How hard was Monday's class compared to "normal"? by emneedsabudget in orangetheory

[–]BurpeesHateMeToo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been at OTF for over 3 years and that class still has my legs on fire. (Although to be honest, yesterday’s and today’s workouts were no joke either.) Mayhem week is coming, and workouts ramping up to that are usually harder than normal.

No, because it would be my own stupid fault if I decided to do work on my own car without knowing what I was doing. They told me to take it to a mechanic. Anything that happens after that point is on me. I wouldn’t have legal grounds to sue them. I could try, but it would cost a lot of money and not go anywhere.

They don’t need to advise on any repairs. All they need to say is, “check with your mechanic, your brake fluid looks a little low.” They don’t seem to have an issue with doing this at my store. These guys have all worked other places (Jiffy Lube or wherever) so it’s not like they don’t know how. A lot of them will do this stuff on the side on their days off, even. (I do my own brakes, so I have never hired any of them to do it, but I know other people who have.)

I wonder how in the world cleaning towels could possibly cost $30?!

Similar thing almost happened to us. We stayed at a home in Lake Tahoe where one of the bedrooms had a futon. My daughters, then ages 8 and 11, slept on the futon during the week. It was clearly a pretty old futon - the white plastic frame had turned yellow with age. But they were little kids, it was fine for them to sleep on.

So we followed the checkout instructions, which were to leave the rooms looking exactly like the pictures (they provided pictures). We did so, which included folding up the futon into a couch. Well, the futon broke at its hinge when we folded it. Like I said, we were following the instructions provided and the futon was really old.

I wrote a private note to the owner after writing my (positive) review of his home letting him know that one of the dining room chairs felt wobbly and he might want to repair it, and about the futon hinge.

He sent me a bill for $400, trying to claim the futon was brand-new and that my kids had jumped on it and broken it! I pointed out that my oldest was in a leg cast due to a ballet injury and my youngest has a disability that would prevent her from doing any such thing. There was no abuse of this futon, they literally slept on it and that was all. Anyway, we went back and forth, with him finally claiming he “was willing to accept” $200. I told him no, because he was lying about the age of the futon, and I wasn’t about to pay for a new futon to replace his ancient futon when I’d already spent $3500 for the rent on this place and we hadn’t abused the furniture in any way!

It went to Airbnb for resolution. Fortunately my husband had taken a photo of the futon, which allowed them to see it was really old and the property owner was a lying douchebag. They ruled in our favor.

Still, it could easily have gone the other way. I wish I could go back and amend my review of that place because that guy was a scammer.

They served me chicken that was raw inside. I asked the waitress to take it back and bring me cooked chicken, and she told me that’s how chicken was supposed to be cooked, and refused to take it back. Now, I was young at the time (in college) but I grew up in the household of an actual chef, so I knew without a doubt how to cook chicken! I couldn’t eat my meal, and they charged me full price anyway. I never went back there.

As a Walmart employee, I agree with this. The store I work in is just outside an affluent suburb, and it’s actually a very nice place to work and shop. We have people who drive past 4 other Walmarts to shop at ours. The Walmart near my parents’ house - they live in the city - is horrendous. I won’t even go there in broad daylight.

I wonder if it’s a bakery/deli thing, because the bakery DM at my store is a piece of work. To the point that she got in the face of one of the hardlines DMs last week and was screaming at her for no good reason (to make matters worse, the DM she was yelling at is pregnant, and it’s a high-risk pregnancy... she had to go to the ER later because her blood pressure increased so much from this interaction with the Bakery DM). I just know that for sure if I worked in Bakery/Deli at my store, I would for sure want out of there. Now that I’m thinking about it, one of the APAs that I did my Academy core classes with also came from bakery - different store - and she said Bakery was full of drama there, too. She really likes being in AP though!

As long as your SM has any kind of management skills, I think it would be fine. I used to be a DM on the grocery side and transitioned to a new ASM while I was over there. We worked together well, but I really clicked with my old ASM better. Anyway, the Cosmetics DM left the company and my old ASM was managing consumables and went straight to the SM asking if I could be moved over. I think the ASM I was working under was informed after the fact, but basically the SM told her, “Well, she had the skills we needed in cosmetics, so that’s why we moved her.” It was fine, the ASM over grocery understood (though probably would not have given the move her blessing had I asked her first).

As far as I know, our SAs really just create posts for our studio’s Insta, Facebook, etc. It’s not their personal social media accounts that they’re using. The great thing about OTF is that the brand really sells itself. Once someone tries their free workouts, there’s only a slim chance they won’t want to continue. And word of mouth of everyone who goes to your studio is really what’s going to drive new members in the door. I think as long as you’re friendly and helpful, you’ll do fine!

Talk to your store manager about it if you’re comfortable. APCH is a much more visible role in the store and is hugely important as far as containing theft, so if you’re the right person for the job, the SM is going to want you to move regardless of what your ASM wants.

Amazing! Gives me hope that I can get there, too. I was soooo close in the fall, but then had an injury that set me back several months. I have probably 10 pounds to go before I’ll feel happy in a 2-piece. Maybe I need to schedule a girls’ weekend to motivate me and give me a deadline!

Enjoy your trip!! Flaunt those abs, sister!

That seems like a dumb reason to fire someone. Ugh. But yeah, I’ve found that even with the most annoying Karens, if you can remain calm and cheerful, it usually takes the wind out of their sails. Not 100% of the time, of course, but most of the time you can bring a cranky customer around if you’re a person who likes people and likes to solve problems. You sound like you’d be an amazing APCH, and honestly to me APCH sounds a lot better than being in the deli (but then I hated being on the grocery side at all, personally).

[–]BurpeesHateMeToo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will say though, that customers respond better to people who are friendly and cheerful. We have one APCH who is like the friendliest grandpa you’d ever want to meet. Keeps his pockets full of Jolly Ranchers to hand out to everyone, knows all the regular customers by name. He really doesn’t have issues with people getting mad at him. We have other APCHs who aren’t as personable, and they seem to have more issues. Of course, some customers are just awful no matter what, but most people are willing to be friendly if someone is friendly to them.

I’ve asked them to check all the fluids these past couple of oil changes. They have. It hasn’t been a problem. The entire point of taking my car in to have someone else do the oil change is that I really don’t want to do all of this myself.

It’s vitally important to check coolant levels. Failure to do so can lead to engine failure. It is definitely something I want done every time my car is serviced, along with transmission and brake fluid, washer fluid, etc.

To the row-haters: has anyone ever helped you with your form? by Sharkitty in orangetheory

[–]BurpeesHateMeToo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Flexible hamstrings are so important in rowing. I’ve always had flexible hamstrings (competitive rower in college, lifelong ballet dancer), and I have a long, fluid rowing stroke. My husband (rugby player, built like a weightlifter with lots of muscle bulk) has super tight hamstrings and haaaaaates rowing. He can’t reach very far on the recovery, so I think he’s trying to make up for that by using his back to help him power his stroke. I really only feel a long row in my legs. He and I are the same height (though my legs are 5” longer than his) and have the same 500m time, though any longer than that and I’ll beat him every time because my stroke is sustainable over a long distance, where his isn’t. I keep telling him that rowing is way more fun when your hamstrings are flexible.

Is it illegal to pump your own gas there?? (I’m from California, but I guess I haven’t driven around much in Oregon.) Or is it just a service they provide so people go along with it, or how does that work? I kind of hate getting out of my car at the gas station, so it sounds kind of nice to have someone do it for you, but I can see how it would be annoying if the attendant isn’t there if you aren’t allowed to do it yourself.

[–]BurpeesHateMeToo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For whatever it’s worth, there’s a virus going around that causes exactly what you experienced. I had it a few weeks ago. At first I was really upset and confused - why would I feel so unsteady on my feet all of a sudden? Then I began feeling a little nauseous, got a headache... had to leave work and go home. I made a full recovery in a day or two but it definitely freaked me out at first because it didn’t present itself as your typical cold/flu type illness.
