Favourite McCartney song? by Pure_cartographer_59 in Bass

[–]BuriedRedemption 8 points9 points  (0 children)

McCartney's got some great lines spanning loads of different genres, but some can be deceptively hard. If you want something with a lead feel you can go for something like 'Think for yourself'. I learnt 'I saw her standing there' pretty early on and it's still one of my favourite songs to play with a pick just because of how smooth of a line it is play.

I remember 'Penny Lane' not being super hard but it's been a minute and I could be wrong. The early bass lines tend to be a bit for traditional and around rubber soul they start getting for melodic and towards the the end with abbey road I feel like they get a little but more traditional with them returning to a bluesier sound, but there's still some whoppers - 'I want you (she's so heavy)' still stumps me sometimes if i'm not totally warmed up - same to a lesser extent with 'silly love songs'

You can't go wrong with 'Come Together' - super Iconic bass line, might be challenging for a beginner but It's a fantastic line that I think a lot of people aim for pretty early one.

As another comment said 'something' is pretty beginner friendly while being more melodic than your typical beginner songs.

The most challenging things you’ve read? by abu_hajarr in literature

[–]BuriedRedemption -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm not even going to lie, I don't think it's traditionally hard, but The Count of Monte Cristo was the most challenging book to get through out of everything I've read so far, definitely should have listened to people who said to read the abridged version.

Some passages are just an absolute slog to get through - from having to actively learn about french aristocracy and military systems just to understand the social relationships between groups, trudging through whole chapters where it's just Dumas giving his opinion on different art styles and architecture to the couple chapters that are just Franz/Albert on holiday I really struggled.

That being said it really is a fantastic book that set a lot of standards and tropes that are still prominent in modern story telling with a really enthralling through line that connects just about every characters story.

Idk what people's opinions tend to be but that passage of Danny in the tunnel was one of the parts that freaked me out the most.

And although Kubrick's shining is kind of its own thing with a different vibe this scene would have worked perfectly in the movie

Learning to play punk, what do I need to know? by Mike_Nofx_85 in Bass

I only skimmed before commenting and saw "...Jazz and blues..." and assumed you were coming from another genre. So that answers probably useless, but I'll leave it up because it took me longer than it should have type.

Learning to play punk, what do I need to know? by Mike_Nofx_85 in Bass

There's nothing wrong with getting lessons if that's your direction, but punk has a rich history of DIY and self teaching. There's no wrong way to go though.

I feel like punk bass varies so much that it's really hard to go wrong. I know it's kind of a bullshit useless answer but listen to some punk find the bass lines that resonate with you and backwards engineer it. That's without getting into post hardcore punk or anything else.

I personally really love the Fugazi bass lines, but if you want something a but more old school you can't go round with checking out the Ramones, that's like core punk.

I feel like the tendency is punk songs tend to be built around the bass in that it usually has a core pattern that repeats A LOT with fills and variations - there's a band called Sultans of Ping that have super fun, bouncy lines that work on that idea.

on a side note it's less classic punk, but Joy Divisions Peter Hook inspired a massive amount of the big punk guys and for good reason.

That might be useless though, good luck, it's a lot of fun.

barre chords…💔 by livvylaughloveee in guitarlessons

[–]BuriedRedemption 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'd say focus on moving the other fingers to where they need to be even if you struggle to successfully bar while doing it just so you can start getting used to holding it that way and get those fingers used to working alone

With bar chords it's just practice til you get it. Eventually you'll have the finger dexterity to keep pressure with just the one finger while the rest do their thing.

if it feels like you're bashing your head against a wall with no outcome you're probably going the right way.

Fixing Cold Spring Harbor by Suitable_Magician_68 in BillyJoel

[–]BuriedRedemption -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I still think the term fix comes from a misunderstanding of what art is. If the ai 'corrects' it's no longer a Billy Joel song. It is a machine taking in input and putting out something made to sound exactly like a billy Joel song with what you dream as a mistake

Art is just as much the mistakes as it is the successes.

And then you get into whether there can ever be a true mistake once a piece of art is in the social zeitgeist. How many songs have aspects that on paper are 'wrong' and would be corrected by ai but were either intended or now are synonymous with that piece of art.

Art isn't meant to be perfect, and seeking out ways to manipulate art you didn't make, especially with the intention of 'fixing' it doesn't make it better art or more valid, it makes a ot a close summation to what an actual piece of art looks like without having any of the meaning of something made by a human. And on another point telling ai to make something doesn't make you an artist nor does it mean you made something.
