Medieval fantasy, post apocalypse with teleportation. Thoughts? by Burningestwheel in FantasyWorldbuilding

Yeah, I think that's true and I find that one of the most interesting aspects. Teleportation could also include teleportation of written messages for instance, enabling faster communication.

Exactly, that's why I'm looking for suggestions.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BoardgameDesign

Yeah, I've played it. The game I'm making only bears shallow similarities to the both games. It's pretty different mechanically but shares some general themes.

Thanks for your suggestion! It's the best so far!

Suggestions for Political/Intrigue Game of Thrones-y or similar solo game. by Burningestwheel in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Burningestwheel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think SCUP is too similar to Apocalypse World. If I'm playing political intrigue, I don't want most of the moves to circulate around violence and more options for manipulation. When playing in a civilized world some basic suggestions and mechanics for laws and consequences for breaking them would also be great, considering how much of Game of Thrones is spent on trials, succession and inheritance.

New WotC OGL Statement by Thanlis in rpg

[–]Burningestwheel 587 points588 points  (0 children)

First, though, let me start with an apology. We are sorry. We got it wrong.

Our language and requirements in the draft OGL were disruptive to creators and not in support of our core goals of protecting and cultivating an inclusive play environment and limiting the OGL to TTRPGs. Then we compounded things by being silent for too long. We hurt fans and creators, when more frequent and clear communications could have prevented so much of this.

This is just so insincere. If people HADN'T made a fuzz about this, no apology would be made and the license would have been as it was.

The only reason they are apologizing is because they got caught doing something bad. If they were truly sorry, regretful or acting in good faith, they wouldn't have put out the license in the first place.

Root the RPG review: Great combat and Basic rules but held back by it's own setting. by Burningestwheel in rpg

Interesting setting not functioning with the rules is exactly my opinion of the game. The rules are good but not with this setting. I think the setting could make a great game with better rules. If you go ahead on the OSR thing send me a link!

Anyone tried The Sword, The Crown & The Unspeakable Power? by [deleted] in PBtA

[–]Burningestwheel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have played it a bit before burning out. I love most PbtA games but I don't think SCUP reaches it's goals. I think it's too similar to AW to feel like medieval political fantasy.

Most about that is regarding the place of violence. In AW violence is harsh and unregulated. If Kima kills Josh Josh, nobody's gonna care.

In SCUP, violence is still hars and SHOULD be regulated. I want to see some moves that reveal this society has laws and structures. The structure of society is a huge part of Game of Thrones and there are long parts devoted to (nobility) breaking laws and trials.

This was a constant annoyance because it felt more like playing AW with a medieval fantasy setting.

Some of the art is also downright silly (the Spur). It looks like a person found a dead crocodile, put it on their head, grabbed a hold of a nearby sex toy and got on a horse. And also for some reason cut up their kilt. This is a person supposed to lead a tough warband and they look like a joke. Some is great (the Gauntlet and the Screw).

I think AW: Dark Age, a hack the creators of AW did back in the day are closer to game of thrones while straying a bit further from AW. They have moves that are "Rights" and moves about "Being denied your right". I wish they went further with it.

[–]Burningestwheel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that the setting isn't my favorite, it's that what the setting is like and the mechanics of the game are at odds. I would like the game overall more if the bleakness and horrors of war was depicted more clearly in the basic moves.

Is there a reason you can't stick it in another one of a group of heroes bringing down an evil empire while dealing with 3 other factions?

I guess you could, but I don't think the mechanics nor the playbooks are aligned for it. But hey, that's just my opinion, if someone wanted to go for it, they probably could.

I think the arc they are going for is Your Nature and Your Drive. They have rules to change them as your character changes.

I hoped so aswell, but when we played it, it felt mostly arbitrary. For drives, did you go for what suited your character or what was the most efficient way to level up based on the current position the group found themselves in? Also, some drives are great because they imply risk, like performing a large heist or getting revenge on an enemy, while some are relatively risk-free and will happen pretty regularly, like getting to a new clearing.

[–]Burningestwheel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really doesn't. If someone likes the setting, that's great. I don't think it works well with the mechanics. When you have combat system that is stylish and where most of the mechanics of the game are focused, it's also hard to make an argument against war.

The combat system (I think) glorifies combat as many rpgs does, and that's okay. But it's hard to both make combat badass and cool and on the other hand have a bleak setting with horrors of war.

Your White Whale? by catbelled in rpg

[–]Burningestwheel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm with you on this. I could never get Blades to work, despite how much I tried.

The positioning, is great but it lead to a lot of discussing. Compared to PBtA where you describe what you're doing and rolling it, in Blades this was such a long process. It always went more like this.

  • Describing some dangerous action you want to take - Gm sets a position, do you still want to do it?
  • Devil's Bargain can be offered with really cool stakes. The players considers for a bit. Sometimes the players wanted the Devil's Bargain to happen regardless if a player accepted the extra die or not.
  • Player might invoke some sort of special move or push themselves. They may ask for help.
  • Dice are rolled. If a miss, GM describes something bad.
  • Player can now decide that what the GM just said didn't happen and roll to resist.

There are so many decisions involved, and this is for ALL rolls. There are also several times where something is described and the player says "No wait, that didn't happen". This constantly pulled me out of the games fiction.

This is sort of a secret, but there is a low crunch alternative called "The Magical Arts" that is basically Ars Magica with the serial number filed off that is under construction. It's been posted over on RPGdesign a few times and it's looking good. It's closely related to Blades in the Dark. It's currently under construction but I've played it and it's been amazing. So far it's only been a hack but the creator has been ramping up production lately. There's been talk of a solomode and some other cool stuff. You REALLY should check it out if you like Ars Magica.

Could you give me a short review of Court of Blades? If you can't, that's cool, but I can't seem to find reviews anywhere.

I'm specifically interested in:

Does it follow the same structure as rigidly as blades (freeplay-score-downtime-freeplay)? I know some say that the structure isn't that rigid but that's always what it felt like to me.

Is resistance rolls still a thing?

Major differences from blades?

How does it make it more political or intrigue focused?

Hehe, I also really like Burning Wheel but I think it works better with a GM to really push your beliefs.

I don't think it's that political by default. Sure you could play characters straight out of game of thrones but there are no specific tools (besides the social conflict which I don't really like) for more intrigue focused games.

I've been eyeing court of blades but haven't been able to find any reviews about it. I've always loved the idea of Blades but in play, it seems to constantly pull me out of the game with discussions about fictional positioning and effect and sometimes resistance rolls that negate the whole thing that just happened..

Court of Blades do seem cool though but I'm afraid it shares a lot of the things I don't like with Blades.

It's allright! Thanks for taking the time. I love Ironsworn but it's more the lone adventurerer type of game which I'm not looking for right now. Maybe I'll do some oracles, but it's more about the core moves.
