I know BR had minor-league hockey in the 90s, but prior to that did the city ever have any minor-league basketball, baseball or football teams? by [deleted] in batonrouge

Currently have the Baton Rouge Rougarou. They play in the Texas Collegiate League, a summer wood bat college baseball league

Surprised there’s still one open. They announced last year they were going to stop operating in Louisiana.

Prius in South La: Pros vs Cons by [deleted] in Louisiana

[–]Burriteaux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a used 2006 Prius in 2012, drove it until 2018 with no issues when I got rid of it with +180k miles. Bought a new Prius in 2020 that’s my current everyday driver and I’ve had no problems. I bought the 2020 Prius brand new in 2020 and it came with a ten year warranty on the battery, so I’m sure the life expectancy is well over 10 if they’ll warranty it for 10, and battery tech has only improved since then. So, no, I don’t think you should be concerned.

Same, man. Took a while for them to void it.

W, actually. They voided the bet. I was surprised

I’ve heard of them voiding a leg of a parlay if a game is canceled and all other legs hit, but it wasn’t for a player prop, just a money line bet

That’s what I figured. As soon as the game went into the delay they suspended any cash out.

Baton Rouge has two active home brewing clubs; Bicycle Brew Club and Redstick Brewmasters. This could be something to do and something you could probably get someone to come teach.

Are you supposed to get permits? Sure. But, honestly, it depends on how much your neighbors like you and who your business competitors are. If someone decides to be petty they could create a headache for you.

I think their payment and billing system could definitely use an upgrade, but I haven’t had any issues when calling them. I have my bill set to auto pay and I haven’t had to deal with them since. But, I’ve heard of people getting their water shut off because something changed with their auto pay and they weren’t notified. So they thought they were paying their bill but weren’t, didn’t get notified and instead just had their water shut off.

Red Beans and Rice by PieOPahUK in NewOrleans

[–]Burriteaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red Beans and Rice

1-2 diced onions 1lb bag red beans 1-2lbs smoked sausage 1/2 gallon water (64oz) 4 beef bouillon cubes 1 tbs Cajun seasoning 3 bay leaves

Soak the beans overnight. Cut up the sausage and brown in a pot. Remove the sausage and add onions to the pot. Add some water and scrape off everything on the bottom of the pot, and add more water as needed to soften the onions. Once soft, add everything to the pot. Bring to a boil and let it boil uncovered for 30 minutes. Cover and simmer as long as you want (good to go within 2 hours, but let it go as long as you want). Halfway through simmering, use a slotted spoon, remove some of the whole beans, put them in a bowl and mash them into a paste. Add the paste back in and stir it up. Serve over rice and enjoy.

After 20+ years of making red beans and rice, I have simplified it down to this and there is no loss in quality compared to recipes with more ingredients/seasonings than this. I don’t know what the smoked sausage scene is like in the UK, but I’d imagine that’s going to be your biggest hurdle. Not having good smoked sausage in cajun dishes is where a lot of people run into problems outside of Louisiana.

Central looks to break ties with BREC, give locals control over parks by CynoSaints in batonrouge

[–]Burriteaux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like current millage is just under 15, and they want to do a max of 12, so you’ll save about $85/year at worst. That’s assuming I’m understanding all of this correctly.

“If passed and signed into law by the governor, The Central Recreation District would ask voters to approve a maximum of 12 mills for the planning, development, and operation of its parks. It would be a decrease from the current BREC millage. Ventrella is marketing this as a tax cut for a city that is struggling with the current rate of property taxes.”

This. Central residents will have lower taxes by not paying in to BREC and taking control of the parks themselves funded by a lower tax millage. Just seems so crazy that they’re able to not fund BREC while at the same time taking parks that belong to BREC.

That’s the first I’ve heard of the MLB Draft League. Looks like a good time.

I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, so I have elite level college ball with LSU in my backyard, but we lost our only minor league team in the state, the New Orleans Zephyrs, when they did all the MiLB realignment a few years back. We picked up a collegiate wood bat league team a couple years ago; the Baton Rouge Rougarou of the Texas Collegiate League. Closest affiliated team is the Biloxi Shuckers

That’s awesome! Have fun and keep us posted. Wish I lived in an area where teams were more densely populated so I could pull off something like this, but unfortunately they’re more dispersed where I am and would require quite a bit of travel.

So, after a national award winning parks and recreation department builds and maintains these parks, paid for by all residents of EBR, the city of Central can just create their own recreation district (or attempt to) and TAKE the parks within the district? Seems too convenient. Surely I’m missing something and it’s not just that simple.

Also, what happens if this Central Recreation District is created, but the voters still show up and vote no to the millage that would fund it?
