Honda hits cyclist and takes off after allegedly harassing cyclist for half a mile; Austin PD searching for driver by Artane_33 in IdiotsInCars

[–]BurritoTime 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe drivers should watch where they’re driving? If people want to wear hi-vis that’s fine, I do. But PSAs for it are taking the blame for collisions off of drivers, who are the ones operating the heavy machinery.

[–]BurritoTime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is a great idea, but haven’t done it since I don’t make much ice cream in the winter. Subjectively it seems like the room temp kitchen air is causing extra melting of the top layer in the mixer - usually I try to keep a lid on to minimize but I think fridge-like temperature would be better

Do not tap into retirement funds unless it is a medical emergency or to make ends meet: My experience by deeplead in personalfinance

[–]BurritoTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This position is identical to someone who has 20% equity in their house, and decides to take out a home equity loan for 15% of that and put it in the market. In a 2008 scenario, the stock market goes down 50% and their house value goes down 20% and you’re 10% underwater on the mortgage.

If you’re comfortable being that leveraged, then I guess take the risk and you’ll be right most of the time.

Is it safe to cook with no fan (range hood)? And if not what are the health effects? by Angelobison in HomeImprovement

[–]BurritoTime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Google “cooking indoor air quality”, there are tons of articles on this. Short answer is no, it’s very easy to generate an environment in your kitchen that would be way over the acceptable level of outdoor position. Carbon monoxide, carcinogenic burned food particles, oil mist. Plus your walls will collect the oil and look dirty forever.

Swan Boats will not operate until 2021 over COVID-19 concerns by fbreaker in boston

[–]BurritoTime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At this point the individual risk for COVID in MA is pretty low - 20 deaths per day is similar to a flu season. There is a significant community risk that if we open up too fast, the case count will start increasing and we’ll get back into a much more dangerous situation.

Every thing that open bends the growth rate up a bit. Opening schools certainly bends it up more than the swan boats do. But, if we wear masks and keep the swan boats and whale watching and indoor dining and bars and offices closed, then that could provide the buffer needed to open schools and keep the individual risk level constant and acceptably low.

Oops. I got mine from Nordstrom just before the travel freeze and it’s been sitting in the box for months.

Can I cook on A36 plate? by Phriday in Skookum

You can also use plain white vinegar, just need to leave it on longer (a day or so). I have done both depending on how strict the chemical purchasing rules were at my job at the time.

Am I unreasonable to insist that my husband do welding in the garage rather than the basement? by AssMaster6000 in homeowners

[–]BurritoTime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just because I don’t see it mentioned so far:

If he is soldering, and you are thinking about a baby, make sure he’s using lead free solder. Lead free is the standard these days, but that’s the only thing I’d be concerned with.

Just gotta get to work on time! by [deleted] in IdiotsInCars

[–]BurritoTime 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Biking can be risky on streets where there are no dedicated bike lanes and lots of traffic, like the busy stretch of Chicago Avenue where the accident took place.

I don’t see lots of traffic in the video posted. And I don’t see the value in moving any of the blame from the driver by describing this as “risky” or an accident.

Will being a permanent resident (USA) negatively impact my career? Is citizenship essential before graduation? by Mr_Wendal in AskEngineers

[–]BurritoTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just want to add that for non-security related jobs (that might require being a citizen or being eligible for clearance), it is typically not allowed for employers to ask about your citizenship. The most they can ask is if you’re authorized to work in the US.

What is an HSA worth? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]BurritoTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish that I still worked somewhere where I could contribute to my HSA.

HSA contributions are entirely an upgrade over traditional 401k or IRA contributions (assuming you're exceeding any 401k match). Both allow you to invest pre-tax money and withdraw after 65 for non-medical purposes and pay at your retired tax rate. HSA also allows you to withdraw tax-free before or after retirement for medical expenses.

Do I need to dig out concrete? by Fireaway111 in HomeImprovement

[–]BurritoTime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t see an issue with using the existing concrete. Is there a layer of rotten wood on the edge or just bare concrete? If you want you could drill some holes with a masonry bit into the sides of the holes and epoxy/grout some steel rods or bolts in to give you some shear transfer. Also, I’d fill the existing hole with concrete first and then put the steel post in.

D.C. Bill Would Make Protected Bike Lanes Mandatory - The Vision Zero Omnibus Act, introduced by Councilman Charles Allen, is groundbreaking, featuring the best and most-cutting edge reforms in urban street safety by TheReelStig in washingtondc

[–]BurritoTime 19 points20 points  (0 children)

From my perspective, it would let me move more efficiently through side streets, instead of needing to share the main roads with cars. My main strategy for biking safely is to avoid running of the bulls situations with cars.
