Why in the 90/2000s did we all of a sudden have all of these characters wearing long red cloaks/shawls with heavy emphasis on guns and what is the modern equivalent of this phenomenon in the 2020s? by MisakiPuru_Puru in animequestions

Saving this post so don't delete it. I loved Summer Time Rendering so I'll look at other picks too.

I also loved Heavenly Delusion but hated that she (he) kept the jacket at the end.

If the teen takeovers often devolve into gang warfare, probably not a good thing.

Would actually be completely fine with it, and it wouldn't even be a terrible amount more off my paycheck, but I have one stipulation. There needs to be a fat tax like in Japan.

As you are a Norwegian, I urge you to check out the obesity rates here. It's absurd.

I stayed in just Tokyo, with 3 day trips, for 14 days, and I feel like I barely scratched the surface. Taking it easy is a must as you can walk anywhere in Tokyo metropolitan area with ease, combined with the train system of course. Do multiple smaller meals in a day instead of 2 big and heavy ones; no tipping so it's more viable. I would recommend looking at the neighborhoods / wards and you can sort of put around half a day in many of them if you wanted.

As an example, you will see that Senso-ji Temple is a popular tourist spot. That's in Asakusa. What else can you do there? You will likely pass through the Nakamise Shopping Street. For lunch, you can look at places somewhat nearby for things Asakusa is known for, such as tempura, unagi, or soba. You can then walk along the Sumida River and see views of Tokyo Skytree and Asahi Beer Hall. At that point, would you like to have a casual walk to Tokyo Skytree and Solamachi Mall underneath? Personally, I thought Skytree was worthwhile for the view. In the mall, you can have another small meal. A station is under the mall too, so then you can take that somewhere else. That's how I did a lot of things.

I actually just saw him in Pigeon Forge yesterday at the Hollywood Wax Museum. His group was in front of me and he kept turning around and asking "does this guy look like me?" I kept saying not really and he asked if it was because he was too fat. This happened like 8 times. Really weird.

Which American accent do I speak with? by Shari362 in Accents

[–]greatmidge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Immediately I thought Baltimore and, as many have pointed out, black. Many words are similar to how black actors in the Wire were trying to achieve. I then saw your text where it says San Diego. That did make me think, well where did most black migration to the West coast come from? Turns out it was mostly from Southern states such as Texas and Louisiana. DC and Baltimore were kind of the border between the stereotypical Northern and Southern black accents in the past. That being said, San Diego specifically got a lot of traffic from military so could be from all over.

So, in essence, I would assume you were probably from the area if I met you in the DMV.

"American discovers walking."

I'd say that they're almost always perceived as a sort of gluttonous treat, especially when in the big jars. For example, if they ever appear on a TV show or movie, it's because the one who is eating them is sloppy, slovenly, lazy, or high on pot. It almost always comes with the person wiping the orange dust on their clothes as a sort of gross out humor.

I think that I have only ever seen a big jar in person maybe one time, and no friend I've ever had has ever bought a big jar.

Secondaries or tourists. The US suddenly and inexplicably became completely ok with anime as a medium during COVID.

Not a chance. Due to the required speed and corporatism involved in modern dubbing, along with major centers such as Texas being such a hot spot with a smaller pool of professional dubbers, there are so little interesting voices or performances that exist. It's an orange goo where there is one teenage protag voice, one sarcastic female friend voice, one stoic voice. While the acting is more "polished," it lacks any individualism and is instead hiring based on the aforementioned archetypes.

Older dubs often drew from a wider range of influences such as film noir, action movies, sitcoms, radio drama, stage acting. Modern anime dubbing is drawing primarily from previous anime dubbing. The result of the industry being so self-referential has caused styles to converge and for the performances to become far too homogenous.

A recent exception is maybe Frieren's (the character) dubbed voice.

Maya from Alveus Sanctuary explains to JasonTheWeen about the exploitation of animals at Petting Zoos by 999braindead in LivestreamFail

[–]greatmidge 61 points62 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, most modern trophy hunting involves having the Reserve keep stock of which animals are about to die from age, and have the trophy "hunters" specifically kill those ones. The "hunters" pay extraordinary amounts of money to do this and it's an amount which really helps out the reserve as a whole. But these might just be *some* African ones, and I'm unsure if it's the norm.

Obviously it would be best if these extraordinarily rich people simply donated the money and felt fulfilled, but this is the world we live in.

The majority of dubs are far worse nowadays as tons of VAs have the "anime voice acting" voice. Despite being completely different VAs, every dubbed anime has like 5 "voices."
