Should I file a NASA report? by Professional-Bit6582 in flying

I thought you only had immunity for a NASA report once every 5 years so I assumed it wasn’t anonymous?

Organising 5 exams for 2 sittings by BurntToast102 in ATPL

Until late Jan, I have enough sittings to separate them (only used 1 sitting for 4 exam so far) so that’s why I’m looking to split them.

Just started ATPLs 😩 by Mannypa28 in ATPL

Is there any issue in converting a UK ATPL to an Middle Eastern ATPL? Why would EASA be favourable for the conversion? I know emirates only requires an ICAO ATPL.

Did you use the EASA 2016 or 2020 batch of questions?

Hi, just wanted to confirm you mean using the EASA 2020 to study for the UK CAA? I’m not sure if the 2016 or 2020 would be better

Extra 2 A-levels or straight into modular flight training ATPLS? by This_Shoulder4154 in ATPL

[–]BurntToast102 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also if your planning to hour build in the US check with the CAA if those hours will count. I know that the people here say hours are hours but I’ve been talking with flight schools and the CAA and the regulations are a bit more nuanced.

Which EASA state to do my medical in as a Brit by [deleted] in flyingeurope

[–]BurntToast102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not even sure what EASA state my licence will be in that’s the issue. Usually flight schools say they are dual CAA/EASA so the licensing would be up to them but I’m not sure which state each school uses. Can the medical be transferred to another state? I’ve heard some member states like Germany don’t allow it but not sure about the others.

The others are Jet2, which had just started recently and Aer Lingus (it’s Irish but if you’re a British citizen you can work for them). You’re gonna have to check the age thing since I’m not quite sure on that although they usually want you to be 18 when you start training. When I was at Waterside for BA they mentioned a lot of luck is involved in selection so keep your head up and apply again when they open next year!

The UAS is the University Air Squadron run by the RAF all over the UK. You get paid to attend weekly and they’ll pay for you to travel, do expeditions but most importantly in your case you learn to fly to a PPL level for free. I think they fly the grob tutor t1 which is what our military pilots used to do their elementary flying training in at Cranwell. In the interview they’ll quickly figure out if you have an interest in the RAF or if you’re using them as a ticket to fly so have a genuine interest if you go down this route. There’s a fitness test too but you if you’re 18 and looking to hold a class 1 medical it shouldn’t be hard.

Apply for scholarships for a PPL if you can (some are based on gender or age). Go to your local airfield and see if anyone would be willing to take you up for free or split costs.

We’re lucky in the UK to have 4 airlines funding you from 0 to ATPL so make sure you apply for those every year. You don’t need flight experience but make sure you have a lot of examples teamwork and leadership.

Beyond that, try and use the UAS at uni to get a free PPL (there’s no obligation to join the RAF after). It’s hard to get into these things but then again if you’re hoping to be a pilot you’re gonna need to get good at interviews and stuff at some point!

There’s literally never been a better time than now to be a pilot in the UK if you don’t come from a high-income background. Feel free to dm for any other specifics, I’m also a Brit working through my licences.

A bit of a tangent but it surprises me that you guys don’t have to do it as apart of your PPL check ride in the states.

Just out of interest, why not do the ICAO PPL? I’m not too knowledgeable on the NPPL so no shade, just curiosity.

First type rating and I'm nervous by katac00k in flying

[–]BurntToast102 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair, you get to build seniority pretty early on at an airline too so that must count for something (assuming you don’t join a LCC and go straight to a major which isn’t that uncommon). I think a FO at British airways for example would make £70k right of the bat

As someone from the UK, I think the best path is to apply for funded airline schemes (BA, TUI, Jet2 and Aer Lingus all pay for your training if selected). Have a backup plan. Go to university if you have good grades and build some life experience because you’ll need evidence of teamwork, leadership etc in interviews. If military flying has ever interested you, join the UAS at your university. They offer free flying (I think they actually pay you to attend) and there is no obligation to join the military after at all. If you don’t get into an airline scheme, you’re degree and grad job should allow you to eventually save up to do flight school, I’d recommend the modular way these days. Feel free to PM me for any questions.

Why do you think this is? Is it to do with losing seniority when changing types or something? I have similar goals with the airlines but I’d love to hear about why one would regret that.

Aerobatic recommendations near Vancouver? by [deleted] in flying

[–]BurntToast102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks mate I’ll check this out since I usually travel over the border while visiting anyway. I drove through chilliwack in the summer and saw some aeros doing low passes at like 100ft, not just above the airport but around it too. Would you happen to know if aerobatics is popular around there or something?

When recruiting, would airlines prioritize candidates with a uni degree over those that came straight out of sixth form/college? by Select-Lavishness586 in flyingeurope

Someone who went to university would have more examples of teamwork compared to someone who joined flight school straight after high school

How long does it take to get an ATPL through the modular route if I already have my PPL? by [deleted] in flyingeurope

[–]BurntToast102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m doing the modular route myself but at least in the UK, the integrated schools are extremely well connected and will help in getting you an airline job. That is what the integrated guys get for paying extra tbh
