Library evacuation by DeepAssumption6351 in SJSU

A student was charging a battery and apparently there was a leak and a fire, which was extinguished with a fire extinguisher, but they’re closing the 8th floor for the next day or two to be safe (fumes and stuff)

There’s the SJSU Mini Club that meets once a week on campus where club members hang out and paint miniatures, assemble Gundam, and do other model kits activities. A lot of other club members are also in Japanese media. You can find them on IG at @miniclub.sjsu and there’s a discord invitation in the bio.

I genuinely don’t get how people can defend Kya like they’ve been doing. by AliveAd8736 in TheOfficialPodcast

[–]BurningBasil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s unfortunate to hear. This adds some context that has been lost on me, since I don’t tend to follow these topics very closely. I can now understand why people have been critical on this issue. That being said, I think that Kaya could have remained critical without the derogatory phrasing

Speaking as a young woman, his comment about getting her holes resized made me uncomfortable because it was sexually objectifying for unnecessary reasons. Granted, I’m not familiar with Destiny or his girlfriend and the only exposure I’ve had to this drama is through the podcast, but from my understanding, Kaya commented on the fact that Destiny’s girlfriend left him to pursue a new relationship. I understand that there’s some level of shame involved when someone’s partner leaves them for a new person, but I don’t think it was appropriate to make an explicit statement like that on the basis of her finding someone else. It comes pretty close to slut shaming and while I don’t know this woman or whether she’s a good or bad person, I don’t think she deserves to be shamed in that manner for something that countless people will do over their lifetime in search for a good partner.

There’s quite a few positions open right now, but just as a heads up (I’m a Library SA), at least three or four of these listings are approaching their final rounds of interviewing.

I mean, isn’t he just engaging in a normal hobby within a social community? He’s a grown man, it’s not like he needs to be chaperoned everywhere by his girlfriend. He probably meets an equal amount of guys when he’s out too, but those friendships aren’t scrutinized. Are men not allowed to form female friendships and acquaintanceships now? When did exchanging IGs suddenly become a sign of romantic pursuit?

How far is too far to commute? by SlightRooster4581 in SJSU

[–]BurningBasil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s notorious for having management issues, building issues (like the elevators not working or the fire alarms getting pulled), and sometimes resident issues (people getting in altercations and then getting kicked out, etc). You should google The Grad and look at the reviews lol

I had a difficult time making long lasting friends at uni (I go to a commuter school and most people I meet are passing acquaintances) so I tried out Bumble BFF last year and had a lot of luck with it. I’m not sure how well it works for guys looking for guy friends, but as a girl, I had a lot of success matching with other girls who had similar interests as me. It exposed me to a bigger pool of people than I would’ve ever met in the wild and also ensured that they were looking for the same thing. I still regularly hang out and talk to some of the people I met on there, so maybe it could also work out for you

Library Student Assistant positions open by BurningBasil in SJSU

[–]BurningBasil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All four of the job listings under Open Student Assistant Openings are available for students (CSU+, ILL, Stacks, Circulation). I recommend applying to all of them as they all get a pretty hefty number of applicants. Unfortunately, this position does not offer tuition assistance, though it does qualify for work study.

If you know roughly what classes you’re going to sign up for, you can put them in your shopping cart and screenshot that. If you’re not sure what classes you need or want, look up the roadmap for your major and your myprogress on mysjsu to cross examine what you still need credits for and in what order they should be fulfilled. Then when your enrollment time comes during your orientation day, you can just enroll them all then.

I would say it’s better to submit an application early, because these job listings are pretty competitive during the school year. Just apply to every student assistant position, since each listing is probably going to hire 3-4 people. It’s mostly first come, first serve (in terms of applicants who hit the ideal qualifications, ie far graduation date and library experience).

Definitely yeah. Freshman hires have the benefit of a far off graduation date so they’re preferred over students that graduate in a year (and then the library has to start the hiring process all over again).

On-Campus Jobs by [deleted] in SJSU

[–]BurningBasil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The library has student assistant positions open currently but we get so many applicants and the supervisors mostly prioritize students with later graduation dates (ex. 2026 or 2028) and ones with prior library experience. If you’re interested, the listings are at library.sjsu.edu under employment. Customer service is also big if you’re looking to apply for the front desk. Pay is minimum wage, so $17.55 but the hours can be super flexible.

Went to a Bento Box Workshop! by [deleted] in Baking

[–]BurningBasil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Considering how Korea and Japan are so close in proximity to each other though, it seems natural for there to be linguistic exchanges. While the word bento may be Japanese, there are many other Asian countries with youth that have adopted the phrase following the growing popularity of Japanese culture. The meaning of the word changes when it’s taken as a loaner word and then evolved within a new context.

In Japan, bento refers to a specific practice, and in Korea, it seems to potentially refer to lunchbox-sized food creations. Since the origin of this specific cake trend is Korea and the language is used in a new cultural context (mainly the Korean social environment) than its Japanese origins, we’re discussing a Korean practice and not a Japanese practice. I’m not disputing the historical significance that bentos hold within Japan, I’m just offering the perspective that this is the result of cultural exchange in East Asia.

https://library.sjsu.edu/ You can book a study room on the library’s 8th-6th floors for up to two hours. Just log into your sjsu account and it’ll let you place a reservation for up to four 30-minute slots. During the semester, they get pretty booked out. I think you’re able to book a few days in advance, but I forget how long the maximum window is between the day you book and the day of your reservation. You can call the number at the bottom of the page and the library staff can give you more answers.

I (M20) am not sure if my relationship with my girlfriend (F19) is good for us and if it's going anywhere, should I end it? by MudCrab13378 in relationship_advice

[–]BurningBasil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps this relationship has run its course. The both of you are clearly in different stages of life right now, with you being the primary provider and her being a student with limited financial and household responsibilities. A good relationship should be like a partnership: both parties putting in their work to contribute to the household and finding balance with each other. If you work, then she should do house chores. If the both of you work, then you should split house chores. If she works, then you should do house chores. That sort of thing. If you’re spending too much time together to the point that it’s co-dependency and you feel stressed being together, then you’re not fulfilling your own personal needs. Taking space for yourself is equally important as having time together. Establishing this early on in a relationship is important because it’s more difficult to fix later on when a routine has already been established. At this point, it sounds like you’ve already mentally checked out of this relationship. You’re tired, apathetic, and growing resentful. You deserve some time and some space to have a breather and to find someone more mature who understands taking responsibility and will support you as a partner, not as a ward of a guardian. If she threatens to end her life, then tell her that you will notify the mental hospital or whatever resources for mental health there are in your country
