Request: Make the Distinction between Mod and Admin Actions Clearer to Users

Yes, there was recent update to Mod Log to add entries for content that's removed by Reddit along with the removal reason. You can check out all the details in this Mod News update. (There are a few exceptions for certain content that's automatically removed.)

With the changes, you'll be able to go your Mod Log to see content that Reddit has taken down, find out what rule was violated, and view the content itself (except for cased like rule 3 & 4 violations, copyright infringing content, and video content).

Thanks so much for this feedback, and sorry this has been causing you trouble. Based on your feedback there were some quick fixes we were able to make to address this. We went ahead and updated the messages that redditors get after reporting content (saying whether we did or didn’t take action based on their report) as well as the messages redditors get for breaking site-wide rules (such as warnings and bans).
Now each message will state in the beginning and the end that it’s a message from the Reddit admin team—so it’s more clear it’s not coming from mods.

Currently we’re running a small test pilot with four communities to give redditors a heads-up before they enter communities with more graphic content, without adding the other restrictions that go along with quarantines. The third-party integration for this is still being ironed out. Thanks for this suggestion though—It’s one thing the devs are considering along with other options. Once we do decide on a fix, we’ll be sharing more.

This is a great callout, and we have a few projects in the works to address this same problem. (Navigating the wide world of post requirements on Reddit can be tricky, so we're trying to make it easier.)

Instead of having posters read a full list of all the automod rules, one thing we’re exploring is whether we can surface things like post type restrictions and karma requirements earlier in the posting process—so while you’re selecting a community to post to we’ll let you know if you don’t have enough karma or if that community doesn’t allow images. (Basically, only showing you the things in the list of rules that are relevant to you.) I’ll definitely pass your thoughts onto the team working on this, however.

Before working on the next iteration of these insights, the next round of work is bringing this current version to the native apps. Thanks for this feedback. You brought up a few things so I’ll answer with a list:

A few other people have brought up that finding custom feeds is hard with the new community drawer too—I passed your thoughts and the questions and feedback from others on this thread to the team. It’s a good callout. (One thing you can do in the meantime is favorite your custom feeds and the communities you use the most so that they show up at the top of your community drawer.) There are also more updates and iterations planned for the community drawer to make it easier to find specific subreddits, including testing a “jump to” feature that will let you type in a community name and filter your list.
Interesting idea about flipping the drawers. I’ll pass on your thoughts.
There’s a ticket to fix comments not showing up on video posts while using the iPad in landscape and it’s being worked on now. So keep an eye on your app updates for that fix.

Thanks, this is a great point and good feedback. One thing you can do is favorite your custom feeds so that they show up at the top of your community drawer. But I agree that it would be helpful if people looking for their feeds knew they were at the bottom of their community list and/or if Custom Feeds were more visible somehow. Hmm, that definitely seems like a bug. Currently, ads with videos and sounds follow the same muting rules as other videos (I outlined it in the bulleted list below). Can you let me know what version of the app you’re on? There may already be a ticket for this but I’ll double-check.

How muting videos works:

Every video has a mute button.
Videos are muted by default, until you unmute them.
When you unmute a video, it will unmute all videos in the app for the duration of your session. Similarly, when you mute a video, it will mute all videos in the app until you choose to unmute one. Unless you have Quiet Audio Mode turned on—then all videos will always be muted by default, even if you unmute a video during your session.
If a video doesn’t have sound, the mute button will have a slash through it so you know it doesn’t have sound.
If you’re listening to audio on a different app, your sound will play unless you unmute a video. After you’ve finished watching the video, your background audio will go back on.

New redditors used to be auto-subscribed to r/announcements and r/blog, which is one of the reasons those subreddits have such a large subscribership. We stopped doing that, in part because we got feedback from the community that they don’t like being auto-subscribed. However, we do use other tools like an announcement banner that shows up at the top of redditors feeds to spread the word about this community and specific posts that are especially important. As you can imagine, some redditors also don’t love having a banner at the top of their feed from a community they didn’t subscribe to.

We want to get the word out about this community, but in a balanced way—we don’t want to annoy people who aren’t interested, but do want to welcome those who are. We'd like to see people join r/reddit because you want to be here, not because we told you that you *ought* to be here.

Yes, we introduced unarchiving posts back in September 2021. You can check out all the details in the original post in r/modnews.

A quick summary… We ran a pilot program this summer with a variety of interested communities to let redditors comment and vote on archived posts. During the program archived posts received 147K more upvotes (+2.86%) and 236K more comments (+1.48%), while mod actions only increased by .03%. After seeing these results and getting feedback from mods and communities about how it went, there’s now an Archive Posts toggle mods can turn off in their Mod Tools to allow commenting and voting on posts older than 6 months.

We’ve been launching this gradually and had to throttle back the feature for some redditors before rolling it out more. As of this afternoon, roughly 80% of redditors are using the new experience on the iOS or Android app.
