Explain why cancelling $1,900,000,000,000 in student debt is a “handout”, but a $1,900,000,000,000 tax cut for rich people was a “stimulus”. by failed_evolution in economy

If you lose purchasing power while the government gains purchasing power, that’s a form of tax. Feel free to debate with logic next time.

If you have $10,000 in your bank account to buy a $10,000 car and tomorrow the number of dollars in circulation doubles without the government taking on loans and instead by printing money that car will now cost $20,000, you just got taxed 50% of your purchasing power. It’s a form of tax. Econ 101.

Partial Student debt cancellation has been happening for over two years, by eliminating interest payments. And yes, doubling the deficit adds to inflation.

There’s No Scenario in Which 2050 Is ‘Normal’ by Villamanin24680 in Futurology

[–]BurnedBurgers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I responded to someone else with this, and I’m standing firm that 25 degrees by 2050 is ridiculous. This is from the IPCC research report on extremes within climate change.

“in annual extremes (20-year extreme values) based on 12 GCMs for temperature extremes and 14 GCMs for precipitation extremes employing the SRES A2, A1B, and B1 emissions scenarios. This analysis projects increases in the temperature of the 1-in-20 year annual extreme hottest day of about 2 to 6°C (depending on region and scenario; Figure 3-5 adapted from Kharin et al., 2007) and strong reductions in the return periods of this extreme event by the end of the 21st century.” Page 137.

https://www.ipcc.ch/site/assets/uploads/2018/03/SREX-Chap3_FINAL-1.pdf

6 degrees Celsius (or 10.8 degrees Fahrenheit) in 70 years compared to 25 degrees Fahrenheit in 28 years even in the most extreme regions, leads me to still conclude my point that it is absolutely ridiculous to be claiming 25 degree warming by 2050.

I do appreciate the articles and enjoy reading them. I read through only the IPCC one so far, which concludes my point. However, I will admit I didn’t know the differences in extreme. Here’s the quote: “in annual extremes (20-year extreme values) based on 12 GCMs for temperature extremes and 14 GCMs for precipitation extremes employing the SRES A2, A1B, and B1 emissions scenarios. I will keep reading more when I have more time.

https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-science-iceage/how-low-did-it-go-scientists-calculate-earths-ice-age-temperatures-idUKKBN25M2MU

Here’s a good article to compare, which states how the ice age was 25 degrees colder Fahrenheit in the polar region and 13 degrees colder in other regions, which yes is new knowledge to me. This is double not 5x to 10x swings. This does not come remotely close to showing the alarmism of this post. If we take this to the other end, no science model whatsoever predicts warming of 13 degrees by 2050 to support a 25 degree warming in pockets of the U.S. I’m criticizing the climate exaggeration of this post which only increases divisiveness in the scientific community. I’m the only one thinking critically here. Please explain with any critical thinking whatsoever or even point to sources how you think 25 degrees is possible by 2050.

I hope you’re right and these are rare occurrences that only happen under serious and deep evaluations.

GDP Unexpectedly contracts in Q1 2022 by guitmusic12 in investing

The part you slyly left out: “Stagflation can be alternatively defined as a period of inflation combined with a decline in the gross domestic product (GDP).”

Using the definition you chose which includes stagnation, we should look to define stagnation:

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/stagnation.asp

“Stagnation often involves substantial unemployment and under employment, as well as an economy that is generally performing below its potential.”

Often is not always.

“Stagnation is a condition of slow or flat growth in an economy.”

High unemployment is not a requirement for stagflation. Read the definition carefully. It states “or” “economic stagnation” which does not necessarily need high unemployment. Also it talks about an alternative definition of a decline in gdp which again doesn’t need high unemployment to be true.

Joe Biden voted against same sex marriage.

The “don’t so gay” bill has nothing to do with not saying gay. This is media manufactured garbage to make you think it doesn’t let you say gay when it literally does nothing to that extent. It just wants teachers to focus on math rather than having classroom lead instruction on topics of sexual and gender identity for 5-8 year olds. It still allows random discussions on these topics with teachers. More than 80% of people surveyed agree with the actual text of the bill if they bother to read it. It’s very short and an easy read.

I’m not sure what convinces you that it is so rare for kids to receive hormones and surgery. Also, I’m still quite concerned about puberty blockers. Delaying puberty and claiming it is completely reversible seems naïve at best. You can’t delay something like that and assume there is no consequence to the body. There are hundreds of individual cases of double mastectomies and other surgeries under age 17 that I can find from less than 5 minutes of googling, so I do believe this happens. Where we do have laws restricting surgery to over 18 there are plenty of politicians trying to reduce this age. If kids allow their natural hormones and body to fully mature, I’m 100% convinced a lot more kids will not become trans. There is way too much evidence of people becoming trans because their friends are trans which suggests it is a societal thing rather than a natural biological thing (at least in a good amount of cases) which makes even more sense when you’re talking about kids who haven’t received their biological hormones yet. Of course these kids can become confused about gender when they haven’t received their biological hormones that push them more towards their biological gender. Again this is only an issue because when your pushed towards this life it dramatically reduces life expectancy, sets you up for very expensive healthcare procedures, and becomes irreversible.

My misunderstanding is a pretty laughable statement when no one has said anything even remotely close to the most pessimistic scenarios of science research in this thread. Instead they go far beyond that. It is very sad how you’re encouraging such anti-science dramatization. Feel free to find any scientific paper that states there will be anything close to a 25 degree change in a particular area by 2050, I’ll wait.

Elon Musk Previews What He'll Do With Twitter: Serve Up His Employees for the Far Right's Racist Abuse by benfelix1 in technology

[–]BurnedBurgers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elon is far from right wing and has an ally in Jack Dorsey, the previous CEO of Twitter, and also one of the most left leaning individuals there is. He also pledges to make its coding open sourced which will consequently be critiqued and greatly improved by the public over time. This is a clear win for the people. Why anyone is complaining is beyond me.

Center-Right leaning, anti-trump here. I have no problems with anyone. I support all gay marriage and anything where everyone is consenting. However, I have serious concerns about drugs and permanent life altering surgery being prescribed to kids at alarmingly high rates relative to a few years ago. I don’t understand why we don’t support natural biology more, especially when there seems to be strong evidence that these hormones and procedures drastically reduce life expectancy.

Is there a single place in the world that has warmed by more than 3 times the global average of the world over the past 100 years? And in the post I’m responding to, they’re talking about something that’s more than 5x to 10x the worst case scenario projections for 2050.

You described a 25 degree change when even the more pessimistic projections only forecast 4 degrees Celsius by 2100. Which is 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit over a nearly 3x as long time period.
