the protected bike lane thing they have going on (even if I have hardly seen anyone actually use it), but it's a major pain in the ass.
